Tauma.... longest word

Recommended Posts

Taumatawhakatangihangakoauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu is the name of a little hill here in New Zealand.

The meaning of the above title is : The mountain or hill where Tamatea , the man with the big knees ,  climber of mountains and swallower of land who travelled around, played his nose flute to his loved one.

This is the longest word in the English vocabulary (Maori didn't have a written language until the English came along) and second longest word for a place in the world. The longest is either Welsh or Irish - can't remember.

It has been shortened to Taumata for obvious reasons ... and is located in the Hawkes Bay which is on the East Coast of the North Island.

Just thought you guys would like some interesting trivia.

<p>"Jehovah chooses to either 'reveal' or 'conceal' - cherish what he reveals and be patient with what he conceals."

Wouldn't want that word either Shali in a spelling bee.

I've known that word since I was in the 6th grade because at that time I was curious as to what the longest word in the English dictionary was, funny thing, I can remember that word 40 years later but not my phone number!

Don't live for the moment - live for the future! :D

Carlos wonder if I can? I'll give it a go.

I'll have to find a recording device the one on the puter isn't available cause im on the television screen a lot of programs don't work on this resolution. I'll get the boy to put it back onto the monitor.

Look what you've started Stormswift  :D   It gets crazier.....The Longest Word in the World (Chemical name of TITIN) - 189,819 letters:

This is funny because it takes 3hrs to pronounce it, and,the reader starts growing a beard, and around 2:09:20 the plant starts dying.     https://www.youtube.com/embed/NFR-ADakI-c?

The pronunciation is nothing like that though (the computerized one). In Maori the wh is pronounced F.

LindaH - that pronunciation is correct.

Love your post Yvette - I wonder what else we can dredge up.

Man always has to make EVERYTHING so complicated!  Can't wait till Jehovah takes us back to the language he intended for us to speak , I'm sure it's much simplier and filled with much more meaning per word than anything man could conjure up. (I realize a lot of you feel that is "Hebrew" - I was just refraining from saying anything in a dogmatic way since that is something yet to been seen)
