Our Land is Young ... quote made regards NZ.

Recommended Posts

We have a main route just north of us blocked due to slippage ... cutting off the easy route to nearby Rataehi and Ohakune - main tourist spots in Winter. Which is fine for tourists as they do have other routes - but our Town will lose out on many who would have otherwise passed through.

But that's not what I wanted to know ... they are considering some ways of clearing it - including explosives, but someone said that the Land in NZ is too young to do a lot of things and will cause further slippage. I've heard some say that as regards our granite too - that we need to source it overseas as NZ Granite is too young and thus not dense enough to use for inscribing.

So my question/query is - just because NZ is among the last to be colonized how does the equate to being young geologically speaking as well? Or does it? Or is the Evolution speaking?

I am thinking our granite is just simply not as dense as that of overseas due to make up of elements.

Going back to my High School days (last millennium now), I remember being taught that Oz (your closest neighbour) was young compared to Europe. That conclusion was drawn from the very thin layer of 'top soil' we have down here compared to Europe where it is quite (meters) thick.
It was given as a reason why colonial settlers struggled getting crops to yield like 'back home'.
I don't know if this is still the current thinking...

The stability of the Australian continent, with limited volcanic activity for many millions of years, and the relatively small amount of seismic activity is the result of Australia being situated in the center of its tectonic plate, well away from the active regions along its margins, particularly in New Guinea and New Zealand.

So volcanic&seismic activity has huge bearing on the term "geologically young" which places NZ as a "young"

Correct me if I am wrong..

I think it might be along these lines. Remember one of your great grandfathers’ and his brother took Punamu from NZ, to China and they rejected it because of a black fleck through it. It was not up to their standard. The on-sold it in Australia. Most of the Zealandia content is under water. The part above the water is known as New Zealand, but look at it on google earth. All of the light colour around New Zealand is continental shelf and is geologically different to the sea-bed. Its not so much that New Zealand is geologically young, as much as it is diverse and different to other parts of the world.

There are lots of videos on this topic.
