JW Library and ethernet cable

Recommended Posts

When running JW Library during the meeting we have a sound conflict when the ethernet cable is left plugged in to the computer.  The audio skips and pauses.

If the ethernet cable is unplugged first, then the computer booted uo, everything is fine. If the cable is left in, the cable needs unplugged and computer rebooted before the audio will play clearly.

Anyone else experiencing such difficulty?

I have not heard of that. Our does not have that problem.

Have you checked to make sure that the computer does not have the LAN and WIFI turned on and active? You do not need two connections to the Internet. It is possible for them to both be enabled and it can cause conflicts.

If possible, LAN is the best connection for the Hall computer. Faster and more secure.

With the ethernet cable plugged in, disable the LAN adapter (exact instructions will vary based on your OS), and try playing the audio again. If disabling the ethernet adapter causes the issues to stop, the problem is software/driver related, and if the problem continues it's hardware related, likely a grounding issue.

What kind of computer?  We recently replaced our computer because of sound drop out issues (dropping out during memorial was last straw).  It was a late 2014 Mac mini running Windows 10 using boot camp.

A brother donated an HP elite desk 800 series micro pc.  Works a lot better and no more audio dropouts.

It does sound like a grounding issue. Whoever installed the RJ45 Plug may have two of the eight wires of the CAT5/6 cable reversed. You can mess up two of the wires and it will still work but I can't remember which two.

Here is a wiring diagram to compare to the plug.

I'll pass that along.

We swapped out the ThinkPad laptop we were using for a pc.  We recently had a 3rd congregation start using our hall and the decision was to use their pc instead of our laptop.  This swap out was Saturday.  I don't know what type pc.

We had the same problem with the laptop.  Swapping hardware did not resolve issue.

I know we were not using wifi on the laptop, but that doesn't mean it did not have wifi.

I'll pass along the suggestions

What type of connection is there between the PC and the preamp?

If you're just using the PC's audio jack tied directly to a microphone input on the mixer, the lack of proper isolation will definitely cause problems.
