Running a desk fan at a lower voltage. (UK 220V)

Recommended Posts

No air-con here so we run desk fans. Even on the lowest speed they are just noisy enough to make it difficult to hear each other. So I was wondering if I could run them a bit slower at 110V instead of 220V using something like this:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/45W-STEP-DOWN-VOLTAGE-CONVERTER-Transformer-USA-TO-UK-110v-240v-/283301515565

and an adapter.

The fans are double-insulated, so just have a twin-core cable. And they are rated 40W max.

What do you think? Is the converter/transformer likely to produce significant heat? Will the fans work at 110V?

Thanks in advance.

Most likely ... this would apply:

What happens when you try to run a device designed for 220v at 110v?

It will depend upon the appliance. A toaster, a resistive heater, an incandescent bulb will function at roughly one-fourth of its capacity as the power input is proportional to the square of the voltage. An incandescent bulb will function as if its output has been dimmed. A CFL, an electric motor (a fan), a compressor (air-conditioner) will simply not run

You may just need to get a quieter fan.

Thanks John.

I suppose they will just stall and burn out.
