Electronic devices (especially tablets) at public conventions

Dear friends,

 

this is my first post here, so let me start with warmest greetings from germany (bavaria)!

Me and my family are looking forward to seeing our brothers and sisters at the convention in Detroit in June. We can hardly await it.

 

I have a question: Do you plan to use your tablets at the convention? If so, what do you do with them at the intermissions? Do you take them with you or do you leave them at your seats?

I have no experience with handling that at our (former) circuit conventions either. At the regional conventions, i dare to leave it in my bag (since these conventions are a bit more "intimate" with lesser guests).

 

I don't think there will be safes to lock them away, are there?

I will be keeping mine with me at all times, Peer. As these are public events, they tend to attract thieves and pickpockets so it is not safe to assume that all people there are brothers. There are brothers assigned to security on the watch for these things, but the wise move is to protect your own belongings.

Hi Chris, 

i am from Weiden, a 44000 people town in Oberpfalz. Maybe you know "Seltmann Weiden" or "Bauscher Weiden". Both make high-quality porcelain-dishes.

Munich is about 220 kilometers away, 2 hours driving.

 

Concerning the tablets: that's what I assumed. Unfortunately most tablets are not to be carried too comfortably. On the other side, better than using a new (english) bible and song book just for the time of our visit.

I've always used my iPad at conventions and assemblies. At one time I had a 10'' iPad. I had a small shoulder bag. It was big enough to hold my Bible and my iPad. So generally during lunches I just carried it with me with the bag part on my back. I have an iPad Mini now and I just carry it in my jacket pocket or pants pocket. I definitely wouldn't leave it at my seat unless someone you trust isn't going to move.

I'll ask my wife, maybe she has got something useful to carry my iPad.

I'll bring my Galaxy note and use it for notes with he PDF version of one of the "convention notebooks" we have. But I will be carrying it with me.

We will be attending our convention which is an outdoor stadium, Almost all seats are in direct sunlight which makes tablets very hard to see. So I will be bringing hard copies of my Bible, songbook and WT along with my tablet just in case.

I use an iPad, have a Pacsafe Metrosafe 200 shoulder bag that it fits in perfectly, so carry it around with me during the Convention, really handy bag.

That's my wife purse... Lol

She always carry my stuff... wallet, tablet, car keys... everything

She does that because I'm a very distracted guy and if not for her I would have lost all of the above several times ;)

I will be taking my ipad but I have an ipad carry satchel with shoulder strap and will not be leaving it at my seat because not everyone at our conventions are brothers and sisters.  Since I will be attending the AT&T  Center in Arlington, Texas (Cowboy Stadium)  it will be easy to see/use.   It is exciting times as our International Convention is the last of June.     Next Month!!!!!     Just the shot in the heart we all need to continue determined, steadfast, and energized to carry out the work at hand...come what may!!!

I carry my iPad 2 in a cross shoulder bag when not in use. I will also be recording the Convention.

I had the same concern, but now that I have a smartphone (my first!), I will use it for the bible, songbook, and WT. It is of course smaller than the tablet I usually use for meetings, but it will work for the convention and I'll be able to just plop it into my purse. Now my husband's tablet ... is his tablet ;) What I mean is that he will carry it with him (or not), but it won't fit in my purse. We do have a small bag that he can use, and I think it has a shoulder strap.

 

Hmm, thinking out loud, he's on parking so probably won't be able to carry it when he's "on duty". Guess I'm carrying it after all.

Hi Peer,

Welcome! I take mine everywhere I go. My hubby has a man bag for his. Funny thing about these tablets, the more you use them the more you find use for them.

Edit: I did draw the line at the doctors office. I refused to be weighed while holding it.

I take my tablet. If I'm sitting with a group of people I know, and if at least one person remains behind, I'll leave it at my seat (out of sight) during breaks.

 

Having done security (as a worldly job) I would advise you against leaving it completely unattended. As others have pointed out, these are public events. If a Brother or Sister observed a person, dressed in worldly clothes, rummaging through bags they would alert an Attendant. But, thieves are much cleverer than that. They would dress to fit in with everyone else. Unless you specifically knew the owner of a bag I doubt you would think to question a man, dressed in a suit and tie, looking through it. These types of criminals know to look the part and act confident.

 

Sit with a group of people you know and take it in turns to watch your gear. Or, take your valuables with you.
