  1. Got to the Hall this morning and an elder points out that my rear driver's side tire is going down--FAST. By the time the meeting ended, the tire was flatter than flat and I had no idea how to access the spare. The elder had just been to a yard sale two days earlier where, for the cost of a whole two bucks, he was able to purchase a brand new car battery powered tire inflator. Took a while, but he managed to get 40 lbs of air into the tire and then he followed me all the way to my house, to make sure I wouldn't be stranded somewhere along the 30 miles of rural highway. Such loving care for Jehovah's flock. We are so blessed.

I am much the same as you. I can still wear the jeans I wore 30 years ago. They fit a little tighter around my hips, but HEY that is OK, but of course I can't breath with them zipped. I am old. Wish I could say the same thing about my waist. I long for the 1930s suits when the top of the pants came halfway up the chest, nobody commented on the waist because it was totally hidden, sad the belly wasn't. (See "Oh Brother Where Art thou".) Old is not always good, it beats the alternative, but....

  6. Yes, it can be. It depends on the subject and how it's executed... Using my air rifles as an example, I am really impressed with people that can shoot targets at 100yards and the cluster of pellet holes can actually be called a 'group'...Me?..I would be happy to hit within a foot of what I was shooting at. I certainly would not be impressed, or even show interest, in anything corrupt or immoral, no matter how well it's done. ..

  12. One of my favorite questions that one of our circuit brothers loves to ask is “ What are You going to do?” I for one see two things of concern : Some of the friends have an interest in getting tattoos. And Some of the friends are harboring a little shade of prejudice in relation to those who have tattoos ( and other things about themselves which have become alien to them). In the first instance friends , do the research. Pray and think. 2. In the second instance : pray even harder our personal tastes , sense of style , and comfort zone should not become a reason that someone else will be stumbled or prevented from receiving the love and healing that Jehovah’s Organization provides.

  13. There are situations that I feel like it would be better for me to live under a tree in the forest. This is one of them! Since you rent, I’d eat beans for months, to save money to find a place that I would not have to tolerate this. That would be my prayer. Some things you cannot control. Some you can, like where you live. I would be so sick! Never mind your getting cancer from it. Second hand smoke is not filtered! I'm so sorry you are going through this. I will also pray about the matter...

  19. Gertrude got her first ambulance ride today. She had been doing better, actually quite well until last night, but we assumed she was just tired, so I took the opportunity to go back to Newport today to take care of things. I got to Albany, 5 hours out on a 6 hour drive, started at 5:30 AM, when Leslie called and said Mom had collapsed and she had called 911. I am 80 YO and too far along the drive to turn back. The last hour was one miserable drive. Leslie called and said they did a brain scan and all is OK in that department. Gertrude is totally conscous and was able to eat between tests. As I write she is in an ambulance heading back to Cherry Hill in Seattle (EMR was at Providence Hospital in Everett) for blood circulation tests. Four months, so far, I hope for the best and .... Thanks for prayers

  20. I would like to know if anyone knows how the Bethel family goes about the Daily Text... The way we go about ours is.... we read the text scripture, then read the commentary/extract and formulate questions from the extract. In as much as this way helps, sometimes it makes it seem like another question n answer session. So can u share with us how u go about yours? And if u know how the Bethel family does it too, u can brief us... may be with this information, we can all bebefit more fully from the Daily Text.

  22. How many of you live in a dwelling that is an apartment or a condo or even a townhouse and you smell out right 2nd hand smoke coming into your home? I know that a majority of my brothers don't own a home alone. In my hall we have several families that own their own houses separate from other homes by a couple of feet in-between. Others live side by side with smokers, and or above them or below. How do you all handle this situation? I've tried talking to the smoker for the past 7 years with no success. She knows I serve Jehovah, and its been one battle after another with her. She used to be conscious of the fact that I cannot tolerate the 2nd hand smoke. So for the past 7 years she has been smoking in her living room or kitchen. But this year, since July 5th, 2018, she has gone on a mad rampage! Since then, she has smoked up a storm. I know its against Jehovah she is on a rampage, but it affects me too. I have on a moderator's suggestion in here and got 2 big Hepa air filters, and I run these all day. These filters aren't cheap either. One alone (the air filters take 2) cost $20.00 a box). She persists and its getting worse. Would it be a bad for me to ask Jehovah and beg him to do something about the situation? My house reeks so bad, its like a bar with no windows, KI I know that BEA, couldn't even step one toe in my house! That's how bad it is in here and I have breathing problems. Can I ask for some of you to pray to Jehovah to intercede? Have her move out or anything to get her to stop that 24/7 smoking rampage. She has several demons living with her. I've got to get out of the den now, am suffocating in here. It's as bad or worse like the fires burning down our brothers homes in California! I know what you guys are going through big time!!!!

    Climate Change News

James, You made some "interesting" comments/conclusions/assumptions ... Let's see Yes, I believe that dinosaurs once existed and that they are now extinct. However, "due to a mass extinction event" .... that I am not so sure about. There are many species that once existed that have become extinct but it does not take a mass extinction event to have this occur. It can happen over time through death of the species or even by mankind overkilling or in some other way removing that species - it does not take a "mass event" for a species to become extinct. I tend to lean more toward the idea that Jehovah created the dinosaurs for a specific purpose. When that purpose was accomplished, He either allowed them do die off or He removed them from the earth. Yes, there have been changes in the earth due to mankind's misuse of the planet and not following Jehovah's guideline. Not only has the physical planet been compromised, so has the moral and social standing of the planet. However, we fully understand that the only cure for mankind's social, moral and health condition is Jehovah's Kingdom - this is why we do not get involved in political movements and the like - instead, we proclaim the Kingdom. .... The same holds true of things like "climate change". This is another thing we need to leave in Jehovah's hands while we proclaim the Kingdom - just like political and social causes, we DO NOT get involved in "movements to solve the problem". To make a statement that, anyone who does not agree with your point of view (or, as you phrased it, "deny such basic science and overwhelming evidence") must watch/listen to a certain news outlet is a bit of a stretch. Perhaps those who see the situation differently are relying on Jehovah's Kingdom - not listening to a news outlet you have decided does not cover the topics to your personal taste.

    Ancestory Dot Com

The previus thread on this has been closed, I expect many more have received interesting devlopements in their ancestrial lineage. Hear is what I received from my daughters today. Leslie received a hit from Ancestory.com from a cousin of one Ruby Dell Brown. This came up from DNA comparison on Ancestory.com. Ruby Dell Brown was my lost and almost forgotten mother. She passed away in 2005 and of all places in Everette Washington a few blocks from where my other daughter Jerri Lauson lived. Jerri says she even worked that territory. My father would never discuss his first marriage, even forgetting that his wife Maryjean was not my birth mother. In our family it was pretty much that we did not speak until spoken to, and never ask a personal question. My Grandmother was a little more charitable on that topic, even telling me I had been in Ruby's presence on more than one occasion in Eureka. I had been adopted as an infant by my Aunt Mabel, the one with the glasses. Upon the breakup of her family my real father asked for my return and he and his wife, now both JWs adopted me back. You may discern from the wedding photo that my mother is presenting a very large tummy. This marriage and photo were on October 14, 1938. I was born on October 27, 1938. I was in reality very premature and spent weeks in an incubator and then in special care for a couple of months. My mother did not wait around and I was abandoned as soon as she got out of the County Hospital. At that time my father could care less and was somewhere near Petrolia in Northern CA living a wild life. Th I don't really know if I would have contacted Ruby when I was a teenager, I was fearful of family repercussions were I to do so. Finding an identical match in our DNA has my girls all excited. They have emailed my cousin, much removed, and are waiting for an answer. From right to left: Barny Lytle, Ruby Brown Lytle (age 16), my aunt Lenore, Mabel Conley (at the time), and two of Mabel's friends whom I know but have forgotten the names. (It's coming back slowly, the one holding Mabel's arm was named Spray _ _ _, very slowly.) The wedding was in Curry County Oregon, California required a three day waiting period at that time, and likely parental consent. That is my Ancestory.com story, what is yours?

  36. Cutting my earning potential for the sake of the Kingdom : let me count the ways.1. Choosing a career path that is in high demand but a middling ( not an MD but an RN) earning potential to avoid spending excessive time in education . 2. Accepting being th sole income for my household so that my Wife could focus on pioneering and raising children.( No double income , significant increase me used in ministry). 3. Not climbing ladders but sticking with basic work duties and not switching jobs often. 4.Not furthering my education and this increasing my student debt so as not to cut into time for ministry and family. 5. Effectively choosing steady slow financial increase over big leaps to prevent distraction from the meetings and ministry. So, what is the result? After 32 years ( as a JW) and working at the same place for 18 years I am at the near top of my pay scale and seniority. I am almost debt free ( will be in less than seven years ) and within 3 years I’m eligible for a pension at age 52. So I’m not complaining.

  39. Despite having searched before I posted, I have missed a previous thread relating to this film. I'm not sure how to the in the threads but I think this commentary from @retroHelen gives us a good idea what to expect😕. I didn't realise the film had been out for so long. Maybe it's a new release in the uk. Either way, I won't be watching it, 😬 Well, be prepared for those who regard themselves as intellectual or sophisticated, who will be going to see this movie by a well known popular author and atheist Ian McEwan and then getting fired up against us by this twisted one-sided view of us depicted in this movie. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/emma-thompson-stanley-tucci-star-934573 It is based on Ian McEwan's book that was actually regarded by journalists at the time (2014) as an anti-religious rant with a 'clunky' heavy plot-line of a failing marriage on top of that to carry it into a novel rather than what could be summed up in ashort story - according to The Telegraph & The Guardian newspapers. 2014 The Children Act by Author Ian McEwan This is a 'middle/upper-class 'intellectual' atheist popular author whose book from 2014 is now to be made into a film starring English Actress Emma Thompson as the female High Court Judge and her husband played by Actor Stanley Tucci. A story about a woman supposedly a brilliant High Court Judge, married to her intellectual husband, living the 'high life' that such well paid 'intellectuals' can afford, yet suffering all the ups and downs of their troubled marriage and selfish outlooks. Then the Judge is called upon to intervene in a hospital case where an equally talented young Jehovah's Witness of 17, who along with his parents, is refusing a so-called life saving blood transfusion. She sees how talented he is as he quotes verbatum lots of old literary junk the World regards as clever and plays the violin, but is stuck with the ethical dilemma of whether to 'let him die' at his own wishes, or intervene as the hospital staff want him to. Quotations about the Author from various articles: "McEwan described the denial of medical help on religious grounds "utterly perverse and inhumane", according to the Telegraph, arguing that "the secular mind seems far superior in making reasonable judgments". "The novelist has long been suspicious of organised faith, sayng that he has "no patience whatsoever" with religion,, something that’s not been hard to detect since his 1997’s book Enduring Love, where a north London science writer’s agreeable domestic life is threatened by a religious stalker. (Christopher Hitchens once suggested that McEwan’s hostility to 'irrationalism' had “something of the zeal of the convert”) In The Children Act, however, his exasperation comes close to being damagingly shrill." "Before reaching the central plot, he limbers up with an Orthodox Jew who wants to deny his daughters a proper education, a Muslim who abducts his own child and a Catholic couple who would rather both their Siamese twins died than one be saved by surgery. Having put all of them right, Judge Fiona is then faced with Adam, a 17-year-old Jehovah’s Witness whose parents won’t allow a blood transfusion to treat his leukaemia. -the author's obvious desire to remind us of religion’s annoying persistence." "When the judge, Fiona, braves the “shabby tangle of London south of the river” to visit Adam in hospital, she finds a boy of impressive precociousness who, among much else, “could recite a long part of an ode by Horace”. Yet, while he initially sides with his parents, he’s no match for a brief touch of Fiona’s secularism. Once she’s ruled in favour of transfusion, he reacts with huge gratitude – and undisguised gobbets of the author’s message: “My parents’ religion was like a poison and you were the antidote… It was like a grown-up had come into a room full of kids.”” "In the end – especially given the choice of Jehovah’s Witnesses as the chief target – the feeling persists that McEwan’s considerable intellectual and literary fire-power is here being used for little more than shooting fish in a barrel." http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/books/bookreviews/11061406/The-Children-Act-by-Ian-McEwan-review-diminishing-returns.html https://www.theguardian.com/books/2014/apr/14/new-ian-mcewan-novel-the-children-act-religion One sided Prejudice and discrimination disguised as film plot. The man gets acclaim for his researched descriptions of lives of intellectuals, the workings of the courts and other 'clever' workplaces, yet it is obvious - because he dislikes religion so much - he does no research on the religions he is making broad sweeping biased statements about. Neither does he research the treatments and alternatives to transfusions that help with leukemia or the fact that Blood Transfusions may, in some cases, seem to alleviate symptoms, but is not a life-saving cure for the cause of the leukemia and in many cases may only give a few more weeks of life if the leukemia has really taken hold and may only prolong suffering if the leukemia is not able to be treated with other treatments as the immune system is suppressed by the foreign blood & treated like a foreign organ in the body.

  41. One can also think that governmental persecution has also taken place in the US, during the 30's and 40's. They used to tar and feather our brothers, when they refused to stop preaching, or when they refused to salute the flag. Jehovah gave them a hard head like he did Jeremiah. He is doing the same in Russia and now in Singapore. Wow. If he could do it then he can do it now.

  42. Two things I remember shows how fast BIG things can change overnight. During the "cold war" the mighty, supposed "King of the North" the Soviet Union fell overnight so to speak. That was just unheard of at the time and would have never crossed our mind. But there it was - changed to Russia. Then the second unheard of thing happened overnight. The Berlin Wall fell. At that time it was felt that it would be there "forever." Nope, it was gone. But one thing that didn't change was our own Watchtower Society. I appreciated Bro. Sanders talk since the first thing he talked about I remembered --- Bro. Rutherford's death and though I was really young and I didn't comprehend the full import of it but my parents were just coming in the truth and my mother was very upset and cried and cried. And like a little kid I wanted to know "why are you crying so much." Mom said that Bro. Rutherford died. She was distraught as to what we were going to do now! Being new in the truth, she was so afraid it would disappear now that Bro Rutherford was dead. The mature sister that studied with mom reassured her that things would just go on as they had been. She assured her that Jehovah was overseeing the work of the organization. So in hindsight the fact that Bro. Knorr was appointed worked out to be exactly what was needed to bring the organization into the modern age and look at us now. We're crying alright but it is with tears of joy. Thank You Jehovah and May Your Kingdom Come.

  45. What a wonderful reminder that ties in with the August Broadcast. Yes, we can ask Jehovah to help us personally, but we never want to forget the worldwide association of brothers. So many are sick and suffering spiritually, physically, mentally, and emotionally. We want to use their names in our prayers when possible. There is a list on jw. org with the names of brothers imprisoned and the GB asked us to pick a name and pray for that person specifically. We know friends locally. We never want to underestimate the power of prayer. Jehovah answers prayers!!

I have the privilege to work at the local Assembly Hall once a week and a simple breakfast is provided for all the workers, then at 8:30 a brother will conduct Morning Worship using the Daily Text just as you described. Different brothers are assigned each week so they are fully prepared to conduct. He will get a volunteer to read the scripture, then he will make a brief comment, then he will get a volunteer to read the commentary, then he will ask questions and get comments.
