Air conditioning in hall.

Recommended Posts

I'm having a bit of a gripe. Not for the first time, the air conditioning last Sunday subjected us to freezing blasts of cold. And also not for the first time. I complained, to no avail. Sunday night my throat was sore, and by Monday I'd come down with a full blown cold and fever. Sooo fed up with the problem!

The temperature at the hall is always a problem because everyone has a different bodily thermostat. Sometimes I need to go out of the hall for a few minutes because I feel about to faint due to heat, and yet I see a lot of sisters with their coats on.

Attendants have instructions from the branch regarding the temperature they must set the air conditioner.  In Spain it's are 23 centigrade degrees in summer and 21 in winter. Nobody is authorized to change that setting. That's good because at least you know what temperature will be at the hall and can wear more or less clothes accordingly.

I hope you get well soon, Jennifer.

Jennifer..I am so sorry you are sick..I can certainly empathize with you. My husband's hands get so cold, he sometimes brings his fur lined gloves, and I try to lean his way to help him feel a little warmer. A sister who brings her mother with her to the meeting bought a soft "blanket" and drapes it over both their laps in the last 30 minutes..that seems to be when the air gets the coldest. It may be that at that time the system is freshening, filtering the air for the friends at the next meeting. I am thinking about the "blanket" solution..but as Carlos said, some are quite warm. One sister fans herself during most of the meeting..on and off..😌

Many years we had a similar problem at our KH and we eventually discovered that a brother had bent all of the ceiling vent vanes downward in the mistaken idea that it would help the air flow. The poor brother was not asked to do this, he was not authorized to do it and he was not a qualified technician. He unfortunately made the problem worse because now the cold air would blast down on a few seats instead of being evenly distributed. The poor sisters sitting in the wrong seats would freeze while everyone else was comfortable.

Problem is also, it's been so cold that we're breathing in this really cold air, so a blanket doesn't quite fix the problem. Now my chest hurts too. And I'm not the only one.

Thanks Carlos, I know how you feel about it being too hot too. The temperature should be comfortable. The recent assembly we had got it Just perfect, I wish we could get the same at the hall! Oh well!

One solution would be to wear a ski mask of which covers your nose and mouth.  That would certainly get their attention and solve your problem of breathing cold air and the nice thing is, you don't have to say a word in complaint.

A scarf would be more fashionable.

I found this thin fleece 50" X 60" lap blanket at W-mart ($2.50!!) and used it last night over my lap down to my feet and it worked great..thin but warm and rolls up to 12" X 6" roll to fit in the cloth carrying bag I bring to the meetings!

Couple things.

So the way I understand it, you don't get sick because of temperature, you get sick because of germs. I think most hospitals and such are kept cool to actually prevent bacterial and viral growth.

We can always add clothes to warm up, we can only take off so much. (thankfully)

Most everyone has a different body thermostat and thus it is hard to please everyone. A few simple things we can do for ourselves is to find that warm or cool (er) spot in the hall. Take a light cover (blanket, throw whatever) and be patient with folks.

Not trying to diminish anyone's feelings here just saying we won't be perfect for a few more years and we have to deal with these issues as best we can, not taking it personal. Once had a Elder threaten to have me removed cause his wife was cold. I asked him to move from beneath the vent he was sitting in and he refused. :shrugs:
