Kenyan Schoolgirl Commits Suicide After "Menses Shaming" from Teacher

Recommended Posts

Many times ignorance isn't so bliss!

It's difficult to imagine, in this day and age, that the subject or conversation among young girls and women having their menses, remains a deep taboo in many parts of the world.  When I read the other day the story of 14-year old who killed herself because she felt shame and embarrassment as a result of the tongue-lashing received from her teacher in front of the whole classroom, I asked myself: I don't understand?  It's a rite of passage for every female on this planet to have her period!

But little did I know that the "talk of menstruation" is a stigma in many underdeveloped countries.  (See map below.) Fortunately, there are brave women who are trying to break that stigma, but are meeting some resistance even today.

Who ultimately is to blame for the death of this girl?  The teacher who shamed Jacklin? Or her mother for not preparing her for the changes in her body? (Deut. 6:6, 7)

So sad!
