Your Computer/Tablet(s) Setup

Recommended Posts

I would just like to see what computers, laptops, and tablets everyone has. If you know the spec's post those too! If it's 20 years old or 3 days old post it.

I'm an IT guy (server admin) so computers and software are my favorites things to talk about sometimes. I like to build PC's from scratch. It's one of my passions since I was about 6 or 7 (I'm 31 now.) So regardless if you bought a complete PC or you built one I'd like us to share just for fun. As with sports teams we techy nerds can have brand fanboyism (Apple vs Microsoft.) So be kind, let's just talk about our geek/tech toys and have fun!

So I'll start with what I have:

Laptop (Mid 2013- Macbook Air):

4GB RAM - Intel Core i5 1.3Ghz - 250GB SSD - Apple Mavericks (10.9.2)

(Yes, I run Watchtower Library on this and it works fine! But with extra software.)

Desktop (Continuously built from 2011-2013):

16GB RAM - AMD FX-8350 4.0Ghz - Intel 128GB SSD & WD 500GB HDD - Nvidia GTX 680(x2) SLI - Windows 8.1

Server (Built in 2013):

16GB RAM - AMD FX-8150 3.6Ghz - WD 250GB HDD & WD Red 2TB HDD(x4) (Raid 5) - Adaptec 6405 (4 Port SAS) - VMWare Hypervisor 5.5
(Windows 2012 Essentials - Active Directory, Domain, DNS, File Server, and Video Streaming.)

(Windows 7 - For misc. surfing, bookmark syncing via iCloud for Chrome, and downloading iTunes purchases to file server. Also, remote use of full Watchtower Library from Tablet or remote PCs.)

(CentOS 6 - MySQL, Apache, and PHP)

Tablet:

32GB LTE iPad Mini - iOS 7.1

Sadly, I wish I never purchased AMD processors. I wish I had originally purchased Intel. I wanted to try something new other than Intel but I made a mistake! The FX-8150 used to be on my desktop but once I got the FX-8350 I made a server with the older processor. The desktop sadly doesn't get turned on much since I've been really busy with work and spiritual stuff. I use it for admin'ing my server once and awhile. The server is my pride and joy but it just sits there and serves up files. I mostly just use my laptop and tablet. Most things I can control via Remote Desktop any way. Oh! The server, desktop (when it's on), and laptop are backed up with Crashplan.

Your turn!  :)  :)  :)

I have been using the small computer since the Tandy Model 1 came out - yes, it pre-dates the IBM PC, and have built many boxes as well as used off-the-shelf models.

I was using an hp Pavilion dv600 with 2 gig of memory - but, the HDD died as well as the MB having some issues.

I had to "put together" another machine to use. So, I am currently using a Dell Optiflex GX280 (so reports System Info - although the box says gx620) with an Intel Pentium 4 2.80 GHz and 3 gig of memory - running Windows XP with SP3

I have the HP s2031 monitor connected to it (my FIL gave it to me new when he replaced his computer - he did not want to give up his exisitng monitor when the computer died)

I also have a 1 TB USB drive and several USB flash drive of varying sizes.

My tablet is a TMAX running Android

This is completely off topic...but I had a very sweet 95 year old brother sat next to me this morning using his tablet...he was visiting with the speaker, he took great joy in showing us what apps he used etc....what a fantastic old man, age is no limit :)

My first computer was way back in 1976. It was a Digital Group.

It had a Z80 processor and many boards that plugged into a mother board that was nothing but strip sockets on the MB. I literally built the computer. I bought the boards from a friend and ordered IC sockets, soldered them in and the pressed several hundred IC into the sockets! It was a miracle that it worked.

The clock speed was 2.5 MHz. The RAM was 16 kilobytes. I increased that to 64K by modifying the RAM board and new IC's. RAM was very expensive too.

Data input was by a cheap cassette tape recorder. The keyboard was a cobbled up thing of unknown brand. I used a monochrome monitor. The display had 64 characters by 25 lines. Awful resolution!

But that is all you had before the Apple and IBM computers came out.

Later I mounted two 8 inch single sided floppy's disk drives. (I upgraded to 1.4 MB dual sided floppy's later.) Man, were they noisy!  But much better than the tape drive. I never had a hard disk drive.

Software was by the CP/M disk operating system. This was a forerunner to the MS DOS that began  Microsoft fame.

I also had an operating system called Oasis. Sophisticated but I didn't use it much.

My son liked Tiny Basic. It ran on 4K of code and you typed in the Basic to run a program.

I did word processing on Word Star, that was very good, especially when you mastered the CTRL key combinations to edit a document. It actually was better than Microsoft Word in many ways.

Data crunching was with Dbase.com This was a programmable database that many businesses used. I didn't have a spreadsheet program.

I built my own cabinets and later found some aluminum cabinets with wood grain sides to house the system.

It ran quite well, except for the noisy floppy disk drives. The only problem is that it crashed quite often. I never found out why.

I finally sold the beast for $200.00 to a guy I knew.

I acquired another from a friend and it has a factory cabinet, two factory 8" floppies and a dual digital tape drive  that never worked.

Along with a 9" monitor and a factory keyboard.

I have to dig out the system and clean it up and get it going. Maybe it will see the likes of eBay someday.

I will spec out what I use now later.

That's pretty cool. There is no age limit! Someone that's 95 years old has seen A LOT OF TECHNOLOGY. lol A LOT! It's amazing to them I'm sure.

He found using the tablet was far more comfortable because of the arthritis in his hands, he had everything underlined etc in fact all he did bring to the meeting was his iPad :)

I remember writing short programs in Z80 assembly.  Boy, I was a geeky nerd!  Used to build my own PCs.  Always went with AMDs for some reason.  Glad I changed to Intel.

So my current PC is a laptop.  Intel Celeron, 1Gb, Windows XP (ah I know).  Its 9 years old, but served me well, and has a lot of software that I use and can't afford to buy a new laptop plus new versions of the software.Shall I risk running it after April 8th.  Might just disconnect it from the internet and use my Asus Note8 tablet for internet use.

Currently:

1 - Samsung Galaxy S3 phone with Android 4.3 (my 2 year contract is up in July - the S5 will be out and I can see about upgrading)

1 - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014) tablet with Android 4.3

1 - Sony Vaio Fit - S15:

4th gen Intel® Core™ i7-4500U (1.80GHz / 3.00GHz)
Windows 8.1 64-bit
Features: 15.5" Full HD touch display (1920 x 1080), 8GB RAM, 750GB (5400rpm) HDD, Intel® HD Graphics 4400, HDMI® out, USB 3.0, NFC

And from work I have started using an iPad air and let me say EQuipd - AWESOME!! (OK I have several times   :D ) - I am now using it INSTEAD of my note.

And Debbie uses her 27" iMac for work -
3.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor (Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz) with 6MB L3 cache

She used to dual boot it with Windows, but when she upgraded to this new machine - she just uses Mountain Lion (time to upgrade, eh? )

Just stop using Microsoft Essentials and use something like Avast and there should be no problems staying with XP.

Desktop (Built Fall 2011):
Intel i5 2500K ~4GHz - 16GB RAM - 2xSSD, 4xHDD - XFX Double D 6870 - Windows 7 - 3x Monitors + TV

Tablet:
16GB iPad Air iOS7.0

"Servers":
Pogoplug E02 - Arch Linux
Raspberry Pi Model B 256MB - Arch Linux

Can't remember the specs. Who lugs around 10 lb laptops anymore?  (td)

Phone: Galaxy S4 - "WICKED" V10 ROM (4.3)

I know I number of people who would never think about upgrading their PC were it not for all the messages about XP's EoL. If I could get them to switch to Linux they'd probably never buy a PC again (and I'd get fewer calls about slow computers filled with adware  (tu) ).

How do you like your "Wicked" ROM?? What prompted that one vs any other??? I am ready to load a custom ROM.

ESPECIALLY - how is the battery drain???

Oh nice. I used to have a Raspberry Pi but I gave it to my dad to fiddle with. I might get another one for a DHCP and DNS server. Very power and will come up pretty fast if power goes out or it's sitting on better.

You'll be playing with fire. As long as you don't accept everything that pops up and watch what you install I wouldn't worry too much. I definitely wouldn't use Internet Explorer though. The ActiveX controls will kill you and hackers are just waiting to exploit the heck out of XP. But to be on the safe side use some sort of antivirus. Avast or Avira.

I highly recommend it. I started off on stock, but when 4.3 came out I wanted something without all the bloatware installed by Samsung and my carrier. I tried a couple of "debloated" stock roms, but I always had worse battery life than stock 4.2.2. I looked through the xda-developers forum for my model, picked the most "professional" looking custom roms (Touchwiz based as I like the voice control features) and then sorted by total # of posts. WICKED was my first pick and when it worked I never bothered to try any other. I got a full day of battery out of stock. Now with WICKED I get 1.5 to 3 days depending on my light-to-medium usage.

My husband and I both have Samsung Galaxy2 10" tablets, 8GB with 16GB data disks. We use the tablets exclusively at all meetings, even Assemblies & Conventions. We both have 7" Galaxy tabs. Mine is 1st generation. Husband uses his in the ministry quite a lot.

We also have iPhone 4. I like features in both Apple and Android. Also HP pavilion slimline, Intel Premium Processor G620

etc., etc.

i have a question.... just got my wife a samsung galaxy tablet. her sister has an ipad, with ibooks which lets you touch a scripture reference, and it will pull it up. is there a similar app for the android?

Thank you,

James

Yes, it is Moonreader.  Download the pubs in epub format and the scriptures will pop up on the same page. Using the KM with Moonreader all links to publications will pop up. For example a talk in the Reasoning book, that part of the book will pop up.

Jerry, or anyone else who knows lol. I would like to get a samsung galaxy note 10.1

What is the difference between the 4.1 and 4.3? I can get the 4.3 for $500 and the 4.1 for $400. I'm not sure what to do. It's used mainly for theocratic things: study, meetings... Surfing the web... Is it worth it in your opinion to get the 4.3?

I found that the Samsung Note was hard for me to figure out so I ended up getting my D in L to send me back the older tablet I gave her and I sent her the Note. I just couldn't get the hang of the pen. And that might be because I just didn't see the need for it either. My D in L loves it. I had the 4.1. I don't know the difference between the newer one and the 4.1. Upgrade I guess.
