  1. A 36 year old ELDER, with a seriously rock solid theo family background, beautiful wife, happy marriage, new home, trips around the world, very active in every way,... just took his own life and no one understands why. There were no red flags, no known depression, no clues. We are related. I'm used to feeling sorry for myself, having a sub-standard life with non-believers BUT, in terms of pain, what pain could ever compare to this scenario?? A brother commented tonight "We may see more of this..." A reference to the times we live in. It is terrifying to watch a "stable" one fall. May Jehovah help us all. PLEASE, pray for our elders, we need them, each and every one of them.

  4. Wow! Seems like horrible things just keep happening. Train crew taken to hospital with minor injuries. Thank goodness for that. Sorry for cntinuing to share sad negative news but: this news article says death toll has reached 17. https://www.upmatters.com/news/national/swollen-rivers-near-record-levels-as-florence/1452399342 WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) - With Wilmington cut off from the rest of North Carolina by still-rising floodwaters from Florence, officials plan to airlift food and water to the city of nearly 120,000 people as rescuers elsewhere pull inland residents from homes swamped by swollen rivers. The deadly storm was still dumping rain and had top winds around 30 mph (50 kph) early Monday, but forecasters said it was expected to gradually pick up forward speed and complete a big turn toward the Northeast. Flooding worries were increasing in West Virginia and Virginia, where power outages also were on the rise. About 500,000 homes and businesses were in the dark. The spreading disaster claimed additional lives Sunday, with at least 17 people confirmed dead, and the nation's top emergency official said other states were in the path this week. "Not only are you going to see more impact across North Carolina ... but we're also anticipating you are about to see a lot of damage going through West Virginia, all the way up to Ohio as the system exits out," Brock Long of the Federal Emergency Management Agency said Sunday on Fox News. Authorities near Charlotte were searching for a 1-year-old boy who was swept away by floodwaters when the boy's mother lost her grip on him after her vehicle was swept off a road. In Wilmington , the state's eighth-largest city, residents waited for hours outside stores and restaurants for basic necessities like water. Police guarded the door of one store, and only 10 people were allowed inside at a time. County commission chairman Woody White said officials were planning for food and water to be flown into the coastal city. "Our roads are flooded," he said. "There is no access to Wilmington." About 70 miles (115 kilometers) away from the coast, residents near the Lumber River stepped from their homes directly into boats floating in their front yards; river forecasts showed the scene could be repeated in towns as far as 250 miles inland as waters rise for days. In Anson County, east of Charlotte, a train derailed on Sunday evening, but it wasn't clear whether it was storm-related or if anyone was injured. Several cars of a CSX train left the tracks, WBTV reported. The derailment led to at least one road closure. Officials have reported flooding caused by Tropical Storm Florence in Union County, located between Charlotte and Anson County. Florence was still massive, despite being downgraded to a tropical depression from a once-fearsome Category 4 hurricane. Radar showed parts of the sprawling storm over six states, with North and South Carolina in the bull's-eye. Meanwhile, halfway around the world, Typhoon Mangkhut barreled into southern China on Sunday after lashing the Philippines with strong winds and heavy rain that left dozens dead. More than 2.4 million people were evacuated from China's southern Guangdong province ahead of the massive typhoon, the strongest to hit the region in nearly two decades. In North Carolina, fears of what could be the worst flooding in the state's history led officials to order tens of thousands to evacuate, though it wasn't clear how many had fled or even could. President Donald Trump said federal emergency workers, first responders and law enforcement officials were "working really hard." As the storm "begins to finally recede, they will kick into an even higher gear." "Very Professional!" he declared in a tweet. The storm's death toll climbed to 17 as authorities said a 3-month-old child was killed when a tree fell on a mobile home in North Carolina. Three people died in weather-related traffic accidents, officials said.

  5. I read this surprisingly positive article in the newspaper today about the Manzanares river that flows through Madrid. The article is in Spanish: https://elpais.com/ccaa/2018/09/14/madrid/1536928384_530297.html But there are several nice pictures here: https://elpais.com/elpais/2018/09/14/album/1536939042_765087.html Since I have memory, I remember the Manzanares, the river that passes through Madrid, as a dirty and stinking narrow stream of stagnant water, polluted due to sewage and a breeding ground for mosquitoes. A few years ago the city of Madrid undertook the pharaonic work of moving underground the M30, a very busy freeway that encircles the city center parallel to the river. Then, they built a nice park by the river instead of the freeway. Some years later, in 2015, a project was undertaken to open all the dams and let the river loose. Three years later, not even the ecologists who presented the project can believe the amount of fauna and flora that thrives in and around the river. Lots of local species of plants, fish and birds that have turned this once polluted river into a beautiful natural environment. All of that without any human intervention other than opening the dams and letting nature do its job. The pictures are really nice, I didn't expect so see something like that in the center of Madrid. This shows once again how Jehovah designed nature to repair itself as soon as man stops messing with it. This has helped me visualize how quickly the earth will become a paradise when people in Satan's system stop ruining it.

  9. Reminds me of the tower in Siloam that fell killing 18 people. Luke 13:4-5 An article about making Jehovah your confidence referenced that example that Jesus gave, because he asked if those 18 were more guilty than any other man in Jerusalem? He said, No, I tell you, but unless you repent you will be destroyed in that same way. The article made the point that just because someone suffers from a natural disaster, that it should not be concluded that God is causing this kind of suffering. A timely reminder for us in the affected US states. https://wol.jw.org/en/wol/d/r1/lp-e/2003642?q=tower+fell&p=par#h=11 It came to mind because I read that they are saying that they found the apparently related Pool of Siloam where the man born blind was cured. https://www.bibleplaces.com/poolofsiloam/ https://www.biblicalarchaeology.org/daily/biblical-sites-places/biblical-archaeology-sites/the-siloam-pool-where-jesus-healed-the-blind-man/

Here is the first president of the Watchtower Society, William Henry Conley. *** jv chap. 26 p. 576 Producing Bible Literature for Use in the Ministry *** The following year the first of an extensive series of tracts designed to interest people in Bible truths was prepared for publication. This work quickly took on immense proportions. In order to handle it, Zion’s Watch Tower Tract Society was formed on February 16, 1881, with W. H. Conley as president and C. T. Russell as secretary and treasurer.

  14. Hi Abigail, I'm not a moderator here, but I was just writing a Private Message to another member here who is also a limited access user to encourage her to post more. If you were a full access member you wouldn't need to wait to get your posts approved, and (as already mentioned) it would open your access to all the forums. You have to post more comments for that to happen. Perhaps you have an idea for a comment in the weekly Watchtower Study, the Bible reading, or the Congregation Bible Study. There are always topics for those, so post your comment there. Take some time to browse through the topics in the various forums that are available to you and see what appeals to you. Of course, at the moment you need to wait for your post to be approved before it appears. But eventually the moderators will get to know you through those posts, and will 'promote' you to a full access user. Several years ago I was in the same position as you. Eventually though, and very surprisingly to me, all of a sudden I was a full access user. It didn't take all that long either! We'd love to get to know you. So just reach out.

    Typhoon in Asia

Here in Malaysia where we have never experienced a typhoon (Asia's equivalent of hurricane) I feel so scared looking at what is happening in Philippines, Hong Kong and Southern China. I have read that Philippines have more than 20 typhoons a year, 5 of which are destructive. I have been to Manila and have seen a family with young children sleeping in front of shophouses. The parents would pull out a double mattress for the whole family to sleep on, with no defences to protect them from the elements. One who imagine what happens to such families when a typhoon hits that sprawling metropolis. The realities would be too horrendous to contemplate. It is an image that still haunts me after all these years and I'm truly grateful for having a house to stay in. A lot of people do not even have that luxury, sleeping on 5 foot way or under the bridge (shudder) Sorry I didn't even know the correct spelling for swathe! Earthquake in the island of Lombok, Indonesia Last Friday, I was robbed while walking from the bus stop to my house, 400 m away. I was so traumatised by the incident, even though it is the 4th time I have been a victim of snatch thieves. But all this pales in significance to the suffering that others suffered during natural diasasters. Unless one personally experienced the tragedy, it is hard to imagine the horrors and fright that stays with them for the rest of their lives. I got my first experience of a earthquake while on holiday alone in Brastagi, Indonesia. One local sister invited me to stay one night in her wooden house. While out buying steamed corn on the roadside, the ground started shaking violently. I was shaken to the core. Still I had the presence of mind to tell the lady that I wanted to cancel my order. Truly, a earth shattering experience. (Malaysia does not lie in that Pacific Ring of Fire) Fearful events are happening as the end draws near. Yes, a sign of the times. Let us cleave closer to Jehovah, our Grand creator and to each other. May we be a source of comfort and support to each other during these trying times. (Actually, the reason I replied to your post was because I haven't commented for a while now and I was warned I might be bumped off this site for being inactive. Now I seem to have overstayed my welcome on this thread. So don't indulge me by answering. Thank you for taking the time to reply. It meant a lot to me.😍 Glad to know the tropical depression decided to bypass Maryland. Thanks be to God for small mercies. Warm regards and stay strong. Anne

I well remember when Brother Knowles was becoming a JW and he was so well known it was on all the TV channels' news in 1969. He was filmed actually going off the pitch and leaving a big game to attend a meeting - A substitute was brought on to fill in for him, but he left the soccer scene completely after that televised episode.

  21. Tuesday, September 18 Sexual immorality is reported among you, and such immorality as is not even found among the nations.—1 Cor. 5:1. We can contribute to the spiritual cleanness of the congregation by following the direction found in God’s Word. Consider the situation in ancient Corinth. Paul had poured himself out preaching in that city, and he loved his fellow “holy ones” there. (1 Cor. 1:1, 2) But how troubling it must have been for him to have to address the problem of sexual immorality that was being tolerated in that congregation! Paul directed the elders to hand the immoral man over to Satan—in other words, to disfellowship him. To preserve the congregation’s purity, the elders needed to clear out the “leaven.” (1 Cor. 5:5-7, 12) When we support the elders’ decision to disfellowship an unrepentant wrongdoer, we help to maintain the cleanness of the congregation and perhaps move the person to repent and seek Jehovah’s forgiveness. w16.11 2:14

  23. I don't do Facebook. But Michael Janitch/Dutchsinse has mentioned in past videos that he used to be in a heavy metal band. He has never mentioned in his earthquake forecasts HOW he came to believe in God, he has just hinted that he now believes in a Creator and the Bible's account of creation. He has other non-earthquake videos that may explain why and what he believes, but I have never viewed any of them. I think his mailing address is listed at the bottom of his official website, if someone wants to send him some tracts or something.

  43. Has anyone heard of a devotional called "Rhapsody of Realities"? In doing some research to my last question I came upon it here: List of literary works by number of translations - September 25th 2017 Revision. It says that their website has been translated into 837 languages. However, when you actually go to the website and click the "Translate" button, it says there are "101 languages". Then, on their "Other 900 Languages" page there are listed 651 languages for their devotional. According to it's publisher's Wikipedia page it says: However, the page reads as an advertisement for their church: So I am doubtful as to it's authenticity. That in addition to the fact that I cannot find a single external source referring to the translation work of this group. Anyone heard of this?

  44. The rate is slowing to about 3 languages added each month. However, from January 2019 there are no more Simplified Watchtower editions, so this may make translation more efficient, especially as the regular 2019 study editions will use simpler language and design. This may improve speed of translation, so 1000 languages by the end of 2019 is most likely.
    1 point
  45. Possibly. 51 languages were added in the last service year.

  47. We had a wonderful illustration for why Jehovah did not eliminate Satan and Adam and Eve the day they sinned. Two men owned race horses. Bob saiys 'my horse is faster than your horse.' Jim says, 'my horse is faster than your horse.' They exchanged arguments about the horses for a while Then Jim whipped out a gun and shot Bob's horse, then says, 'my horse is faster than your horse.' But did that prove anything? Of course not. An other good one is, Jehovah placed a tree in a vacant area. The tree represented true religion. Satan cannot touch or alter Jehovah's tree, but he planted a million trees all around Jehovah's tree. That makes it very difficult to find Jehovah's tree, although it it still there, where it always was. If we search for the truth, we will find it.
