Catholics, keep your wallets closed until the Church reforms from the Vatican on down

I'm a life-long Catholic furious about the corruption, crimes, and cover-ups of the church's leaders. It's past time to purge their ranks.

It is hard to be a Catholic today. It is clear from this summer's Pennsylvania grand jury report, the Cardinal Theodore McCarrick scandal and, most recently, the dodgeby Pope Francis to a Vatican diplomat's testimony that the pontiff rehabilitated McCarrick, that the Catholic Church has been betrayed by her leaders.

Ryan, lawmakers call on Catholic Church leaders to come clean

http://thehill.com/homenews/house/406583-ryan-lawmakers-call-on-catholic-church-leaders-to-come-clean

Catholic lawmakers on Thursday called on church leaders to come clean in the sex-abuse scandal rocking the Vatican.
"This is very disturbing ..." said Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), who like Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is Catholic.
But he warned against those trying to politicize the scandal: "As a practicing Catholic, the last thing that this needs to be is become relegated to a fight between the Catholic left and the Catholic right. This needs to be elevated to truth and justice.
"That means cleanse the problem with total transparency and total accountability so that the healing can begin, and so that the church can renew itself," Ryan added.

The Speaker, who will retire in January, did not say whether Congress should get involved or has any oversight role in the matter. And aides and other lawmakers were quick to note Congress's limited powers when it comes to oversight of religious institutions.
"The primary responsibility still resides with the church," said Rep. John Larson (Conn.), a Catholic Democrat. After that, he said, "it would fall on the shoulders of states more so than the federal government."
Rep. Bill Pascrell (D), a New Jersey Catholic, was even more forceful.

"The church is fumbling, but fumbling along trying to handle it," he said, "I think the Congress should stay the hell out of it."
Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.), another Catholic, said Congress could play a role overseeing the Department of Justice and other law enforcement agencies, which have been criticized in places like Pennsylvania for doing too little to rein in the abuse.
"You could hold DOJ and our investigative and enforcement arms accountable for explaining why. Absolutely," Grijalva said. Aside from that, he said, Congress is essentially toothless.

Catholic bishop in West Virginia resigns amid sexual harassment investigation

By Jason Hanna, CNN

Updated 10:07 AM EDT, Thu September 13, 2018

https://www.cnn.com/2018/09/13/us/west-virginia-bishop-resignation-sexual-harassment-allegations/index.html

Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of a West Virginia bishop and has ordered a church-run investigation into allegations that the bishop sexually harassed adults, church officials said Thursday.
Michael Bransfield submitted his resignation as bishop of Wheeling-Charleston Diocese upon turning 75 last week -- and 75 is the age at which bishops are required to offer to step down.

Pelosi calls for ‘complete change’ in Catholic Church after widespread abuse

http://thehill.com/business-a-lobbying/406764-pelosi-calls-for-complete-change-in-catholic-church-after-widespread

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Friday called for a complete overhaul in the way the Catholic Church confronts sexual abuse.
Pelosi became the latest prominent Catholic lawmaker to condemn the Vatican's response amid reports of rampant sexual misconduct by clergy in the United States and beyond.
But Pelosi, who like Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) is a devout Catholic, said she's hopeful that Pope Francis and other church leaders will fix the problems from within, deflecting the notion that Congress should play any kind of oversight role.

In India, a nun’s #MeToo moment exposes the failings of the Catholic Church

By Barkha Dutt
September 14, 2018 at 11:00 PM

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/global-opinions/wp/2018/09/14/in-india-a-nuns-metoo-moment-exposes-the-failings-of-the-catholic-church/

For more than a week, five nuns have been protesting to say #MeToo.
On the road across from the high court of Kerala, a state that was once known for having a matrilineal society, the nuns stepped out of their cloistered lives, marching with placards warning that their lives were in danger. They were demanding action against Bishop Franco Mulakkal, who they say raped one of the nuns 13 times between 2014 and 2016. After failing to get the church to respond to her complaint, the nun registered a police complaint in June. While the man charged with rape has so far been interrogated just once, the woman has been questioned five times. The police made no arrest. This is despite 81 witnesses being questioned by the police, including two critical testimonies that blow a hole in the bishop’s alibi.

Catholic abuse crisis is likely no accident, but a strategy to ‘destroy Church from within’

September 17, 2018 (LifeSiteNews) – The shocking accusation by Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò that Pope Francis helped cover up sexual misconduct — an accusation the Pope has so far declined to answer — as well as the litany of sexual abuse cases among clerics, force any Catholic to ask the question: how could this possibly take place in the moral institution that is the Roman Catholic Church?

One possible — little known, but very important — answer dates back to the Bolsheviks and their Communist leader Joseph Stalin.

Recently, I came across a video on Youtube of a presentation by former Soviet KGB propagandist Yuri Bezmenov, aka Tomas Schuman,

who worked for the Soviet Union’s Novosti Press Agency until he defected in 1970. In this 1983 video, he claimed that the West was slowly being subverted into Marxism by the methods of “ideological subversion,” a form of warfare the KGB used against America.

Bezmenov explains that the main effort of the KGB was not conventional intelligence at all. Only some 15 percent of resources were spent on James-Bond-style espionage, while 85 percent was devoted to a slow process called “ideological subversion” or “active measures.”
