Mammoths and Other Meat

Recommended Posts

Here’s my thinking. As far as can be discerned, the last of the woolly mammoths (Mammuthus primigenius) died isolated on Wrangel Island about 1650 BCE. That’s a very exact date. I didn’t make it up. It’s from a TED Blog.

They also claim this:

“The Rouffignac cave in France has 158 depictions of mammoths, making up about 70% of the represented animals that date back to the Upper Paleolithic period. There is also evidence of the use of bones and tusks by humans to create portable art objects, shelters, tools, furniture and even burials.”

When the last mammoth died on Wrangel Island, they were famous on old cave paintings all over the world. A find in Krakow with a spearhead in a mammoth rib gives ample evidence that they were hunted.

Probably. Some researchers believed that it was man’s appetite for mammoth meat that drove it to extinction, combined with changed habitats.
