Higher Education in 1744

The Slave is giving us timely instructions about higher education and the problems can come from it. In 1744, another warning came out back when the Virginia legislature offered free tuition at the college of William and Mary to six Iroquois youths, they politely declined. Why? The Onondaga spokesman of the tribes Canasatego explained. 

 

"We have had some experience of it. Several of our young people were formerly brought up in colleges of the Northern provinces; they were instructed in all your sciences but, when they come back, they were bad runners, ignorant of every means of living in the woods, unable to bear either cold or hunger, knew neither how to build a cabin, take a deer, nor kill an enemy, spoke our language imperfectly; were therefore neither fit for hunters, warriors, nor counselors; they were totally good for nothing.

 

 "Were are however not the less obliged for your kind offer, though we decline accepting it: and to show our grateful sense of it, if the gentlemen of Virginia shall sent us dozen their sons, we will take great care of their education, and instruct them all we know, and make men of them." I guess the male student was becoming sissies while going to college.

 

 Yes, there is a lot immorality that goes on in Colleges. So, I wonder what they were doing back then in 1744? Did they party like it was 1799? As I dig deeper into this, I found some old records in Virginia and I came across of this unknown song!

But, when I woke up last night, I can swear it was yesterday.

I was using the out house, please do not shoot me if I go to fast If I was in there in a minute more, my head was going to blast. Indians all around us, we was not prepare to fight. But I have to drink some more so I can hear my belching tonight.

If you want to party, please knock down my door. I got a whiskey in the barrel and I am ready for more. Indians have axes, we going to die any day. Before we let this happen, now is time to waste our life away.

This is interesting point. Some people in Asia still want to go to college because they prefer easier jobs such as in working in offices. and get higher position but minimal time in the ministry.. After they are being laid off, they don't know how to survive.

Many people who went to  colleges so they can get a white collar jobs ends up not working in offices. And a good amount of  those who does work in offices or manager positions don't know what they are doing. I had a friend who was around 60 worked in McDonald's knew more the manager did. One day he was cooking eggs for a customer and the manager told him to do something else, when there was only two was cooking in the kitchen. He told her what he was doing and she was persistent. So, this would mean that he would burnt the eggs and cook eggs again. He told her that he is done about 45 minutes. So, she had to call about 5 workers to come in.

 

 There was only two people in the kitchen at the time, when I arrive there to meet my friend, there was about 7 workers in the kitchen. So, I went to his house ask him what was going on and he told me and I said there was about 7 people in the kitchen and he laughed. But, this everywhere. I was told many who work many years for the state of Michigan are retiring and saying that those who come in from colleges with degrees DON"T know what they are doing. They think that they can come in with a degree and start from the top instead starting at the bottom to see what is going on. SAD!!
