How did my mom get the truth? To the best of my recollection, this is what happened:

In the Fall of 1948 my mother had a 19-month old and a newborn baby. My aunt was over helping her one morning, when they saw the witnesses approach the house. Apparently my dad had been taking the magazines for a while, but my mom wasn’t really interested, so she sent my aunt to the door, saying “tell them I’m not home!” My aunt did as requested, but at some point my mother blurted out “and I don’t have any money anyway!”

Of course, now she had to go to the door. The sister asked her if she enjoyed reading the magazines. Not wanting to be rude, mom accepted the magazines, and somehow agreed to a bible study that morning. Arrangements were made for the sister and her husband to come back one evening the following week when my dad would be home. All week my mom thought “I hope they don’t come. I hope they don’t come”. Her neighbour said, “if they said they’re coming, they are coming, just you see!” Well, finally is was that evening. It was raining, so my mom still hoped they wouldn’t come. The arranged time came and went. Seven o’clock, no witnesses. Eight o’clock, still nobody. Finally, after 9 p.m., a knock on the door. Here was the sister, who had come by bicycle, in the rain (this was in the Netherlands, and at that time hardly anybody had a car, and even fewer had telephones in the home. As a matter of fact, we didn’t get a phone until 1972, when my dad got sick). The sister apologized for being so late, but she had just come from visiting her husband at the hospital. New arrangements were made, and a study was started.

Sometime after, my mother visited her parents and told them about her studies. Her dad responded with “what is this now? First you’re a socialist, then communist, and now you’re studying with the Witnesses?” Well, a few months later her study conductor told her about a study in a neighbouring congregation who was already going into the preaching work. It was my grandfather! He had decided to check out what his daughter and son in law were so interested in.

So that is how my mom, and eventually most of her family, learned about Jehovah.
