Dieting, going Low Carb

Recommended Posts

Truly speaking, I try this for few days and I am easily hungry and It really affects my mood, I become easily irritated...

The website said I have to add a lot of fat if I don't want to get hungry...  :crying:

But, I am afraid my cholesterol will rise... Oh! So confused!

Do you all cholesterol is okay with low carb diet?

I don't like diets..  they never work long term.

Balanced eating is the best .. cut down sugar , watch your portions .. a little bit of exercise, plenty of water and you will be ok !

I used to drink a lot of water, veggies, low fat, high protein... but few exercises and a lot of carbs...

I really like noodle and rice! And, I feel I am getting fatter, so thinking to change my eating habit... But, I am worried about high fat,..

Many who overeat prefer carbohydrates to other snack foods not only because they crave sweets but also because they like bread and pasta. Smokers who quit smoking crave carbohydrates, and a reason they gain weight when they quit is that they eat more sweet, carbohydrate-rich foods.

That's me,I felt sleepy and exhausted in the afternoon usually...

Today, I try to avoid carbs... I admit I cheat a little potato chips and few spoon of rices as I was really hungry... But, what made me feel good is my tummy was not bloating and I was not drowsy... I felt good except that hungry feeling which affect me irritated easily...

Ivy there are good fats you can eat that won't raise your cholesterol like Avacados, coconut and nuts .... I enjoy eggs ( limit my intake) .....chicken ( no skin) and fish are a good source of lean protein. Study's now show that it is more probable that inflammation in the body causes heart disease and cancer...... Not that you want to eat a lot of bad fats. ( be balanced)

I know rice is a staple for you more so than our culture so it's hard to escape. Try eating an apple around 1PM it helps keep your blood sugar stable and you won't slump into that sleepy mode. I learned that trick from my Chinese acupuncturist it really helps.

I suspect your not fat anyway ivy ....

Dilip if you PM me your email address I will give you some healthy smoothly ideas. ( I have one for breakfast every day)

Hi Ivy i would personally limit my egg intake ....egg whites is a great way to increase your protein here we can buy egg whites in a little carton just add to the egg and not have to waste the yolk. I like an egg with spinach in the AM .........Or other types of stir fried veggies. Holds me until lunch or I have a protein smoothie . Fast and easy.

Regarding cholesterol, I would suggest reading (or listening to-if you do the Audible thing like I do), Nina Teicholz book, "The Big Fat Surprise".  It's an real eye-opener.

Or perhaps Gary Taubes book, "Why We Get Fat and What To Do About it."

Or Michel de Lorgeril's ebook, "Cholesterol and Statins: Sham Science and Bad Medicine."  (for this one, just put the Kindle app (free) on your smart phone or tablet and then buy the ebook off Amazon ($19.00)

Or you might want to watch the Time Magazine video here:

http://time.com/2863227/ending-the-war-on-fat/

I would suggest that today's genetically modified bread, sugar, vegetable oils, margarine, most packaged foods, and things high on the glycemic index (even corn!) are the real villains, the real killers.  Check around in your congregation to see how many people have diabetes.  I think you'll be surprised.  But few know what is really to blame.

The egg is virtually the perfect food.   Eat as many as you like.

But don't take my word for it.  Read Teicholz book, "The Big Fat Surprise" if you possibly can.  That info may very well save your life (at least for a while) and the lives of those we prepare food for.

PS: Audible (www.audible.com) has a 30 day free trial thing where you can download one audio book for free.  But I think they do rely on the fact that you'll get hooked ($16.18/mo), so be sure and cancel if you don't want to continue.  But it is a way to listen to Teicholz book for free.

Lloyd I agree with you. The big Pharma has had a hand in food production for many reasons, they have altered the main food supply available to most in the world. A sis here went to Portugal for 6 months, she said she could eat almost everything and had no problems. The people grew their food and ate what was from the farm. As soon as she came back she was getting a gut ache from lots of foods, especially the ones you mentioned.

A big culprit, we must all agree, is the overconsumption of sugar. It's like a pervasive weed in everything we eat, even vitamins and toothpaste.

Added to that is the way commercialism has manipulated people into believing they need to eat, boxed this or the 'super fast' that. In the 1950's the TV dinner came out in mass production and the population hasn't looked back.

Another one I've been keeping an eye on is liquid oils. Avocado and olive oil  are natural liquid oils. But the studies on others, at least as far as today, are scary.  http://www.realfoodwholehealth.com/2011/01/why-vegetable-oils-are-dangerous-to-your-health/.  And even though some balk or look horrified at lard or bacon grease they are actually better for you. People didn't have issues until all the processed oils were introduced.

I'm not a flag waving nature nut, but I do believe in education about what we eat. I'm firmly convinced we have only relative control over our food. It may be labeled 'Organic" but the growing process is still in a polluted environment and who's to say the seed they use isn't secreted in GMO? We literally are held captive by this system, we can modify what we do, work at doing our personal best but we still are in satan's system.

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/04/110410130831.htm

Some organic foods shown to be surrounded by a "health halo" that is not based on science. Psychologists have long recognized that how we perceive a particular trait of a person can be influenced by how we perceive other traits of the same individual. An example of this would be judging an attractive person as intelligent, just because he or she is good-looking. A growing literature base suggests that the halo effect may also apply to foods, and ultimately influence what and how much we eat.

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/04/130401121506.htm

In a new study, researchers show that an organic label can influence much more than health views: perceptions of taste, calories and value can be significantly altered when a food is labeled "organic". Certain people also appear to be more susceptible to this 'health halo' effect than others.

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/08/140827111944.htm

A growing number of consumers are willing to pay a premium for fruits, vegetables and other foods labelled 'organic,' but whether they're getting what the label claims is another matter. Now scientists studying conventional and organic tomatoes are devising a new way to make sure farms are labeling their produce appropriately.

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/06/140613130717.htm

Health-related buzzwords, such as 'antioxidant,' 'gluten-free' and 'whole grain,' lull consumers into thinking packaged food products labeled with those words are healthier than they actually are, according to a new research study. That "false sense of health," as well as a failure to understand the information presented in nutrition facts panels on packaged food, may be contributing to the obesity epidemic in the United States, researchers say.

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/09/100907071239.htm

Food manufacturers advertise a variety of foods on grocery store shelves by using nutrient claims on the front of packaging. New research evaluates how consumers are interpreting certain carbohydrate-related content claims and the effects of claims on consumer perceptions of food products. Findings from the study reveal that consumers misinterpret low carbohydrate claims to have health benefits and weight loss qualities beyond their nutrition facts.

Some interesting reads.

Ahhh, ok.

As I get older I'm not able to handle being too hungry. I will literally throw up, have done so as I try to leave for work if I don't eat something, anything.

Been looking at some of the paleo things on Pinterest, but not too seriously. Probably now should.

I have few questions...

I felt so hot and sweat a lot... Is it normal?

And, can I use honey mask? I know this is silly, but I don't want this honey mask ruin my effort of consuming low carbs... I mean I don't eat the honey, but I put it on my face, somehow it's absorbed into my skin, which is part of my body... So, is it okay? Somehow I feel this question is silly but important to me.. Please don't laugh!

I doubt that the mask would be a problem, but who knows?  I suppose you could buy a blood glucose meter and text before and then after you've applied the mask to see if there is a significant change.  But I've never used a meter, so I bet someone with diabetes type 2 could provide you with more details on how to use it and when exactly to test, and maybe which one would be a good choice.  Looks like there is one for sale at Wal-Mart for $26.00 here:

http://www.walmart.com/ip/20750775?wmlspartner=wlpa&adid=22222222227015269787&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=40754014232&wl4=&wl5=pla&wl6=78606109952&veh=sem

Whether that's a piece of junk or not though, I have no idea.  Perhaps someone in your congregation has diabetes and could make suggestions?

As far as the sweating and heat, are you anywhere near menopause age?  If so, that's a toughy.  My wife has hot flashes regularly and virtually every night for many years and has found no solutions, though some have found that this or that has helped.  This website looks helpful:

http://www.healthline.com/health/menopause/understanding-hot-flashes#Overview1

Doing a lot of research and then lots of "trial and error" will no doubt produce the best results in your personal case.  I'm gonna guess that trying every option till you hit on something that works for you will be your best strategy.  But know this:  You are not alone.  You most definitely are not alone.  Keep on searching!

Update: I see by your profile that you are only 28 years old, so likely menopause is not the cause of your sweating, though one cannot rule that out entirely.  But I would add that if you've only recently begun low carb, you may be experiencing something that some call "low carb flu", something that usually passes in a few weeks.  But please see your doctor if troubles continue.

True you may be detoxing and you may have skin reactions and sugar changes as well as hormonal shifts. I added Maca powder and that has helped. It balances hormones.

I started to quote this post earlier and just as I did the battery on my tablet died. So the quote ended up being boosted with no comment.

I have never heard of anyone getting physically I'll from being hungry. I was wondering how long you went without eating. I am 66 years old and I have been fasted for as long as 3 days. A fast that lasts more than 1 day means that your body has to switch from burning glucose for fuel to burning ketone for fuel. Ketones are produced when you body burns fat. This is called ketosis. I have read that some people (because of genetics) are unable to make that transition.

A person's body normally goes into this fat burning/ketosis mode when they do a low-carb diet such as Atkins, when they fast, or when they do strenuous fat-burning exercise. I am not familiar with the paleo diet but, if it truly low-carb, I presume that your body goes into ketosis the same way. The drawbacks of the low-carb diet is constipation and horribly bad breath.

I have done Atkins years ago and will probably never do it again. The weight loss was great but the other effects mentioned are undesirable.

Fasting can also cause bad breath due to the body cleaning toxins from the body. Maybe that person you know that has bad breadth is not neglecting oral hygiene but is actually fasting.

I guess I'm weird. I've had stomach issues since I was a bitty girl. Even now I have to watch what I eat and drink or I get queasy. I think some of my upset stomach problems are because I get motion sick real easy. Was on a carnival ride at 7 years and the motion made me so sick my appendix ruptured. And at 11 was hospitalized for severe vomiting from a fishing trip. Today, many years later, if I walk too fast, move too much too soon in the first few hours when I get up I'll throw up if I don't eat something first. That's why I said what I did. My habit for about the last 9 months or so has been to eat about 1/2 potato with 1 egg and I feel good for 3 hours.

I tried fasting, NOPE! Off the charts sick. I do love Paleo, didn't realize I was already doing it until Miss Mouse suggested looking it up and I was pleased to know I was on track with it. Only had minor alterations to make to be all Paleo.

Now Atkins? Eesh, not for me. I gained 12 pounds in 2 weeks!! Found out I cannot eat that much meat but do much better with 2-3 oz of meat at a sitting. Darn, because I'm a carnivore!

I envy you Br. Randall, I'd love to fast, love to do other things too but I guess it'll wait until the new system. Sigh, one more thing to wait for the new system!

So many good posts here. In my small experience, one has to find what is working for them at a particular time in their life. I used to be a Weight Watcher lecturer. I joined at 136 lbs(which I thought was ginormous, having always kept between 120 and 130) at, 5 feet 6 inches. I was already within normal range, but they let me join to lose 10 lbs. I stayed between 117 and 123 for years (except during pregnancies). I also worked for a pre-packaged weight loss plan and some clients gained, while others lost. Then I developed severe asthma and started on steroids and antihistamines. About ten years ago, I could keep my weight down to 132 on a controlled carb program.  Now I have been in and out of the hospital and Doctor's appts and am on heavy duty steroids and antihistamines. I brought the package insert (of one of my meds) into my Primary Docs and showed her that weight gain was one of the side effects. She said, "yes, you will continue to gain weight on daily steroids and antihistamines, but if I take you off of them, you cannot breathe. What do you want, thin and dead, or heavier and breathing?"  I am still looking for my own answers. I went shopping for some staples and will try adding vegetable/fruit smoothies for at least one meal. Since I work through my lunch (unpaid), my general lunch is a light and fit yogurt. I am very happy to read about the successes that my brothers and sisters are having with a variety of approaches. It is true that some will gain weight on programs that work for others. Keep trying and keep sharing those recipes. I'm not giving up, yet.

I've found too that getting through the first 2 weeks without sugar and fried foods was the most difficult, after that your body doesn't crave it.

The juicer gives you a quick energy boost whereas a smoothie stays with you longer

I did Atkins induction (previously known as biological zero 'carb') for many months. Had ketostix. Never went into ketosis and never lost a gram. At other times I have been successful with controlled carbs. I had gone without sugar for quite some time, but got discouraged at my last doc's appt this month, so I allowed some sugar in my house, but it is gone now. I hope to be cleared by Monday to return to physical therapy and exercise. Hosp. took me off b/c every time I start any of my exercises, my coughing sounds like pneumonia, but it is just asthma.   I told my oldest son (not in the truth) about my medical dilemma and he said, "Don't worry Mom, pretty soon you'll be in the New System and won't have to worry about these health problems."
