Best App to use for Android phones to listen to books and publications I download from JW. Org website in mp3 format?

Recommended Posts

Friends I need some help. I have a really busy schedule between pioneering and family obligations and sometimes I fall behind with my personal studies. I find that for me listening to audio books and publications helps me to keep pace with all the spiritual food we have available to us. Can someone recommend to me the best App to download from play store for android phones so that I can listen to books and publications from JW. Org website? There may already be a thread on this topic if so can someone tell me where I can find it? Also is this an easy straightforward process of just going to JW. ORG website and searching for book or publication I want to download and just click on mp3 format and transfer files to App? Thanks for any help you can provide me. I just feel like I'm not keeping up with my personal studies the way I would like to and I find that listening to audio is a good method for me personally to keep up with my personal studies when I have a busy and full schedule. Thanks...

Wow, that was easy enough Sis. Carole. That goes to show you how much I'm keeping pace with technology.  Brain Fog again...I need to take some time and explore all the features throughout JW Library app. Yesterday I paraphrased a scripture to my wife and told her I couldn't remember where it was located and she pulled out her smart phone and opened up JW Library app and then opened the Bible and then typed in the word "thoughts" and a list of scriptures popped up with the scripture I had paraphrased. I asked her "how did you find that scripture so fast!" <sighed> felt so technology clueless at that moment. :shrugs:

If they are downloaded to the app you can listen anywhere, just like playing a video.

I thought that as well until I tried it. Not working offline as it pulls the media from the website.. maybe on Apple but not on Android

I like the Podcast option because it's all in one place.. i just need to refresh once a month and it immediately makes all new mags available and downloadable by article

On your android unit you can download and take them offline with you.  If you are just hitting the "play" button it doesn't download.  You also have to have enough memory (ram) to store the downloaded files.

Maybe you could demonstrate how - I just downloaded a bunch of mags and I can certainly hit the play button, but it is in streaming mode which means it streams the audio from the website when I am connected to the Internet. As soon as I go offline the play button disappears (I tested it on my iPad too just to make sure I am not going senile - on Apple the play button does not disappear but it doesn't play either when offline).  I know I can download videos and watch them offline but when downloading mags it does not download the audio. I have plenty of space on my phone, too :-)

Are you downloading these files from the JW Library app (purple square) or just downloading a file from JW.Org under "publications"?

From the JW Library app.

I see on jw.org the option to download magazines in mp3 format. On many Android devices there is an imbedded music player. I am not familiar with Apple devices, but you probably also can play mp3s. In the library app, you must be online.:)

I see now. The reason I can still listen on my Android (it's a 'phablet'= phone/ tablet) is that even if I turn off wifi I can stream over data.

It's a setting you can activate in iOS by going to Settings > JW Library > Streaming and Downloading.

I have yet to see where an audio file can be downloaded for offline use in the Jwlibrary App. Can you post a screen shot of this.

Note: not how to stream - as that is ON Line use.

I still use JWReader - even though the text no longer works.

On my Android tablet, I downloaded the magazine in MP3 format from JW.ORG and then just played it with my Android music player (stock).  The magazine showed up as recently added.  I am sure you can make a playlist if that is important.  I disabled my wifi internet connection just to make sure it is playing from the tablet memory and not streaming.  I used to copy several songs for burning to a CD (on my home PC).  I copied all of these albums to my Android and they show in my Music list as well.

Note: this is JW.ORG not the JW App.

The post was in response to how to stream over data. There are other, more specialised, apps for downloading files to play offline, such as VLC.

This was the original question

Yes but you can't listen to them offline from the jw app. I use castbox to download the podcasts from jw.org with one click rather than downloading the mp3 files from the website separately.

Later this comment was added about doing this off-line.

VLC is ok for playing, but not for organizing and easily playing audio files. You would have to create all your own folders and download the files in the right places. It's not a good "tool" for that.

You're right. I answered a later question. And vlc is a good tool for many things, but probably not the best one for that, although you can do it, just one I had tried and had on my device.

I used JWReader for a long time,  starting before we had our Library App...I have drifted away from its use,  didn't even know about the text issue.

I  used it to listen to the Watchtower study article,  mostly. It helped me with pronunciation and timing when I was the study reader..as I remember,  it worked fine offline. ..

Does your tablet have a sim card and use LTE or 3G data? Put it into flight mode and try again. Sometimes, when you already started the stream it will still play for a while after turning off data. But you can't download a bunch of mags and hope to play the audio later.

I presumed brother Manny wanted to listen to it offline because he used the word "download" :)

edit: just noticed you were using jw.org.

Try the podcast player once in a while, it really is easier.
