Fire in a San Antonio complex
trottigy and 7 others reacted to GeordieGirl for a topic
http://news4sanantonio.com/news/local/firefighters-battling-apartment-fire-on-northwest-side SAN ANTONIO -- Fire crews had to battle a fire at a Northwest Side apartment complex. Firefighters were called to the The Crossing apartments on the 1400 block of Babcock Road around 9:45 a.m. Saturday. The San Antonio Fire Department's Active Fires website shows 19 units were been sent to the scene. Multiple people we spoke with from inside the apartment, said a Jehovah's witness knocked on apartment doors, alerting them of the fire. "By the time I got outside, the flames were already on the roof," said Tim Rodriguez who lives at the apartment. "They were already coming out the door." The fire crews had the fire knocked out by around 10:30 a.m. but were still working one some hot spots. Firefighters said eight apartments were impacted by the fire and smoke. However, no one was injured. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. "I'm glad they came and knocked on my door this morning," said Rodriguez. "They pretty much saved my life."8 points -

Ok, I know this sounds awful. If I didn't make the mistake and then drink it myself I wouldn't believe it. I got done with a very difficult day and was ready for a gin and tonic. Poured the gin over a full glass of ice, lime gin. Then, as I reached in the fridge for the tonic, I stared at the coffee maker thinking about morning coffee (ugh, wish u girls could just do one thing at a time) I grabbed the cream and proceeded to put cream on my gin! Gag, yes I did. I only put as much as in a coffee. Not wanting to waste good gin I simply filled the rest of the glass with tonic. You know what? It's really, really good! Tastes like Captain Morgan's Loco Nut. That stuff is way to sweet for me but lime gin, cream and tonic is perfect....and low carb too! Be brave and try it. A gluten scientist explains why gluten-free diets are terrible for you
GeordieGirl and one other reacted to hatcheckgirl for a topic
Oh so true! Eating fresh foods is the way to go. However, hasn't satan's system made it just so convenient to take "shortcuts" with our health, and our children are addicted to high sugar and (bad) fat diet, no longer content with a piece of fruit for a snack? It's set us all up for dietary disasters of all sorts, and coupled with general declining air quality, contaminants in our food cycle etc, the human race can't keep going like this. For those who have the worst of these dietary issues, you've helped explain a lot with your posts above. Thanks for that enlightenment. My advice from my dietician was specific for my case. The world uses a legitimate illness to label foods to seem "healthier" than they really are. We can't take food labelling for granted and need to delve into it more to make sure what we are eating.2 points -
The Universe Should Not Exist
digital_dreamer and one other reacted to Wm-Scott for a topic
As much as I would like to see direct miracles in creation of the universe, these problems with human cosmological theories rather show man's limited understanding since Jehovah no doubt used the natural laws he had just put in place to create the universe. The math used in creation seems to be for the moment beyond human comprehension. But sometimes that is simply because we are too blind to see the answer staring us in the face. Once we see it, then the solution becomes obvious. I wonder if these scientists were willing to use the G word that then they could understand the mathematics behind creation. Assuming the answer is random causes them to look for random causes instead of looking for patterns of design that you would expect from a highly intelligence creator. Sometimes I think the evidence is dragging the cosmologests kicking and screaming to a place they do not want to go. For the angels who witnessed creation, this must be hilarious.2 points -

Movie about Sampson Wow
Good-O reacted to Stormswift for a topic
I think the danger is making it about the violence, and maybe this movie wont - just like in the past with some versions of Moses it became about a battle between two brothers as in the Prince of Egypt not the vindication of Jehovah as it was about. No-one can say that the violence shouldn't be included, but knowing the world they will not only glorify it, but amplify it until the message is lost.;Hope not in this case.1 point -
We just watched this movie yesterday on DVD. What a depressing flick! One scripture that constantly crossed my mind was The movie portrays the story of the "founder" of the McDonald's corporation, Ray Crock... I mean Kroc... who stole the idea of a fast-food restaurant with efficiently developed interaction processes in a kitchen, along with the name of the restaurant from the actual founders Richard and Maurice McDonald. During his campaign to make McDonald's a nationwide phenomenon, Kroc constantly tries to "modernize" the idea of the McDonald's by changing some things to the dismay of Richard and Maurice. One prime example is, to save money, he and some others attempt to replace the actual ice-cream milk-shake with powdered shakes. Driven by his idea of franchising the concept across America, he mortgages his house and ditches his wife Ethel, who died a few years after the divorce, and a few years later he married a somewhat more driven person, Joan Smith, who was a married woman with child. At some point in the movie he meets a clever young man called Harry J. Sonneborn, who becomes a critical advisor of Kroc heling him to hijack the McDonald's trademark and idea and to make it his own. Sonneborn also got into severe rows with Kroc and left McDonald's as early as 1967, only a few years after he helped Kroc basically rob the actual founders of their concept. As sad as the story is, and as horrible as this guy seems to have been, I found the story to be a great showcase of how corporatism / capitalism started to overtake the idea of the American dream somewhere around the 50'ies and 60'ies. The little man comes up with a great idea and the greedy man shows up and steals it to rake in the profit. To me, the fifties and sixties were the era where things stopped being wonderful and everything started being efficient, artificial, chemical, unnatural, profitable, and I think McDonald's and this story is a great example of how true that is. Don't watch the movie on an empty stomach or you'll desperately crave an authentic fifties McDonald's burger.1 point

If the Bible were accurately depicted on screen - especially the Hebrew Scriptures - there is no way it wouldn't be rated R. There is TONS of violence in the Bible. Even exactly as it happened (not "glorified for Hollywood") much of it would be hard to look at. I just watched the trailer and it looks like I'd imagine a story about Samson to be. Even a documentary of the Days of Atonement... thousands of animals slaughtered for sacrifice - all for a good cause but who wants to see it? A lot of people did in real life, however.1 point

New World Explorer reacted to kejedo for a topic
A single sister is leaving and I have been invited to a sisters-only gathering. It will be basically appetizers/snacks. I wanted to make high heeled cupcakes, and told the sis 'covering' food. She informed me the flavor is chocolate and the colors are cranberry and yellow. I might change my mind b/c I have not made these before but wanted to try them for a Sisters only shindig. If you have made them. what holds the pieces together best? I don't want to make the icing glue with raw eggs. If you have made them, are those candy melts useful? I also was thinking of inviting the teenage girls from our local cong. but this may not be viable. It is very difficult to schedule with them, and it looks like this project may take more than one day and long waits. Would love to hear from any who have tried this. I may change my food contribution.1 point -
And since they know that 99% of their customers will be part of the fad diet rather than an actual celiac sufferer, they'll be more lax with their standards since they know that almost nobody will be affected. Case in point, Cheerios does not meet the Canadian government standards for limiting cross-contamination, yet in the US they are continuing to use the label anyway, under the assumption that if cross contamination does occur almost nobody would be affected.1 point

It’s not click bait. They talk about what the title says. This, or you saw some other video. Incorrect. Gluten-free refers to all food where gluten has been removed. There is plenty of money in making GF foods, just as there is in making lactose free foods. The reasons they are selling in your stores is not because they are good for you, but because people are willing to pay 3 times as much. I’m not really sure what you mean. Of course any fortified food is done so synthetically. It is a WHO recommendation to fortify wheat. Nutrients regularly used in grain fortification prevent diseases, strengthen immune systems, and improve productivity and cognitive development. The idea that gluten-free is good for the general population is wrong, just like it’s wrong that lactose free is good just because your stomach rumbles a bit. Note: I am not talking about celiac or lactose allergy. Against the Grain (The New Yorker)1 point

We try to eat simple. I steam most of the vegetables. I do several at a time. The dense veggies, (squash, carrots, etc, go in first, then the fluffier veggies, (cauliflower, broccoli) get that 20 minutes... We buy the, sorry for the term, expensive chicken. It leads a decent life, and is killed decently. Then we eat the poor thing. Baked. We eat beans and brown rice. Whole grain bread, on occasion. In the tomatoe season, salads are wonderful. But, kale and cabbage salads are fine, too. Winter. (Dressed up with raisins, seeds, nuts, even fruit!) I get the best dressings possible. I am not a dressing person, and actually need to make my own. To me, some are stale tasting, upon opening. Same with mayonnaise. If the salad is good enough, skip the dressing. We do eat red meat, but not in excess. Chicken, beans, tofu. Tofu. I know there are mixed reports, but we have to eat, and it’s a decent protein. We cook it like a steak, using avocado oil and amino acids, (Braggs) we use that instead of tamari. Golden brown, a little crispy... No fake butter. (One molecule from plastic) We enjoy eggs, dairy products, also. Mixed reviews there, but, as I said, we have to eat! And drink. I don’t use low fat anything. The eggs are local eggs. A little pricy, but there is a real difference in the taste. We use local honey. We do have smoked salmon and even acorn soup. (Acorn soup, not regularly, a real process to process the nuts, but we can, and do the process) Yes, we eat pizza, ice cream and treats, moderately . I’m a firm believer that if you eat sensibly most of the time, those treats are well deserved. Today, we are eating smoked salmon soup, from yesterday, and, maybe a salad for our mid day meal. We are older and eat in the morning, and at mid day, well, later, about 2:30. Then, maybe popcorn in the evening. I take supplements daily also. And, I try to eat what is local and seasonal. I will never adjust to watermelon and grapes in the winter time!1 point

I will start this comment by prefacing with this: In HS, one of my daughters took "Statistics". One of the things she learned is that you can make numbers say almost anything you want them to. Now, onto my comment. There may be some statistics that indicate that divorce is going down .... but, do those statistics also show that marriage rates are also going down? Keep in mind, you live in Stockholm, not the US. I am not basing my comments on a list of numbers someone has decided prove a certain point. I am talking about what I see on a daily basis, since I live in the US. When people simply move in together and "call" themselves "husband and wife", they do no need to divorce to split apart - they just move out from each other. With less people getting married before having a "family", of course there could be less divorces. That does not mean that there are less people breaking families apart, it just means there are less people doing it legally. Now, back to the topic..... McDonalds today does not taste anything like they did back in the 1960's1 point

Yes I'm familiar with that. This is why I used the term a major down turn. Even after that turning point in 1914, things have progressively gotten worse. True? from my observation and many others as well, especially in the sixties and forward the world took a notable turn for the worse as regards everyday morals. Womens lib brought in a more liberal view of sexual behavior for women. Movies and tv became more and more liberal with language and sex. Mini skirts and tight fitting clothing and bikinis has become the norm. More protest and questioning of authority, children disrespectful, divorce rate, broken families. Upsurge in drug abuse. Homosexuality has gradually become just another lifestyle. etc etc.... Immoral behavior has always been happening, but now it's accepted as normal and a persons right, without the stigma that existed prior. From my observation (a child of the 50s and 60s) the 60s or thereabouts was that 2nd turning point. An open change in attitude toward age old moral standards that most people at least pretended to adhere to.1 point

Gluten-free is bad for diabetics too, who try to modify their carb instake to regulate their sugars. A few good quality carbs, such as whole grain bread with seeds is what works best. While I’ve never done mushrooms, I did do 3 hits of some powerful LSD once which is also a hallucinogen. The experience started off great but then ended up being the worst drug experience I’ve ever had. I had scary hallucinations and visions for over 10 hours. I was scared and thought I would never snap out of it. I wouldn’t recommend doing any drug for any said benefits. Any temporary “benefits” are not worth the permanent brain damage. Plus, drugs are a good way to loose your relationship with Jehovah.1 point
