Ambiguous Signs

Recommended Posts

Ever notice that some of the signs at businesses are a bit "ambiguous"? At face value, they sometimes seem quite clear ..... but, if you actually read them for what they say (literally) they could mean something far from what is intended.

For example:

  • Clean Restrooms

Now, is this a sign bragging on the state of their restrooms (they are clean) - or is it a request for you to perform a service ..... I am sure they most likely mean the first idea, but, it could be taken as a request, or worse, an order.

  • Open 24 Hours

Does this sign mean they are open all day and night - or is it a sign denoting how long they have been open and it will soon change to Open 25 hours?

  • 10 Meals for $4.99 (Saw this one on a diner the other day)

Most likely this means that they have at least 10 menu options that cost $4.99 each - but, the way it is written it could be taken that you would get 10 meals for the extremely low cost of $4.99 (that would make them 50¢  each)

  • Employees Must Wash Hands

I have seen this in many restrooms, especially those of fast food places. To this day I have NEVER had an employee wash my hands .... they have not even offered. In fact, when I mention to them that I washed my own hands and asked if that is OK, they look at me like I am speaking an alien language.

OK - your turn ..... what ambiguous signs have you seen?

When our firstborn was a baby we were purchasing some supplies and saw some "Thick Baby Wipes"

Naturally I asked Emma if she thought our baby was particularly thick.

The conclusion of the matter, everything having been heard, is: Fear the true God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole obligation of man. Ec 12:13

First time I saw a sign like this was in Mencos, Colorado out in service. Kinda freaked me out.
