Culture and our brain

http://www.abc.net.au/news/science/2018-08-17/culture-may-affect-the-way-your-brain-processes-everything/10120068 In the West, we have an individualist culture, one where broadly speaking the “focus is on an independent and unique self that values autonomy, personal achievement and an analytical style of thinking. This is known as individualism.” “There's also a different kind of self-representation known as collectivism — and this cultural framework is more common in non-Western cultures, including populations from East Asian, African, and Middle Eastern countries.” This article is interesting in that it explores just how limited modern psychology really is, especially in multicultural societies. Because our culture affects how our brain processes things happening to us, and how different are our lives in the West with those, from say, Afghanistan? “Our current understanding of human psychology may be limited by the fact that most research studies involve participants that represent a very narrow slice of humanity.” We are the WEIRD ones: W estern E ducated I ndustrialised R ich D emocratic How our brains work is just so fascinating, and it’s so amazing how Jehovah knows how our culture affects how we see things. He brings us all into one unified way of worship, a new culture so to speak, which is so superior to how psychologists and others have formulated theories on how to manage mental health.6 points -

I live near this attraction. It is to scale more or less but is otherwise built with a high degree of artistic liscence. The people I’ve talked to have said it was interesting but had some very speculative features and was fairly expensive. I , for one, will go see it when and if we have to remove or revise it in the new system. I’d rather spend my money on something that furthers the kingdom or my development as Jehovah’s servant. I do recommend the Met tours in NYC.4 points -
I think it is harder to be a JW in the West with all the pervasive political and philosophical ideas around you. Individualism, postmodernism, rationalism, postgenderism, feminism, transgenderim, homosexuality, liberalism, capitalism, consumerism come to my mind right away. If you research these big ideas, you will understand that most, if not all, of them are incompatible with Christianity. In my view, it is easier for JWs in the East, because we are largely still living in traditional societies, but things are slowly changing of course for the worse. Traditional values of collectivism, family, traditional gender roles, chastity, modesty, simplicity etc are all eroding.4 points

Good points, thanks Lucy for your post. While there can be some benefits to psychology if it agrees with the wisdom of the Bible, I believe that modern psychology receives too much credit and acclaim despite it's shortcomings and failures. A good way to view modern psychology is the way this article is suggesting, that it is very "limited". No wonder Jehovah did not go into details about psychological factors such as how culture effects our brain. He simply gave commands to help us remain separate from the "world" and to avoid certain philosophies and traditions. Jehovah is a great Father.3 points -

We have had a lot of rain recently. And now last night it got down below freezing so our parking lot at the Kingdom Hall is a skating rink. We have a row of trees on the south side of the parking lot that prevents the Sun from doing much thawing so our meeting was called off this morning due to Black Ice.2 points -

How long do you sleep?
hatcheckgirl and one other reacted to daydream for a topic
The wonder of sleep. Sleep helps your brain work properly. While you're sleeping, your brain is preparing for the next day. It's forming new pathways to help you learn and remember information. Studies show that a good night's sleep improves learning. Whether you're learning math, how to play the piano, how to perfect your golf swing, or how to drive a car, sleep helps enhance your learning and problem-solving skills. Sleep also helps you pay attention, make decisions, and be creative. Studies also show that sleep deficiency alters activity in some parts of the brain. If you're sleep deficient, you may have trouble making decisions, solving problems, controlling your emotions and behavior, and coping with change. Sleep deficiency also has been linked to depression, suicide, and risk-taking behavior. Physical Health Sleep plays an important role in your physical health. For example, sleep is involved in healing and repair of your heart and blood vessels. Ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. Sleep deficiency also increases the risk of obesity. For example, one study of teenagers showed that with each hour of sleep lost, the odds of becoming obese went up. Sleep deficiency increases the risk of obesity in other age groups as well. Sleep helps maintain a healthy balance of the hormones that make you feel hungry (ghrelin) or full (leptin). When you don't get enough sleep, your level of ghrelin goes up and your level of leptin goes down. This makes you feel hungrier than when you're well-rested. Sleep also affects how your body reacts to insulin, the hormone that controls your blood glucose level. Sleep deficiency results in a higher than normal blood sugar level, which may increase your risk for diabetes. Sleep also supports healthy growth and development. Deep sleep triggers the body to release the hormone that promotes normal growth in children and teens. This hormone also boosts muscle mass and helps repair cells and tissues in children, teens, and adults. Sleep also plays a role in puberty and fertility. Your immune system relies on sleep to stay healthy. Ongoing sleep deficiency can change the way in which your immune system responds. For example, if you're sleep deficient, you may have trouble fighting common infections. So stay healthy, folks and sleep well. My late brother suffered from 4th stage lung cancer and could not lie down to sleep at night and now his long suffering wife is suffering from dementia. A frightening disease that takes away one's past and leaves only a shadow of a former vibrant personality. So please do not under estimate the value of a good night sleep. Your brain as well as your whole body will thank you for that. Sleep away but not too much though.2 points -

Well, in spite of the inclement weather and treacherous road conditions, we had our LDC meeting tonight. I cannot believe our remodel project is scheduled to take TWELVE WEEKS!!! The changes are apparently going to be a lot more extensive than were originally slated a few years ago. Our remodel project got put on a back-burner because of all the natural disasters and the need for brothers and sisters who didn't have any hall at all. Exciting times ahead for our Munising, Michigan congregation.2 points -

I just wanted to share what one of my students asked me yesterday. I teach English language in University to first years (18/19 year olds) ... anyway we were studying a video that I had on my laptop. On the cover I have a JW.ORG sticker. So during the break one girl came up and asked "Is that the Jehovah website" pointing to the sticker. I said "Yes, do you know it?" She said, no but that she had seen it on the stands in the street. I couldn't really preach as French schools are very strict about things like that, but I did say "You should check it out, it's very interesting". I found this encouraging because it shows that when we're public witnessing, we don't really see who takes notice or not, but this young girl not only remembered the logo but knew it "belonged" to Jehovah. Made me smile.1 point

Yes you never really know who is looking and who is not, just shows how important that we make sure we always are at our post, because people see us everyday and it just takes one time to see something that interests them and then they come over and look, but if we miss our chance at being out there we miss the chance of making a witness Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk1 point

Heads of State, as individuals, cannot know everything going on within their administrations. Thus, they have little choice but to rely on 'advisors '. We often read that 'So-and-So is close to the President, a trusted advisor '. What's happening in Russia reminds me of the account in Esther. The scheming Haman the Agagite advised King Ahasuerus to issue a royal, irrevocable, decree for the purpose of annihilating the Jews. Imagine someone in Russia explaining to Putin what was happening to JW's on his watch. Would Putin say "Huh? What?" . When evil Haman's scheme was revealed, King Ahasuerus said to Queen Esther "You may now write in the King's name whatever you see fit in behalf of the Jews". The king granted permission to the Jews to defend their lives. The text of the document was to be ISSUED AS LAW. It's a thrilling account of Jehovah's wisdom and authority over human rulers and powerful advisors. Jehovah has allowed this persecution in Russia to proceed, but he knows how the story will end.1 point
