Jehovah's Witnesses get bloodless surgery at Mercy Medical Center An Australian woman traveled more than 11,000 miles to Canton (Ohio) for life-saving surgery when a rare heart tumor reappeared. Madalyn Lim, 26, of Perth, Australia, does not accept transfusions as a Jehovah's Witness because she believes the Bible demands abstaining from blood. When surgeons in Australia determined it was impossible or too risky to operate under those conditions, Lim turned to Dr. Giovanni Ciuffo at Mercy Medical Center. Ciuffo previously ran a similar program at Aultman Hospital, where he still performs surgeries, and worked at hospitals in New York City. He is well-known for his work with Jehovah’s Witnesses, performing about 600 operations on Jehovah’s Witnesses in his 15-year career — a number he thinks may be the highest in the country. They were unable to find a local doctor in Indiana that would do her surgery and respect our stand on blood. The Branch recommended Dr. Ciuffo.
