Make a Donation
The cost of operating JWTalk Forums has increased over the years. When I first started this community back in 2006, we were a very small group and I could get away with a low cost shared server and with using free open-source software. However, as the community became more popular and membership continued to grow, our host kept suspending my account for using too many of the shared server's resources (even though they advertise "unlimited space" and "unlimited bandwidth"), and so it became necessary for me to lease a 'Virtual Private Server' and move us to our new home if we were going to continue enjoying our community. Our VPS server bill includes "managed hosting" so that I can reach out to technical support if an issue arises that is beyond our ability to fix on our own, which has proven to be useful.
When we changed servers, we suddenly faced another problem. The free open-source software that we were using was no longer compatible with the latest web technology, and the developers of that forum software had long since abandoned the project and there was almost nothing in the way of technical support anymore. We decided then that choosing PAID forum software was the way to go, and we held a very successful donation drive in order to make the initial purchase for the community software we currently use. By continuing to pay to keep our software license active, we receive security updates, upgrades, new features, and technical support from the developers.
These expenses currently average about $900 per year, or $75 per month.
Now don't worry, for our JWTalk community isn't going anywhere. Even so, some members have expressed interest in helping to defray the operating costs of running this site because they have come to enjoy being part of this community very much. So by request, we have restore the Donation button on this page, which allows to to make a one-time donation, or set up a monthly recurring donation. However, please do not feel that you have to donate, as 2 Corinthians 9:7 says "Let each one do just as he has resolved in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion." There are no special membership perks attached to donating. Please be giving more often and more generously to the Worldwide Work because Kingdom interests are more important.
I appreciate the proddings and the sentiments I get to restore the Donation button. Such comments really do touch the heart, knowing that what we've created here with one another, our JWTalk community of brothers and sisters, means so much to many of you.
