Larry Graham Life Story in Awake

Recommended Posts

Does anyone remember reading in the past or present, the life story of the musician Larry Graham, from Sly and the Family Stone in the 1960's? (Not the main person known as Sly) He also had his own group in the 1970's called Graham Central Station.  I give some details of his life story in this post.

His life story appeared in February 1989 in the Awake and can now be looked up not only in bound volumes and on the CD-ROM, but also the Watchtower Online Library.  The title of the story is:  I Found One In a Million: as told by Larry Graham.

Later after coming into the truth, he started doing music on a limited basis and he along with his wife sold their very large home and expensive cars for a smaller home and less cars so that they could pioneer, brother Graham also became an elder. I won't tell the rest of the story for those of you who haven't read it.

"In Brooklyn, New York, we visited the international headquarters of Jehovah’s Witnesses. We were outlandishly dressed, wearing black matching outfits with glittering red and silver dragons on the trouser legs and on the backs of our jackets, which still embarrasses us when we think about it. But we were kindly treated, and no one made remarks about our dress." --- g89 2/22 p.15

I was serving at Brooklyn Bethel the day they visited. It was lunch time and they had been invited to join the Bethel family for lunch in the main dining room. We were all assembled and waiting for one of the Governing Body to ask us to join in giving thanks, when they conspicuously walked in and all heads were turned. I remember the men quickly taking their hats off, and noticed their large afros and outlandish outfits. You could have heard a pin drop. After they finally made it to their seats, the chairman began with the prayer, and a brother at our table told us who they were, specifically Larry Graham.

It was right up there with the day Katherine Jackson toured the factory buildings with Michael and Janet, and some of the young brothers tried to get Michael's autograph. It kind of shocked and disappointed Michael who was overheard saying to his mother, "I thought Jehovah's Witnesses were supposed to be different."

I sure do!  Nice article, I remember also. He and his band were the on-board entertainment for the "Bible-Lands Mediterranean Cruise" I took in 1996. Lovely couple! Didn't he take Prince under his wings when he was studying?

When I was young I read it many many many times. I was actually a big fan of his solo work. My favorite is Just Be My Lady (which I just discovered is misplaced 😬😬). The hours I spent as an 8 year old listening to that album. I knew it by heart. There was a brother in our area that looked and sang exactly like him. It was uncanny.

Bro. Graham also gave a marvelous talk, "Stand Still and See the Salvation of Jehovah!" It under JwProclaimers on YouTube!

Why would he put his talks on YouTube? And why would anybody use YouTube as a source for such talks?

An elder in our congregation is Larry Graham cousin and he is one of the reasons why Larry Graham eventually become a Witness.

Our speaker today is an old friend of his that had been in Larry Graham band before he or Larry started studying. We were in the same breakout room and he was telling us some stories about Larry Graham and Prince.

It was a pretty interesting conversation..🤣

Hershall "Happiness" Kennedy was at our meeting again tonight. I didn't have a chance to talk to him so I don't know why he decided to pop in. It was nice to see again. 👍
