The Apostrophe - get rid of it?

Recommended Posts

"Misused apostrophes on signs "weren't setting a good example for society"", said a Bristol-based sign defacer.  I am not a grammar nazi, but have we come to the point where we don't actually need an apostrophe in English?  (Hasn't the world got anything more important to sort out than apostrophes?)

"It neatly demonstrates how intertwined notions of standard English and morality have become. More telling, in my view, was his later remark: that correcting apostrophes makes him "feel good"".

It helps with the understanding of written English language. People’s is different from peoples. Although, language isn’t static. If people stop using it, it will become obsolete and disappear.

Well, I don't know, but maybe it would cause some to start pronouncing the possessive word, Jesus', correctly without the apostrophe, instead of the incorrect way, Jesus'es.

We should also get rid of the lowercase letters. And most letters in the alphabet. I mean, does anyone ever use all of them? We should do just fine with 5 or perhaps 6. I mean, we’ve got the emojis.

Well,  the Hawaiian language only uses half as many letters as the English language does, they seem to have done ok...

Yes, but they use them 3 or 4 times in each word...

Oh, I have a difficult time with that. I remember reading the older publications that stressed learning proper grammar. I can't say I learned it in secular school, maybe partially. I think I learned my grammar, spelling and punctuation from the TMS and reading the publications.

Imagine the anxiety in seeing this every time I walked the dog. It was parked by the local industrial units for years. I’m proud that I never bought anything from him, as it was clearly a trap.
