Needles in strawberries
ChrisC and 11 others reacted to hatcheckgirl for a topic
In Queensland last week, a sewing needle was found in a strawberry punnet sold in supermarkets. Police are treating this as a disgruntled ex-worker's revenge. They recalled several brands of strawberries and that has left farmers in the lurch in the peak strawberry growing season. They are destroying and dumping all the fruit. The sweetest strawberries are now! Copy cat needles in strawberries were found in other cities, including Sydney. Now Adelaide has also had a sewing needle found in a punnet of strawberries which were grown in Western Australia. How very sickening to think people are so demented to injure others with needles in our food. Strawberries now, but what next? There is understandably a large reward offered. But with the copy-cat idiots, how does one stop this? http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-09-16/contaminated-strawberries-in-punnet-bought-in-adelaide-hills/1025352812 points -

Brother gave a good one in today’s talk: Some people may remember when a man fired a shot gun at an original Leonardo DaVinci painting. The museum didn’t simply throw the painting away now that it was ruined. Instead, the took the time to restore the painting! Likewise, we all have some form of shrapnel that damages us, many even many damaged spots. However, Jehovah doesn’t throw us away, but takes the time to put us back together.7 points -

As far as I know, no one in the congregations here was adversely affected. I was watching the awful effect that the hurricane had on New Bern and Wilmington NC, and in Myrtle Beach here in SC, and saw news reporters wading knee deep in the water in those cities. Last death count for the three states (including Virginia) that I heard was 14, and the displaced people are numbering over 1,000,000, mostly from the coastline. So far, locally we haven't experienced anything more than some rain. I am thankful to Jehovah. It is a blessing that we can go through the WT study online, listening to the recording. I remember how we used to have the cassette tapes, and had to request them beforehand.4 points -

Absolutely. The worrying thing is that the nature of the strawberry industry means they must still be picked, or the vines will stop producing. Farmers have no income to pay for pickers. Next year there won’t be many strawberries. So damaging to the industry. Apart from that, copy-cat needles are appearing in other states. What fruit is safe?3 points -

It started with using some white vinegar to remove some hard water deposits. So I went to YouTube to look up how vinegar was made. Ah, there are some links to "How to make wine". Hmmm, how is that done... oh, really, it is that easy... Been doing it for about 4 years. Tortuga... No, I don't crush grapes, only because I have not been able to get a source on wine grapes. So I have made Mead (honey wine), wine from Apple Juice, and I have bought just regular "store bought" Concord Grape juice. With the Concord Grape juice, I have figured out adding some other juices (I can tell you, it is a secret ) you can come up with some pretty good stuff. I have added malt to apple juice, and came up with a lower ABV "whiskey like" wine. The possibilities are endless.3 points

Hi Abigail, I'm not a moderator here, but I was just writing a Private Message to another member here who is also a limited access user to encourage her to post more. If you were a full access member you wouldn't need to wait to get your posts approved, and (as already mentioned) it would open your access to all the forums. You have to post more comments for that to happen. Perhaps you have an idea for a comment in the weekly Watchtower Study, the Bible reading, or the Congregation Bible Study. There are always topics for those, so post your comment there. Take some time to browse through the topics in the various forums that are available to you and see what appeals to you. Of course, at the moment you need to wait for your post to be approved before it appears. But eventually the moderators will get to know you through those posts, and will 'promote' you to a full access user. Several years ago I was in the same position as you. Eventually though, and very surprisingly to me, all of a sudden I was a full access user. It didn't take all that long either! We'd love to get to know you. So just reach out.2 points

My Bible has not held up well at all. I posted about the deteriorating condition a year and a half ago on this post: Some thought it was a mouse eating the cover but it is the high humidity in the Dominican Republic. The Bible I gave my wife also has the same problem. The Bibles are a lot worse now compared to the pictures. I don't have a recent picture at this time since my wife and I are visiting Southern California until mid October. When we visited Warwick last year I showed my Bible to the brothers at the front desk and they were shocked 😲 to see it in this condition. They suggested I send an email to the publishing department with pictures and letting them know how I use it. I never contacted them since I lost this departments email address. Hopefully the covers have been upgraded since the 2013 Bibles to withstand higher humidity climates like the Dominican Republic but I haven't noticed a difference. Have any of you? The Bible for Haitian Creole came out about 2 years ago but I haven't had the opportunity to see if they are doing any better.2 points -
Earthquakes In One Place After Another...

Now this is unusual. Magnitude 5.6 earthquake has hit the South Western Australian town of Walpole, about 430km south of Perth at around 1pm today. Apparently it was felt as far away as Perth, but not by me . Others close to the epicentre reported noise "like a huge underground explosion". Thankfully only minor damage to some homesteads as it is a very sparsely populated area. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-09-16/earth-tremor-rocks-southern-wa-town-of-walpole/102533642 points -

My father was a painter too (amateur), back in the 1950s and early 60s when I was a youngster. He used to paint things like this, copying a scene from a calendar or something, so I grew to like them. I recall the smell of the oil paints in the house, the paintings taking several days to dry thoroughly. But I know for certain he wasn't using HDR! There was no such thing as digital photography in those days, and even then I don't think I would have liked a photograph looking like a painting. This was the real thing! I have several of his paintings hanging on my walls.2 points -

Keto, IF and OMAD...
kejedo reacted to Stormswift for a topic
Hi all, Am just interested in those who have participated in the above and the results you've had on a personal level. (Those who have will know what the acronyms stand for haha). I've noticed that Leslie had a thread going for Keto recipes, I'll be looking at that in more detail later. But this is really about adjusting to the foods and the times you chose to eat. I was actually really skeptical about this, but being in a situation with my health that was going only one way - I've made the plunge and today was really excited when I got my blood results. Initially it started with the nurse being really concerned about my colestoral reading ... then I said, I expected that result and asked about my blood sugars, they have halved in a month! - and she said that would be the new medication we put you on, and when I told her I hadn't taken it at all - she was very impressed but still a little hmm whats the word? A little flumoxed about my lack of concern about the colestoral levels. What foods are getting best results for you if this is what you choose? I'm doing Keto (50-60% fat, 25% protein, 10-15% carbs with copious amounts of leafy and fibrous veges). Because I don't have a gallbladder I'm drinking a mix of Apple cider vinegar, ginger, lemon juice, tumeric and stevia to aid my digestion before i eat. Four days out of the seven I'm doing 23/1 IF - OMAD in other words - eating between 800-1100 cals a day Three days IF - six hour window of eating. Loving the swap from marg to butter ... i hated marg enjoying avos, coconut oil, olive oil and grapeseed oil. Quite close to the meditarranean diet isn't it? Looking forward to hearing others who are trying this. NOTE: This thread in no way elevates one lifestyle choice over another, nor is it to convey that this way is good for everyone, its not. It's down to personal choice as with everything ...and I do not want to present it as a must do for anyone.1 point -

I want to say that old cliché, familiarity breeds contempt, but that's not really accurate. I don't think you can have contempt for an inanimate object or event. I can understand the feeling of riding out a storm, or hurricane. It would be a judgment call, personal to an individual..with a lot of different factors to consider. With a storm comes a storm track. You have days of warnings and can get online and check out all the info for yourself. If I was single, had nothing to lose, didn't care about anything, I could see me riding one out, just for fun... Being dedicated to Jehovah, I don't have the choice to make. I already gave my life to Him, do I want to risk His property by thrillseeking?..Nope. With quakes, (pre dutch)you don't really know. It could be a little 5.0 wriggle, or it could blast half the state into rubble. Even with Dutch and his 80% or so accuracy rating, its not like watching something coming towards you like a storm. Plus, if you have lived in hurricane country you see them every year, maybe several times a year. That could give some folks a bit of confidence in their own judgment and in their own capabilities.1 point

I had one daughter take statistics in school. One of the things she learned is that statistics can be made to give the result you want Let me illustrate: 10 people are asked do you prefer item A or Item B? Here are their answers A B B B B A A A A A At first glance you would conclude that item A is the prefered item - after all, 6 out of 10 prefer item A However, these same results can also be used to show that 4 out of 5 prefer item B So, it doesn't really matter what the actual result may be, a clever person can get the result they predicted/wanted/theorized/guessed/aimed for1 point

New World Explorer reacted to Stormswift for a topic
Agreed!!! It's so frustrating. I've got to the point that I eat anything that is natural and not processed in my main diet - anything else is a rare treat. So natural sugars in small amounts. So stuff that are disguised as 'food' is off my menu ... and food that encourages my digestion naturally is on my menu. Processed 'food' cuts down on the digestion process your body undergoes, thereby using less calories to digest it. Nice to see you posting again Greg KNEW our donuts were better!1 point -
