The star and the circle will do the same thing: if you click on them they will take you to the first unread post in that topic. 

 

The only difference is that, as Richard explained, it will be a star if you have already participated in that topic, and it will be a circle if you haven't.

I was hoping that you understand that stars do not appeal to me, but donuts ..hey!

After Emoji button on the right, you have "an eye" button ..click that... (located between emoji and insert bullet list)

When you respond to the topic ..you see line ..(above) that starts wit B I U S...8th to the right is emoji, click that and select from the list ..you have to look for it.

I usually post from my Android phone and I don't have those two icons. But I have them on my laptop. The interface for phones is very simplified.

Rotate your phone sideways so you are in landscape mode. Some of the menu is hidden when the phone is in portrait mode.
