  1. Due to some in-house changes we are making at JWTalk Forums, the Daily Text being delivered to your email will probably cease. We've been providing this service since 2013 in a roundabout way using a service called FeedBurner, which reads the RSS feed for this forum and sends it's contents to those who have subscribed. To date, we have just 635 email subscribers, which is the same amount we've had since 2013. In other words, for over 5 years hardly anyone has joined the list. And this actually makes perfect sense. With our Watchtower CD-Rom, JW Library App, and wol.jw.org - reading the days text straight from the source is easy to do, not to mention that many people ignore emails these days anyway with the popular rise of mobile notifications and messenger apps. We WILL keep posting the Daily Text though. So if you have been reading it here at JWTalk, you don't have to worry. However, we are considering making the following changes: Instead of a dedicated Daily Text forum, we will have a Daily Text thread pinned in the Interchange of Encouragement & Worldwide Brotherhood forum, which is also visible to the public. By having the Daily Text as a topic pinned in a more popular forum, we hope to see more comments and participation from other members, perhaps even incorporating the somewhat popular 'summed up in 3 words' game. At the end of the year, we will unpin the topic and start a new topic for the year ahead. We're working to keep JWTalk sensible and well-organized by creating new forums where needed, and eliminating dead forums that don't draw much interest. We believe the Daily Text is important and deserves more attention and participation than it has been getting, and we hope these changes will help do that. Your brother, - Bob

  4. When I was in school, this just did not happen. The biggest problem was bullies, the worst that would happen would have been a fist fight or something along these lines. Malls were where teens walked around and socialized, kids played outside, only coming in when they were called for dinner. Parents didn't necessarily see their kids and they weren't worried- they just hollered out the front door, knowing that kids would hear them and come home. Even the airports.. I remember walking a friend of mine right to the boarding area and being able to watch the plane take off. I still can hardly believe how bad things have gotten. How are kids supposed to learn anything if they are attending school with bullet proof back packs in a classroom with buckets of rocks? My kids don't go outside without me, and nobody is particularly comfortable at events with large numbers of people. We occasionally will go to something, but remain aware of our surroundings. The airports are a nightmare now; we avoid flying whenever possible. How people can continue to take no note, I have no idea. Where the solution is not seems to be very clear at this point.

But, this from the NY Times shows Churches are really being attacked. a 'Mega Church' is demolished because it is 'unregistered'.

  10. The rocks are also the last thing for defense: "Staff and students in the Blue Mountain district are trained in a program called "ALICE", which stands for alert, lockdown, inform, counter and evacuate. The rocks are part of the "counter" portion of training, fighting back if the intruder makes their way into the classroom." But "the tactic has been criticised by security expert Kenneth Trump, president of security consulting firm National School Safety and Security Services, who called the idea illogical and irrational and said it could possibly cost lives. He said arming kids with rocks filled an emotional security need, but did not actually enhance security." Which is what I see with the gun protests by school children gaining momentum. People are so freaked out (understandably) that they can't see how else to protect their children. So sad. The terror those school kids feel by risking going to school is the same sort of terror the terrorists from ISIS and other similar organisations inflict on their targets. People cannot go around doing everyday normal things without looking over their shoulders, feeling uneasy, or downright scared to go there - think concerts, sports games, schools, shopping malls.

  13. One of my former bosses did that. It was his own son that came into the shop with a shotgun. The kid shot at one of the other employees, who, in his haste to escape, had tripped and fell just as the blast went over his head, missing completely. The shooter turned towards his dad just in time to get a hammer in the face. He wound up loosing an eye because of that.

  18. From new scientist March 24 2018 My favourite pass time IF YOU are one of the countless millions who fret about not getting enough sleep, there is now something else to keep you awake: the possibility that you are not only sleep-deprived, but also dream-deprived. It turns out that dream sleep is one of the biggest casualties of our collective sleep debt. It is more common at the end of a night's slumbers, so tends to be cut short by the need to get up for work or school. And far from being a pleasurable but superfluous state, that dreamy sleep in the morning turns out to have some important functions for your brain (see “How a lack of dreams could be messing with your mind”). This is yet more evidence that Western society pays too little attention to the importance of good sleep. Your doctor probably asks you about diet and exercise, but how often about how well you sleep? Schools persist in opening their doors earlier than strictly necessary despite good evidence that a later start is better for teenage pupils. Paying off sleep debt at the weekend is seen as slothful indulgence rather than part of a healthy lifestyle. We must all wake up to the need for good sleep or risk sleepwalking our way to problems. This article appeared in print under the headline "Dream on"

  21. Sunday, March 25 With humility consider others superior to you.—Phil. 2:3. A humble person is generally also a modest person, able to estimate accurately his own abilities and achievements, to acknowledge his mistakes, and to accept suggestions and new ideas. Humility greatly pleases Jehovah. In the Bible, modesty similarly refers to having a proper estimate of ourselves and an awareness of our limitations. In the original language of the text, the emphasis seems to be on how that awareness should affect our behavior toward others. When might we start to think or act immodestly? Consider a few of the warning signs. We might be taking ourselves or our privileges too seriously. (Rom. 12:16) We might be drawing attention to ourselves in inappropriate ways. (1 Tim. 2:9, 10) Or we might be advocating strong opinions solely on the basis of our position, connections, or personal thinking—not even being aware that we have crossed the line from modesty to presumptuousness.—1 Cor. 4:6. w17.01 3:6-8

  22. I watched this movie with my wife yesterday. I liked the acting and screenplay a lot, and the movie was set up like a classic Agatha Christie with not too many modern additions or artistic freedoms except for a bit of racial diversity. I suppose most of you will know the story from the book or an earlier movie adaptation. The movie was very touching, especially towards the end, to the point that I had tears in my eyes. The story illustrates how one individual with one act can cause so much suffering as to destroy the lives of so many different people. It obviously revolves around the usual topic of seeking revenge for the sake of closure for such a despicable act, from a very human standpoint. In any case, it made me think a lot about how humans despise wicked acts in the depths of their heart, seek justice and ways of dealing out justice, and yet they are not able to really fix and undo the terrible things that have been done. I was very sad after watching the film, but I have to say it made me all the more happy to have the truth and to know Jehovah will bring supreme justice to our lives at some point and even undo all the suffering that has been inflicted.

  28. Some years ago, a brother who was being trained as a substitute C.O., asked an experienced C.O. what he thought was the most important quality a C.O. should have. He thought the answer was going to be something other than what the C.O. told him. His answer was, "humility." Think about it.

Thanks - I am sure there will be differences, after all, David Suchet was a but "unique" in his portrayal of Poirot. I do have an open mind when watching a remake and am willing to give this one a fair chance.

    Murder on the Orient Express

The problem with this movie is that the comparison with David Suchet's series and with the 1974 version is unavoidable, and yet they are completely different. Branagh's Poirot is a very different character. Yet his performance is remarkable as is that of most actors in the movie. And the setting and atmosphere are superb.

  34. My son's 5th grade class went to see Wonder in the theatre, and he loved it so much he couldn't wait for it to become available to watch at home. When it did, he made me rent it so the family could watch it. I loved the movie. It was clean, family friendly, and reached the heart. I would recommend this movie to anybody.

One point that I remember is if you are confronted by the shooter to start throwing things at them, throw anything and everything you can. It distracts the shooter, may affect their aim and possibly allow time for someone to stop them.

  37. This video was very reminiscent of Edward Alijan's talk: Have No Anxiety, which is my favorite. So nice to have this on JW.org for all to see. That talk was when I started using a scriptural shotgun method of Bible truths that disprove and help reorient my insane thoughts.

  38. That talk was incredible. Really good points made about self worth and about being peaceable. I liked how he brought out that Paul didn’t keep his confrontation with Peter private. Peter could’ve held a grudge against Paul for writing about it but he gained the proper point of view. I found it interesting when he mentioned that feelings of worthlessness are really Satan’s projections of his situation. He can’t benefit from the ransom, he has no prospect of everlasting life, he can never enjoy Jehovah’s friendship and love. He wants us to feel the same way as him. That was powerful. Never thought about it that way before. I’ve heard talks from Brother Aljian before and his way of explaining of things is simple and reaches the heart. I heard him at a CA once and you could hear a pin drop in that auditorium. Everyone was really glued to the talk. His way of speaking reminds me of a local brother who gives talks in a similar manner and his brother does as well. Their speaking styles are very similar and enjoyable.

  42. Fortunately, the topic here at JWTalk was already clear and accurate and didn't have a spin on it. The Snopes article repeats with more explanation what the FOX article and interview already clearly stated. The schools response/excuse was that they were not supposed to leave any student unattended - which is true. But Jacob's point was that it clearly divided the students into 2 camps, and would give the appearance that he sided with the gun supporters and/or would be disrespecting the lives of the 17 students who died in the recent school shooting. He didn't like that he had no other options given, and didn't want to be associated with either side. Convening with the pro gun group would give the anti gun group the false appearance that he was pro gun. He wanted it to be clear to everyone that he was not taking sides. Personally, I think the kids deserves extra credit for taking a stand for his beliefs.

  44. Today it's not uncommon for people to advocate for our evolution by pointing at athletic improvements and IQ. We know however that the further back we go ,the closer we were to perfection. This would mean that our ancestors would be fitter and smarter than us. More "potential". Today we have the advantage of collective knowledge from years pas t and better overall education system which teaches most youth all of this accumulated knowledge, but how much would we learn as "individuals" without such? This is where I'd say our ancestors would have the advantage. If our ancestors has all the knowledge and tech we do today, from Noah's time, I'm sure they'd be far more advanced than we are today. Just look at the Egyptians, even today they mystify people, there are debates and confusion over how they built their structures. They did some bad health practices like all ancient cultures, but they were at the very start of human existence, these people could only experiment to learn. (Which is why the cleanness of Israel is so evidently divine education). What is true also is that we "do" physically adapt, whilst we do not evolve, wherever we are, our generations will change physically in accordance to environment within the limitation of our kinds. On this subject I found two really interesting videos which actually go into depth of our "supposed" superiority to our ancestors and confirm the thoughts I have personally had for a long time on this subject. In essence, we have less natural potential now but more collected knowledge from experience, the first humans had greater potential but less knowledge and experience. Much like comparing a child to an adult, if both are the same age, only then can we say who is really "higher in IQ".
    1 point
  45. Isn't it interesting how supporters of evolution contradict themselves? They want to point out athletic improvement and IQ as supporting evolution, yet will turn around and say man has not been recording history long enough to record any evolutionary advances in his biology. When pressed as to why we don't see evolution happen, they respond with the statement that evolution is slow.

  46. We had videos in the 2015 and '16 conventions about how quickly our freedom can evaporate. We really need to come to grips mentally with this possibility and prepare physically. The GB has been stressing that we need to seriously consider how quickly this can happen and have a family and congregation plan of action. Our congregation has updated our medical directives and our current addresses, phone numbers and our emergency contacts both locally and out-of-state. It will help us to react logically when/if we have an emergency. We were totally unprepared in 2013 when we had a major flood. Most people in our town were unaware that there was a problem but two mobile home parks were hit with a 20 foot wall of water. There were 5 families in our congregation who lost everything. We counted it as dress rehearsal for the GT. Our gobags are ready this time. We are much more aware of the suffering of our dear families world wide because we have electronic devices to inform us. For most of us, all we can do is pray for them and we certainly do.
