Boxing for Fitness

Have you had an opportunity to research this? Can you share your research with us first?

Hi Bro Richard,

what Ive found from an 81 WT QFR. Boxing in a competitive and full contact sport is not appropriate for christians. Boxing in this perspective shows they are out to hurt and injure one another. That’s not the intention of what I was asking. Non contact and non competitive. Hitting a boxing bag and pad work for fitness. Would others view this as intent to inflict violence?
thanks.

How do you feel about it?

Do you think it makes a difference if it's a brother or sister or has any service privileges?

HI Rocco,

Here are some thoughts to consider concerning boxing for fitness for us as Christians:

Consideration of others’ consciences:

  • How would the consciences of brothers/sisters in my congregation and the community feel about boxing for fitness?
  • Although a Christian may feel they are just "exercising" and not boxing or hurting anyone, how do others view it? (It would be good to ask the local elders and others in the congregation their viewpoint)
  • If a brother/sister is "exemplary" having special privileges, would others still respect them, follow their lead, if they knew about the boxing exercising/training?

Personal conscience:

  • As for the personal conscience of the brother/sister boxing for fitness, it would be good to ask themselves questions such as, "Why am I choosing boxing for fitness instead of aerobics, weight training, basketball, tennis, etc?"
  • Do I like the "aggressive" aspect of boxing for exercise?
  • Do I feel that boxing for fitness is a way of me getting out some of my anger or frustrations?
  • If I do this kind of boxing exercise/training, could it cause me to become more aggressive with others?
  • If provoked in a situation, might my boxing training cause me to want to fight rather than display humility and meekness like Jesus?

Jehovah

  • How does Jehovah view such boxing exercise/training?
  • I know Jehovah' hates violence, but would He consider this kind of exercise as training in violence? Or just a form of exercise?
