The cost of operating JWTalk Forums has increased over the years. When I first started the community in 2006, we were small and could get away with a low cost shared server and free open-source software. However, as the community grew, our host kept suspending my account for using too many resources (even though they advertise "unlimited space" and "unlimited bandwidth") and so I had to lease a VPS server and move us to our new home. My monthly VPS server bill includes "managed hosting" so that I can reach out to technical support if an issue arises that is beyond our ability to fix on our own, which has proven to be useful.
When we moved, we suddenly faced another problem. The free open-source software was not compatible with the latest web technology, and the developers of that forum software had long since abandoned the project and there was almost nothing in the way of technical support. We decided then that choosing PAID forum software was the way to go now, and we held a very successful donation drive years ago in order to make the initial purchase for the community software. By continuing to pay to keep our software license active, we receive security updates, upgrades, new features, and technical support from the developer.
These expenses currently average about $840 per year, or $70 per month.
Now don't worry, for JWTalk isn't going anywhere. However some members have expressed interest in helping to defray the operating costs of running this community. So by request, we have restore the Donation button below, but please do not feel that you have to donate. 2 Corinthians 9:7 says "Let each one do just as he has resolved in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion." There are no special membership perks attached to donating. Please be giving more often and more generously to the Worldwide Work because Kingdom interests are more important.
I appreciate the proddings and the sentiments I get to restore the Donation button. Such comments really do touch the heart, knowing that what we've created here with one another, our JWTalk community of brothers and sisters, means so much to many of you.
