Quoting posts. Maybe some guide lines folks.

Recommended Posts

It really help to make conversations easier to follow when the person you are giving an answer to is quoted. I think we all agree on that point.

However. If you are referring to the OP or original post and there are less than 2 pages in the thread most realize that the post is referring to the OP.

However sometimes its easier to answer a post or person just by saying "To Peter" Or who ever you are responding to. I know its easy to hit the quote button but it makes a thread very messy for others to follow. Why do we need to scroll past the same post 4 or 5 times in a one page thread?

Can we keep that to when we are posting something that has to be directed to someone other than the OP? I know I for one would greatly appreciate it if we could.

I liken it to yelling to someone across the room during a dinner party.

I like to reduce the quoted text to just the part i am answering. Is that ok?

Makes it a lot easier to read especially if your answering a specific part of a post. Sorry I don't mean to be self rightous or anything. It was pointed out to me on another forum so now I try to do that everywhere.

I agree and I didn't think you sounded self-righteous and I wasn't being flippant, I just wanted to verify if my method was universally acceptable.

Personally I like the abbreviated quotes because it keeps the reply in context. Sometimes an old topic is resurrected with a new post and you have no idea what the post is talking about.

Richard, when I am using a PC that is how i do it, but when I am on a phone NOPE - then I either quote the whole thing or none (mostly). When I am using a tablet, it is 50/ 50.

I don't believe there is any need to quote anything if you're answering directly the last post on the thread...

If someone else posts while you're preparing your post you immediately click on 'edit' and rectify the situation as you might need to.

Posting time after time, as some do here, with 'and another thing' type of posts so someone might have two or three consecutive posts that could have been one should be done with the 'edit' facility.
