  2. The power strip is a great idea I had never thought about! Shawn, most phone (and laptop, tablet, etc) chargers already support both voltages. The different voltage is only a problem when you connect other electrical devices. But in principle you shouldn't need any of those. Hotels always have hair-dryers and kettles and irons. OTOH I was looking at SIM cards. There are some offers for tourists, but I don't think they are worth it. The best option is to go to a phone shop and ask for the prepaid plan that better fits you. Make sure it includes some minutes for international calls if you plan to phone home. For God's sake don't buy the card at the airport! That's the advice I received, but when I arrived in LA I felt so helpless without data that I bought a SIM card at the airport... and I ended up paying 75$ for a card that actually costs 25$.

Oh yes, black widow spiders in grapes. I remember....Long, long ago, and far, far away..... actually in Madras Oregon 1958, a semi truckload of grapes overturned in front of the trailercourt where this poverty stricken pioneer and his partner Gary lived. The truck driver was trying to find another rig they could offoad the grapes to. Being a young entrepreneur and hungry, I made a deal with the driver to provide a crew to go into the trailer, which was on its side off the road, to load the grapes on to a new truck. The trucking company decided it wasn't practical and they gave the grapes away. Me and my pioneer partner opened the side door to the trailer and passed out wooden crates of grapes to all comers. We had only been at it a few minutes when we noticed a lot of spiders in the crates. Then we noticed they weren’t just any spiders they were all black widows. We assumed the black widows moved into the crates when they were stacked for the winter in roofed over storage areas. One of our crew abandoned the job immediately but Gary and I persisted until all our brothers that wanted grapes got their full supply. I have wondered if black widow spiders made the jelly taste better or did it give an additional kick to the wine. That was the same year that we pioneers feasted on a rattlesnake that made the mistake of crossing the road in front of a bunch of hungry pioneers. O-o-om good, fried rattle snake. I wouldn't say it if it wasn't so.

  4. The US may be ready to target Iran’s nuclear facilities soon amid a bellicose exchange of threats between the two countries, ABC reported. Australia can apparently aid the mission, should an attack take place. The outlet cites senior figures in the government of Malcolm Turnbull, who believe the United States is “prepared” to bomb Iran's nuclear sites. The grim prediction suggests the move could happen as early as next month. The report comes at a time when tensions between Washington and Tehran are hitting boiling point. In one of the latest exchanges of threats between the two nations, Iran said that a war with it would be the “mother of all wars.” This prompted Donald Trump to issue a harsh response, warning that Iran would face“consequences the likes of which few throughout history have ever suffered before.” Australia, a member of global intelligence alliance known as the Five Eyes, is reportedly poised to play a part in the operation, providing its defense facilities to identify targets in Iran. The same assistance may be offered by the UK, while two other parties in the alliance – Canada and New Zealand – “would be unlikely to play a role in any military action in Iran,” according to ABC. https://www.rt.com/news/434399-us-ready-bomb-iran/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=RSS

  5. As Commander -In-Chief he can order an attack at anytime. That is why many, even in congress are worried about him having control of the nuclear football. Congress has not issued a declaration of war since 1942. The US has fought many wars since 1942. Sometimes Congress passes a resoultion approving military action sometimes not. The US invasion of Grenada was one of these occasions. "The invasion and occupation constituted, within the meaning of the War Powers Clause of the U.S. Constitution, a war against the people of Grenada. The President, however, at no time sought the required congressional approval."

  8. Not just RT reporting it. https://www.cbsnews.com/video/israel-poised-to-strike-iran/ https://sputniknews.com/world/201807271066726411-trump-iran-strike/ https://www.news.com.au/technology/innovation/military/donald-trump-is-reportedly-prepared-to-strike-iran-and-australia-will-play-a-helping-role/news-story/6f3a6f20410cafde14a0bd8a4054bc09 Seems to be a whole lot of sites I found just by googling it- who got it first though and if that makes it reliable or not I guess we shall see. The whole world is a ticking bomb. Mr Trump is liable to do anything at anytime, either in line with what is being reported or contrary to it. Just a further reminder that we need to be readying ourselves by making sure we are fully under Jehovah's protection when the time does come ... whether it be this year or further into the future. Since New Zealand is not an ally of the US our country is probably less interested ... but will be interesting nonetheless. (although NZ is ally of Australia)l

Actually, that coffee cup would be more than the entire plant — with 5,600 employees producing 350,000 cars annually — has put in a landfill in nearly the last 15 years. That's right, Subaru's Lafayette facility has been zero landfill since 2004, making it the first auto assembly plant in the United States to reach that milestone.

  13. A very interesting point from the above book, something I had not really thought about before. When discussing the existence of God, if the atheist refers to evolution then it is totally irrelevant! Evolution, even if it were true in all its Darwinian glory, has no bearing on the existence of God. Evolution can only operate on life (if it operates at all) so the real question is: How did life originate? No-one has any idea, say all the scientists researching this area. To get from non-living chemicals to the "simplest" of cells i.e. the bacterium, is absolutely beyond any scientific explanation. I put 'simplest' in quotes because a bacterium is anything but simple! The dna, the rna, the nanomachinery, ribosomes, cell membrane etc etc. are incredibly complex, not to mention its ability to self-replicate.

  14. We are planning a Bethel trip for early Fall next year. We will visit all three locations. We will have a few kids in the group (6y - 14y). We will be staying three extra days. I'm looking for suggestions on what to do in the area. No more than 2 hours driving distance. The hotel will be centrally located (to the three locations). We are looking for nature activities. At least outside activities. We don't want to go into the city. Thanks for all suggestions and tips 🙂

    California Fires

Carr fire in Redding about 2 hours from us... Already, two people have died in the Carr Fire, one a private bulldozer operator killed Thursday, the other a Redding city firefighter working in a canyon area in Redding’s northwest area, where much of the devastation occurred Thursday night. The fire already has destroyed dozens of homes, forced evacuation orders for more than 38,000 residents and is threatening nearly 5,000 homes. Fire officials say its erratic, unpredictable nature is a sign of how much peril tinder-dry California faces from wildfires. ...estimates at least 100 homes were destroyed overnight Thursday as the flames jumped the Sacramento River and raced into the outskirts of Redding. More than 37,000 residents have been evacuated.

  24. A pioneer and dear friend, lost her daughter in a brutal murder. I curled up with her in her bed as she sobbed. We know how to offer comfort to the world but, how do we comfort a JW? Yes, it "should" be the same but, it's not. We know why God allows suffering, until it happens to us. Feeling helpless, wanting this wickedness to end.

Some of my favorites: Starwars IV - VIII Castaway (Gotta love Wilson) Jurassic Park Kicking and Screaming I know that I'm forgetting a lot, but I don't watch movies that much anymore. Some people mentioned some movies that I had forgotton about that I quite like: Second hand lions The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (great soundtrack ) Emperors New Groove (oh man, this was funny) ---- Also, Side note: I just watched "2001: A Space Odyssey" for the first time because I heard it was free and HD at archive.org. That... movie... was... weird... haha. That being said it had some really cool special effects. Just like the original Star Wars' effects. Little spaceship models flying through space - pretty cool. Good music too. The whole story was weird thought, I think it was about the future human evolution? Not sure. But the HAL 9000 portion was good. If someone ever wanted to watch that movie again with me, I would probably only watch that part haha

Excuse me. but I think you are talking about two different birds. I love to hear mourning doves. I haven't heard them for years since we do not have mourning doves in Alaska but we have lots of the other doves (pigeons) and yes they are very territorial and combative. They tend to be various colors, even white (the doves they set loose on special occasions). The mourning doves I remember looked like the pic Old attached to his note and I love to hear them on a quiet summer evening. Alas, I miss them now. There was good info about all the different kinds of doves in Wikipedia.

    Coffee break

I think I have shared this in the other coffee threads but it doesn't hurt to reheat it.. Peets Coffee gives a local Assembly Hall several pallets of dated coffee about once a month. The brothers distribute it to the other Assembly Halls in the area so about once a month we receive a pallet full of coffee bags. Last year they even provided a grinder so during the SKE classes our 'coffee girls' were able to make freshly ground Peets coffee each morning for the students. The AH overseer will give away some of the coffee before it expires so there are always bags of different blends available to take home. The AH is now being used to host LDC meetings so the brothers and sisters also get to take a bag... The story is that Peets use to give the coffee to another religious organization but that group was reselling it and that violated the terms of the donation so someone suggested they donate it to the AH. Cool.

  33. We have those in Oz and what really gets right up my nose is the fact that if you take out one of these funeral plans/ insurance when you're 30 or even 40 and don't die till you're 70 or 80, the ridiculous amount of money that has been paid into these schemes is off the wall. To my mind it is a scam of the tallest order and just plays on peoples' emotions. Just another greedy, self-serving con!! Now I ranted. Soz!!

  34. perhaps because I'm of a similar generation; i see thing similar in my own short experience or 'dip' into Social media... I tried a facebook account specifically for a work related reason only to find myself (naively) deluged almost instantly by 'friends' most of whom were only in my address book as having emailed once perhaps. I then ran the risk of upsetting people who wanted to be included... even people I am very friendly with in the congregation. I found it overwhelming and knew instantly I just didn't have the time for 'any' of it. around the same time I tinkered with Instagram only to be distracted/annoyed by constant pings of the 'few' who posted seemingly all the time.. (it wasn't but it felt like it.) You made a good point about the reaction of some who might see posts. In a similar vain this can happen anywhere; not just social media. We live on a tight budget. We think twice when out whether £8.00 for two coffees is worth it next to the food I know we could buy. We're not skint and don't make it a plan to tell everyone what we think of as possibly wasting money; it's just that we don't see it as 'worth it' for us.. With that mindset in place it was a little embarrassing when a brother threw a question at me at an end of field service coffee break in a sisters home. 'Which restaurants do you use?'... 'We don't' I spluttered out. 'Hmm; well they can be expensive can't they' he said quickly and changed the subject. Neither of us were too embarrassed to carry on any conversation. I do know of a few though who really are on the breadline and that could have been thoughtless in front of them. So when posting 'look at this I bought' can be taken very differently by different people. Fabulous Greg.. Thanks for posting it.

The world is goofy. Thanks for the site to help us make up our minds, brother. When I protest going to a R rated movie with my husband, he says they probably threw in a cuss word or two. No biggie. I’ve sort of learned to look at the major theme of the movie, and some times I will see it down the road on tv. (Hoping it was cleaned up) i’m not hysterical about it, because I know some R rated movies are decent, but I don’t think going to a movie theater to see one is okay. (Will someone see me and think I’m a hypocrite?) plus there are certain things I just keep to myself. There are ones that would think I was next to falling out of the truth if they knew under whatever circumstances I saw an R rated movie. Each to his or her own! As I said, the world is goofy.

    What if? ...

What if Adam and Eve had remained faithful? Where would we be now in terms of everyday functions, likes, dislikes, accomplishments, goals? Music for instance ... we have made great progress in the field of music, from beethoven through to music we all cherish today - but we have made some backward steps too often because imperfection, lifestyles, sadness, depression have produced songs that evoke deep emotions or songs that are downright assaulting to the ears. What do you think our music would sound like today if imperfection wasn't stamped on our melodies or lyrics? Food? What type of food would we be growing or eating? Housing and technology - I wonder what Jehovah had in mind for us all before mankind had sinned? Our languages and ethnic differences? Arts and Entertainment? What roads would these have ventured down? In the NS we will be rewinding or unwinding many aspects of our every day life, that is true, but if we were perfect now, serving Jehovah as we would should have now, how different would it be even from our wonderful future? This is a thread for pure musings and thought provoking ideas of where society would be now ... over 6,000 years after creation. (For the sake of this discussion we will ignore the fact that most if not all of us wouldnt be here, but would be a whole different array of individuals).

I know of a sister who, with her daughter, went to see Panthers (Lol. I'm probably leaving out a word but y'all know what it is). Now I couldn't see that because for one, the violent aspect of it. Two, during the 1960s I have history, with especially my mother, of being involved in the civil rights movement. She marched, we did also, I even wore Afros, etc even after baptism until a brother spoke with me (more like kept giving me that look, lol) watching something like Panthers I feel might bring back those feelings and attitude. I mean, I'm not saying that I'm totally free of such, more like laden in the shadows. It's something like, to me, an alcoholic having to stay away from alcohol. Yet he/she is still an alcoholic and will be until this system ends. We all have things to work on, some continuously such as myself. I apologize if I've stepped on some toes here with Acrimony. It wasn't my intention. Please forgive me.

I just checked it out the trailer. It sounds like a chick-flick, so I am not surprised, lol. This is a good question. On the one hand, what we choose to watch is a conscience matter. There is no "rule" that rated R movies are off limits. On the other hand, I would be very, VERY cautious when recommending a rated R movie to someone else. I personally don't depend on the MPAA rating system. Sometimes a movie can be rated R here in the USA and no witnesses will watch it, and the same movie can be rated 14 by another countries rating system and almost every witness over there will have seen it. Instead, I prefer to check out https://www.commonsensemedia.org when making entertainment choices. It gives a good breakdown of what one can expect to find in a movie they are considering watching. The Common Sense Media rating for Acrimony is 16+ and the full review is here: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/movie-reviews/acrimony And with that, we leave it up to the conscience decision of others whether they will choose to watch it, while at the same time not passing judgment on those who have chosen to do so.

Too many to list, but my wife got me hooked on Benny & Joon. Now we not only watch it but invite others over for dinner and a movie. Sometimes the others cook and we bring the movie!
