  6. But He’s Not One of Us! By Keith McClellan | Blanco County News My church recently conducted an open house to celebrate the completion of a beautiful new meetinghouse. I invited friends and neighbors to tour the building, enjoy the artwork that adorns the hallways and classrooms, and to learn a little about what makes us tick. Although the event was well attended, very few of my invitees showed up. When I read in the paper that the Jehovah’s Witnesses were holding an open house to introduce to the locals their new Kingdom Hall, I decided I would go, especially since I had never before been in one of their buildings. I thought that by attending the event I might find out more about what makes them tick. As impressed as I was with the modest but well appointed facility, I was even more impressed with the friendly people I met. Except for asking my name, no one attempted to extract from me my religious preference, my address, my phone number or in any way tried to force his or her beliefs on me—with one possible exception. A friendly, confident young lady of perhaps eleven or twelve handed me an invitation to attend an upcoming lecture. I found out that the building went up over a period of two short months almost entirely with volunteer labor and expertise. Members of their church came from far and wide to help erect the building—and I must say, they did a fine job. Have you ever had neighbors, colleagues at work, members of your civic group or other acquaintances whom you could have called your good friends except that they were Catholic, or Jewish, or black or had some handicapping condition or, heaven forbid, were Texas Aggies? Suppose you are introduced to someone who is polite and well-spoken. He seems trustworthy, loyal, helpful, kind and competent. Then you find out that he is in the country without papers or that he is from the Middle East and, bam! His good qualities get overridden because of one piece of information. I am reminded of Janice Komp. She was a classmate of mine I during our high school years. She came from a good family, was attractive, had a great personality, participated in sports and had a good singing voice. But neither I nor any of my friends ever dated her. Why? Simply because she was taller than any boy in school. Jerry Earl Johnston, in a recent Deseret News article said, “We are all a complicated blend of positive and negative qualities. And putting too much emphasis on just one aspect of a person’s personality at the expense of all others not only distorts the truth, but shows us to be biased and judgmental.” (April 2, 2011) When I was just a youngster, a woman came to church each Sunday with several toddlers and a baby in tow. She gave them crackers and Cheerios to eat and toys to distract them and to keep them quiet during the main service. Of course, when the meeting was over, the evidence of their having been present was obvious from the crumbs and spills on the pew and on the floor where they had been sitting. I remember hearing some adults criticize her for the mess they made and for the movement of the little bodies and the noise. Then one woman put the criticism to rest by stating simply, “Perhaps she could use a little help.” As Henri Nouwen said, “Perhaps we spend far too much time deciding what we think about other people and not enough time looking for ways to help them.” If they are “not one of us” then there must be something wrong with them. A few years ago North Koreans were experiencing difficult times and many were literally starving. My church provided millions of dollars worth of aid in the form of food, clothing, hygiene kits, clean water and etc. There was some criticism because the North Koreans are not considered to be our friends. Church President Thomas S. Monson focuses on serving and caring for the lonely and downhearted and befriending those who seem to have few, if any, friends. “I believe,” he says, “that when we face our Maker, we will not be asked, ‘How many positions did you hold?’ but rather, ‘How many people did you help?’” Article Source: Blanco County News

  9. Two Christian women were attacked by an angry Hindu mob in India after comforting a grieving neighbor who had lost her husband. One of the women was beaten, and both were detained by police. The incident began when the two women, who are Jehovah's Witnesses were invited to the home of their neighbor in the city of Davangere, located in central India, on the morning of December 20, 2010. According to a press release the women had known the neighbor for several years and were stopping by to share a positive message from the Bible after learning that her husband had recently died. After the neighbor had expressed gratitude for the visit the women left. After leaving, the witnesses were confronted by a man who falsely accused the women of converting people to Christianity and threatened to make trouble for them. Only minutes after returning to the home of one of the women a mob encircled her home led by the man who had originally threatened them. The mob forced their way into the home shouting obscenities at the women, calling one of them a prostitute and began to destroy their religious literature. Female members of the mob were called in to beat the two women. They complied by beating one of the women and preventing the other from escaping. Local police arrived at the home but did not attempt to disperse the mob. Instead they took the two women into custody and took them to the station for questioning. The women were forced to sign documents which they were not permitted to read and were charged with blasphemy. One of the victims said, “During the entire incident the police made no effort to disperse the mob and restore public order. Our complaint was neither registered as a First Information Report nor recorded in the police diary; instead a Report was made using false information about what we said and did. Even when we were at the police station, the mob gathered and began to assault our friend who came to assist us.” Hindu attacks against Christians in India seem sporadic but actually occur on a daily basis and go unreported due to fear of reprisals. According to Catholic Culture about a half dozen attacks were reported in December as some Christian denominations readied themselves for Christmas celebrations. Central India is home to some of the poorest people in the country. Only about 2 percent of the population of India identifies themselves as Christian but about 25 percent of Central Indians identify themselves as such. These attacks are both religiously and politically motivated says a UN Refugee Agency report that dates back to 1999. The report, entitled Politics by Other Means: Attacks Against Christians in India says "the communities affected represent some of the poorest in the country and include Dalits and members of local tribal communities, many of whom convert to Christianity to escape abuses under India’s caste system. In many cases, Christian institutions and individuals targeted were singled out for their role in promoting health, literacy, and economic independence among Dalit and tribal community members. A vested interest in keeping these communities in a state of economic dependency is a motivating factor in anti-Christian violence and propaganda." http://www.digitaljournal.com

  12. quote she has such strange reasoning....how she came to that conclusion...after acknowledging the stance Jehovah's Witnesses take .... well from what i see in the link you have posted some of the people that made a reply to her view on the witnesses so seem to be exjw and anti-witnesses so i do advise you sis to please be careful.
  13. Interesting that she acknowledges the persecution of our brothers and sisters during world war 2 and willingness to endure to the end and... Band together what exactly does that mean? that we go into the world follow man and joins hands and sing kumbaya my lord.....or take up weapons killing our brothers? True Christians do not take up weapons to kill their Christian brothers or anyone else. The Bible states: “The children of God and the children of the Devil are evident by this fact: Everyone who does not carry on righteousness does not originate with God, neither does he who does not love his brother. . . . We should have love for one another; not like Cain, who originated with the wicked one and slaughtered his brother.”—1 John 3:10-12; 4:20, 21(( Jesus said that the true religion would be evident in the lives of the people who practice it. “By their fruits you will recognize them,” he said. “Every good tree produces fine fruit.” (Matthew 7:16, 17) In other words, those who practice the true religion would be recognized by their beliefs and their conduct. )) but remember It is Jehovah your God you must worship, and it is to him alone you must render sacred service.” (Matthew 4:10)
