Cryptowall, the successor to cryptolocker

Recommended Posts

I have had three clients so far this week that have had this infection. I was able to kill the virus, but only after the damage was done. All of their Documents, pictures, videos, ALL of their personal data files are now encrypted. They now have to decide whether or not to pay the "ransom" to get the key to break the encryption. One of them, a loan office, has no choice unless his backup drive was not affected since, hopefully, it was unplugged when the virus hit.  We'll know tomorrow.

Here is the post I made concerning "Cryptolocker" when it was dangerous. The recommendations there are the same for this variant.

A fix was found for files that were locked by this virus, but there is as yet, no known solution for Cryptowall. you can read about it here and also learn what precautions to take. Mainly BACK UP YOUR FILES to a hard drive or network drive that is not connected to your system.

Stay safe!
