There are some free courses on:
Khan Academy (Computer Courses)
CodeAcademy is also another which offers some but most are paid courses.
Javascript (JS) is a great first language to get into, once you know this one, you can pretty much pick up most other languages out there. Also, JS allows you to code for front-end , back-end , mobile and IoT devices.
As you stated you are a verbal learner, then YouTube would probably be best but as you mentioned, being tech savvy person does not mean you are a good teacher. I would say you are going to have to do a lot of reading and testing and trial and error on your own, even if you get a great personal tutor to teach you, things get outdated quick in the dev world and some frameworks/libraries which you will be using will be no longer used. So, you are going to have to learn, learn learn and test test test. Again, if you know "Vanilla JS" which is Javascript without any framework/library, things become a lot easier to pick up when you test try different frameworks (AngularJS, Vue.js, etc)
Finding work...
Currently, I work 2 days out of the week and I am full time pioneering, I can tell you that most of my work comes from referrals and Jehovah lining things around , I also occasionally use WeWorkRemotely, StackOverFlow, CraigsList. A lot of leads and people who send referrals have come from those sites after establishing good secular work relationships.
WeWorkRemotely also has other jobs not related to programming and its all 100% remote. I have found I cannot take most of the jobs because they require full-time commitment (traps!) and that conflicts with my pioneering.
I hope you do find something that works with your goals 👍
