Keeping outdoor cats/dogs in the yard

I recently lost one of my cats and now we have 3 and I'm trying to find some ideas on ways to keep the cats from wanting to go near the road. We have lung problems so they can't all be inside ALL the time as the fur/dander can easily become a problem. I let them in at various times and some nights in a cage, but a couple of them meow alot if theyre kept in a cage....

 

Any ideas on keeping them away from the road? We have a really long front yard and a good sized backyard in the yard, lots of fields and some neighbors. I'm looking into deterrant sprays and powders to put around property borders but was wandering if any of you have any tips?

Cats will be cats and my experience has been that only way to keep them safe is to keep them in the house. If you can't do that, you may have to get an outdoor dog!

Just wanted to say I hope you and your hubby are doing fine in your new

housing...I know it takes time to adjust to new surroundings.

 

I agree with you about cats...they do much better indoors.

The sprays may exacerbate the lung issues. ..my wife and the Sister next door both have to be very careful about what they inhale. 

My wife is badly asthmatic and Janice next door has chemical sensitivity to many things.
