Windows 7 (The end is near )

Recommended Posts

Windows 7 support is ending in few months..     (This is the END that actually comes with a date LOL :lol2:)

Confused what to do after that, continue using 7 without support?

Upgrade to 10? (not big fun)

Change all together to Apple?

Windows 7 users.. what is your plan?

Current 10 and apple users, any advice? suggestions?

Apple makes amazing products but I just could not get used to the Mac operating system.

I’m an Apple fan but personally I wouldn’t go all in with Apple only - there may be times when you need something that is Windows only supported. My wife works from home & can’t use a Mac due to her company’s software limitations.

You could go with a MacBook Air, install Parallels then install Windows 10 - best of both worlds.

I am thinking the same ...it's just my business is here too, and I am worried that my accounts, contact and sensitive contract information can be compromised ...so it's not only personal info.

And I really dislike windows 10.

On my main, everyday PC, I upgraded to 10 a long time ago ... like back when 10 came out - I have not had any problems and I do not mind using 10 at all.

On one computer I have that runs a special application I just never bothered. I turned off updates and just use 7 ... after all, they are only discontinuing "support", they are not crippling 7 or killing PC's that run it - it will continue to run the way it has always run until the hardware dies of old age.

Think about it, if you still had a computer that has Windows 3 on it and decided to fire it up, it would still work .... and they have not supported 3 for a long time.

I really don't see what people have against 10 ... my migration from 7 to 10 was painless ... and I only have 4 GB in this PC

Me Windows 7 user too.  :taz:

I have been trying to upgrade to Windows 10, I wasn't able to get the free upgrade.

But I have not seen a good discounted price yet, so I am patiently waiting.

But Greg, I think it may be more important for you to upgrade because of your business and confidential information. Maybe more experienced techies can tell you the reason to upgrade or not. And I would think that the various Anti-virus programs, VPNs, etc, are of higher standards for Windows 10 than for older Windows versions.

I upgraded to Windows 10 when it was first released and free. It was more browser than I needed and too complicated for me. I was so happy to be able to go back to 7.

I hope it lasts as long as I do...😊

You can still upgrade to 10 for free. You just do the upgrade (or a fresh install) and tell it you will "register" later. It will be fully functional where it counts. There are certain features that will not be available but, those features are "cosmetic", not functional".

Just do a Google search for "Free Windows 10" ...   https://www.zdnet.com/article/heres-how-you-can-still-get-a-free-windows-10-upgrade/

I had the same experience as you did. I have no problem with Windows 7 and hope it continues to work fine after the support ends. If not, I will reluctantly buy a new computer and learn the new version.  😟

Me too. I still have it on my old laptop, with Windows 10 on the new one.

Me too! I think it's the worst thing Microsoft has ever inflicted on us innocent Windows-buyers! For starters, I hate those upgrades every six months. They are a major... [insert your own expletive here]! They seem to arbitrarily uninstall programs, and disable useful features.

I am using Windows 10 to post this (in a useless attempt to get used to it), but in lots of ways Windows 7 is just way better. It's easier to use, better looking aesthetically, 3D-looking, etc. Windows 10 is a never-ending search for solutions to problems, "square" looking, flat, etc. I'm not the only one. See this discussion of Windows 10 update 1903 (and there are plenty more negative articles about Windows 10). I even sent a message to Microsoft in the Make Windows better feedback section of Windows 10. I asked that they scrap Windows 10 and continue supporting for Windows 7 past next January! (Watch them follow that suggestion really quick!)

Rant over...

Vista was the worst and 98 the 2nd worst. I liked win 3.11 with 3rd party add on start button plus 95C+ and win ME

I never used Vista, so you could be right. I liked 98 though, and still have it (and use it) on an even older desktop computer. 3.11 was a darling too, but stopped using it when I got 98. Some of it is a matter of opinion I suppose.

Sometimes, it is not a matter of Microsoft "going back to a 'favorite' version" of Windows. It is also not always their fault that a new version can seem overly cumbersome.

Technology moves forward. The CPU, RAM and other critical parts of the PC change constantly. If you were to try to install Windows 3.1 on a new PC, it would not work because the older OS is not compatible with the modern hardware. Likewise, if you tried to install Windows 10 on the PC than can run 3.1 - it would not install because the older hardware is not compatible with the modern OS.

In addition to that, Microsoft is required, by law, to make all new version of their OS to be "backward compatible" a certain amount ... this is supposed to help those who cannot buy a new PC just because Windows has a newer version - so, it sometimes makes it a bit more difficult for MS to transit as smoothly as they want to. The interesting thing about this is that Apple is not required to do this ... has to do with MS almost being a "monopoly" while the government does not view Apple as having anything that resembles a monopoly.

So, either we quit having advances in hardware so we can keep our favorite OS - or we complain and move on.

Now, I will agree that the "flat look" is not as pleasing to MY eyes as the older 3-D look was - the change was not made because the new OS and/or hardware cannot do it ... it is the generation of programmers who think the flat look is "cool" - so, like many of the bells-and-whistles added to software like word processors and spreadsheets, we still get stuck with them even if we never use them because the guys writing the software think they are "neat"

The end of it all is, if you like whatever version of Windows you have on your PC and want to stick with it ... the software will continue to work, even without support and updates, as long as the hardware survives. However, the that PC's hardware dies - you will have to use whatever OS is working with whatever PC you buy.

then it conks out. I think (or perhaps hope) most Trojans would be designed to hit those using Windows 10 - but I won't go onto banking or anything on that PC ... just use it to download music/movies from jw.org.  You can still get virus protection yes? Just not updates.

Patches in updates won't work. No-one wants to hack us kiwis down here anyways we are little fry ... isolated from the rest of the world.

Seeya for now - off to watch the continuing saga of 'blocked drain 134' on youtube.

Yeah, I have third party security software "monitoring" the system, but without updates from Microsoft - will this be enough?

I hate when system enforces on us "upgrades"

I don't have to say anything negative about Windows 10 (before used Windows 7). No complaints about that. Got free version because, like Microsoft said, everyone Windows 7 user had a chance to upgrade their system to Windows 10 for free. And I grabbed that chance.
