The Imitation Game

Recommended Posts

My wife and I saw this movie last weekend while on a short break by the sea and thoroughly enjoyed it.

If you don't know what it is about, then briefly:

The film concerns the breaking of the "Enigma" code used by the Germans in WW2 and which was considered unbreakable. A mathematician, Alan Turing, was enlisted to help in this work, and it was he who ultimately succeeded in breaking the code, shortening the war by 2 years and saving millions of lives.

He was also a homosexual and while this aspect of his life is not explored explicitly in the movie, the man was later prosecuted for indecency and chemically castrated. He committed suicide shortly afterwards.

Only in 2013 was he given a posthumous royal pardon, and he is recognized now for his contributions during the war. His 'machine' was the forerunner of digital computers.

The film is very well made, but the performance of Benedict Cumberbatch as Turing is outstanding. You will hear a lot about him as Oscar season approaches, deservedly so.

There are brief sexual references in the film, you may wish to be aware of this before planning to see it.

On the whole I think this is an excellent film - not a film for children, the content would be confusing for younger ones, but teens upward would understand the themes.

As always, your conscience must guide you as to whether you would see this film. Do watch the trailer, though.

Thanks for telling us about this movie. :)

Benedict Cumberbatch has become an outstanding actor and the plot

of the movie sounds interesting.

It doesn't open in theaters until tomorrow here in the U.S.

Good. I was hoping they would leave that out.

Benedict Cumberbatch is a fantastic actor, and I would want to see this movie on his merits alone :)

They didn't leave it out completely, he had a relationship (non-sexual) as a boy with another boy at school, his relationship with the character played by Keira Knightly is obviously fraught because of his homosexuality, and his final arrest and conviction and castration is portrayed (castration by hormonal treatment of chemicals, that is).

None of this portrays his homosexuality in any other than a neutral way, it is not promoted, nor condemned, merely reported.

About the chemical thing? Its really disgusting buddy. No offence. Jehovah abhors things like that. I just gives me the willies.

Turing wasn't happy about it either. It was that or prison. As I said earlier, he committed suicide soon afterwards.

Lol ☺, I've got the WILLIES TOO!
