  1. In the news it's saying that Whole foods is now lowering prices, so it seems like the acquisition may turn out to be a good thing
  2. That's true, but the goal with other ones is to develop pesticide resistance allowing the farmers to freely spray without worrying about harming crops. For example, check out Monsanto's roundup ready product line, and Monsanto is the largest seed supplier in the world.
  3. Terrible is a subjective term, but anyway although I agree with some of the stuff, I'm going to have to disagree with a few things here. This info is based off school research projects I have done. Fish is generally good for you, however, if you have to much it can be harmful. For example if you had tuna every day within a year or two the mercury levels in your body would be above safe limits. If you continues consuming a tuna sandwich each day it would inevitably lead to mercury poisoning. But even if you're not a tuna fanatic, elevated levels of mercury over time could lead to health issues. Of course the exact timing would depend on body weight, amount consumed and other factors. Certain GMO crops are designed to withstand higher levels of pesticides than traditional crops, allowing farmers to spray stronger pesticides without the crops dying. Then gradually the weeds adapt to the pesticides becoming immune. Often the way to counter this is to put even more pesticides on the crops, then the weeds get stronger and the cycle continues. The result is increased pesticides on the produce without significant gains in production over time. Eat one GMO product and it will likely do almost no harm, but consume chemicals over a lifetime and who knows what kind of damage it could do. I'm speaking in generalisations here, the amount of pesticide and effects vary depending on the company and type of produce. For example, pineapples even if sprayed with a lot of pesticide contain almost none when you eat it because of the amount of skin removed before eating. For fatty foods it does depend on the type of fat. I once heard that the Maasai tribe live off only meat and some lived past 90 and therefore eating animal fat shouldn't cause increased cholesterol. Well I experimented with this and ate as much animal meat and fat as I wanted for about a year. When I took a blood test later my cholesterol level had significantly increased. Maybe the Maasai people bodies have adapted after generations of the diet, I am not sure, but if I continued with that died it probably would have lead to heart issues.
  4. Actually were having a music night next month and inviting some brothers and sisters over, one of the ideas is to come up with a song to submit to the society that could be used in a broadcast, should be fun
  5. Just a word of advice, learning an instrument takes a lot of time and sustained effort. There's an expression "don't try to boil the ocean", I think it really applies to music, it's best to focus your energy on one instrument until you become reasonably good at it before tackling other ones. I found that when I switched between instruments too much I ended up getting almost nowhere with any of them. It's very hard to practice at first but if you persist I think anyone can become good at an instrument. What music instrument do you play? My main instrument now is Guitar. I'm also mediocre at piano (ironically one of the only songs I know how to play well is Greensleeves), harmonica and drums. I used to be pretty good with clarinet back in high school. In the past I also played trombone, violin, accordion and flute but never progressed to far with any of those. How long have you played? Just over a year for guitar, I took piano lessons for about 5 years but didn't practice much. When I finally picked up a guitar I fell in love with it in a way I never have for other instruments. How/Where did did you learn to play? For guitar I used an application called yousician at the beginning, then I learned songs from tabs, books, youtube videos and tips from other musicians. Never took a formal lesson. For piano a neighbour who was a music teacher taught me once a week for an hour. Do you play for income or hobby. Right now it's a hobby, although I'm working on a CD and hoping to make some income from that in the near future. I've been paid for singing before though. Want to share a picture of/with your instrument? Sure. What Kingdom songs do you like to play? Pretty much all of the new kingdoms songs (from the last couple years), in the document released by the society (before the new song book) it contained alternate chords and the position of the capo making it ideal for guitarists. I tried learning kingdom songs on piano but they were way above my skill level. There are simplified versions but sounded much too plain for me. Do you sing vocal as well? No matter what room in the house it may be. Yes, the reason I picked up a guitar was actually to provide musical accompaniment for my singing (as my guitarist's availability at the time was unreliable) Perhaps you're waiting to the new system to play! What is your first instrument you want to learn then? I would like to become really good with piano but the time commitment is too much for me in this system it seems. Didgeridoo would also be fun.
  6. Agree with all except elbows on the table. It's pretty rare for guests to be sitting on either side of you in everyday life, unless you come from a huge family. But if you find yourself in that situation by all means remove them. And if someone gets offended over this they definitely need some loosening up
  7. Ah that's terrible, what a wicked world we live in I hope that the family will be reunited in paradise
  8. I generally use honey as a sweetener. If i'm drinking tea I'll either have it with honey, or just have it strait if none is available. Never with sugar. Probably as a consequence of me reading a very long list of the potential health problems associated with refined sugar a while back.
  9. I discovered this artist several months ago and thought I would share his music with y'all. He's definitely one of the best guitarists alive today and I'm looking forward to seeing him in concert. An example of his technical playing skill: Examples of his emotional playing: His technique is quite interesting. He plays with a thumb pick and usually plays his thumb independently of the other fingers. He also bangs his hand against his guitar for percussive sounds. He plays bass, rhythm and melody simultaneously so it sounds like there's three people playing at once. A technique he learned from Chet Atkins as a child. I'm trying to learn his technique and apply it to jazz playing, but still have a lot of work ahead of me...
  10. I was talking to a brother yesterday and somehow the conversation ended up with a story that relates to this question: He had a gathering at his house where alcohol was served, he had invited a bunch of brothers and sisters as well as his bible study and his father (i think he wanted to expose them to christian association). However, one of the brothers apparently went overboard with the drinking and started acting up to the point that he had to be restrained by the bible studies father. Needless to say, that was not a good witness... So I think it's important to know who you invite, have some kind of supervision and limit the alcohol served if you decide to do so.
  11. I would probably seek out some responsible brothers or couples to keep tabs on who's drinking and how much. With a gathering of that size, you should probably have some sort of attendants to keep an eye out for what's going on, and be available to have them report back to you. I would mention on the invitation that alcohol will be served. That gives people the chance to back out if they are not comfortable. I know people that refuse to drink alcohol for legitimate reasons, and it wouldn't be fair to put them in an atmosphere where they may feel pressured to partake. I also like the ticket idea, but I could also see that being abused, for example someone who doesn't drink gives their tickets away...
  12. It's clearly a joke so I'd knock anyway. Probably disregard the sign unless the householder brought it up. Or ask what prompted them to put it up and go from there...
  13. How can someone be so irresponsible with money when they have people depending on them? It's a real shame of a story. At the same time, there were red flags. If the person you're planning to marry isn't allowed to get married in a kingdom hall, maybe marrying them isn't the best idea... And judging by his age, it doesn't seem like they spent a lot of time getting to know each other before deciding to marry. He clearly had a deadly case of materialism. Just more evidence that it's best to follow bible principles, Jehovah knows best.
