A pretty interesting article, in light of the fact that Isaiah said it would never be inhabited again...

Either their restoration efforts will fail, or it will not be inhabited, but just be a tourist attraction.

Well Sadam tried this and he didn't get very far.

I completely agree with the statement that is is one of the most important archaelogical sites in the world. The British museum has a dedicated area and a tour with one of the pioneers is incredible. Reading Alexander Hyslops 'Two Babylons' and the book ' What has religion done for Mankind' (WT Society) really brings home how every sort of false religious practice comes from here.

It doesn't sound that they are intending to really rebuild the city to make it habitable, but rather to do their best at preserving what they have excavated, look for more ruins, and perhaps rebuild a few structures to make them like they were.

Simon's right, the article says "... have started working to preserve and restore part of city-state Babylon and other ancient Mesopotamian ruins", this isn't an effort to restore the entire city, just part of it and other cities. What I find interesting is the fact that the current Iraqi government which is pro-Sharia, are actually working to do it since it is from the time of "jahiliyah" or pre-Islamic "superstition" or "ignorance" (which means literally everything prior to Islam including Christianity and Judaism). If they don't actively destroy ancient ruins Muslims usually simply ignore them or pillage them for useful things and valuables they can melt down and/or sell. Arabic governments like Saddam and Syria's Ba'athists and the Egyptian government are exceptions but they are Socialists (usually Marxist) and only pay lip service to Islam to keep the real Muslims in line. It will be interesting to see whether Al Qaeda and the other groups allow it to happen.
