"Shelter in place" planning

Recommended Posts

Our family is developing a "Shelter in place" plan that we can use for an extended self quarantine or disaster.

We want to develop the plan to ensure we can be completely self contained for at least 30 days or have viable options listed to sustain a self quarantine.

We will list contact numbers, minimum food inventory,  cash flow, pet care, medications,  etc. Anything that will be needed to maintain a 30 day "Shelter in place" and anything that will be affected by sheltering.

I'd like some help brainstorming ideas to include in the plan.

I would make a menu out for meals for the month, then you have lists of ingredients.... and then you know what you must store or buy..

Don't forget medications,  many pharmacies won't give out any further medication than you need for the immediate few weeks ahead.

You're going to keep 30 days of water **for each family member** stocked up??

There currently isn't any reason to think that my water will be shut off if I am sick or self quarantined.

My wife cares for all of the family medical information but I need to be prepared in case she is sick, so part of the plan addresses prescriptions, doctors, contact information, delivery options, automatic refills, etc...

Went for a few items at grocery store 3 hours ago. A lot of the shelves were empty.  Some were items on sale - none or just one flavor ( store brand = to Becel margarine- only original flavor- but $2 off plus I got $0.40 in points )

Consciousness, that annoying time between naps!

We are at high risk and elderly, therefore have been staying away from stores..Instead I found where to order organic online with free shipping. Actually, the website is online, but they are in Lexington, N.C. and have a phone number. I don't like using my credit card online, so I order by phone. Free shipping and right now 15% off already discounted products. Some things I have ordered...Silver Biotics Silver Solution, Amy's refried beans, pintos and black beans, honey, rice, gluten free penne, Olive oil, cranberry sauce, albacore tuna, almond flour, ghee, pickles, mayonaise, ketsup, pumpkin, apple sauce, lemon spread..and other foods and supplements..all organic gmo free. You can google the item you are looking for at..Vitacost. (Phone # below)

I'm initially creating an outline. I'm looking for suggestions for things to discuss.

Hmm...

* How about an emergency kit (band-aids, neosporin, etc.)

* How about keeping an extra gas can full of fuel for your vehicle or generator if you have one and try to keep the car fueled up, in case of an emergency.

* Write a list of items out that you need for the household, then designate so many items per person so noone gets overhwhelmed.

* Make sure you have plenty of dishwashing and laundry supplies (detergent, bleach, etc.)

* Maybe go over the list as part of preparedness for disasters during family worship?

This CDC checklist might give you a few ideas : https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/home/checklist-household-ready.html

Your discarded shell not big enough for a shelter?

We've set up a big bucket for water ... going to connect it to the drain somehow.

Making chicken casserole (Tinned stew in shops almost gone so making my own)

We had some tomatoes from our kit burst because of the heat we didn't know so got on a lot of stuff. So make sure where you store it isn't prone to overheating.

In the middle of disease crisis a single adult could go through a packet panadol in a day-two days ... so have plenty of that.

Get some vitamins for pets  - in case their food changes or they have to eat less.

1. Solar panel to charge phone

Our 'go bag' has most items necessary, but it would only last 5-7 days. It may be prudent to stock up.

The only things I cannot control are the utilities to the house. Water I have. Power loss would be problematic. I think solar panels (folding /camping ones) would be top of my list. With power charging my phone, I have a connection to the cong and also what is going on in the area (as long as the cell tower is operational).

When the cyclone hit us 2017, there was no power for 10 days. (And no water, as electric pumps supply our water) Even the cell towers failed after their battery backup ran down (2 days later).

But this is not a weather event...

Maybe stock up on anti-bac wipes.

There is plenty of soap in the house and we have lots of alcohol based wipes.

I'm not only thinking of survival but we are looking at what information I need from my wife if she was sick and what information she would need from me if I was sick..

I'm not only thinking of survival but we are looking at what information I need from my wife if she was sick and what information she would need from me if I was sick..

Firstly, soap doesn't work at all without water and you'll be shocked how useless you'll be without water. Think of how much you use for drinking, bathing, cooking, cleaning

Secondly, none of us can help you plan for your wife's potentially getting sick. We don't know anything about her.

Lastly, Are you living in a rural or urban area? How many people in the home? How far is the closest friendly neighbour? How often does your home or neighbourhood suffer power loss? Do you have a car? How reliable is it?

It's really difficult to offer advice when we know so little about your current needs, circumstances, and lifestyle.

My wife bought 5 5-gal buckets of dry survival food, each 11lbs 11.02 oz bucket is enough for 2 people for one month, 160 servings each. Just add hot water. At first I thought it would taste bad but hey it was really good. Wise Co. ESSENTIAL PREPAREDNESS SOLUTION (Creamy Pasta Rotini, Chicken Noodle Soup, Cheesy Mac, Hearty Tortilla Soup, SW Beans and Rice, Rice Pilaf, Loaded Backed Potato, Stroganoff, Brown Sugar & Maple Multi Grain, Powdered Egg, Orange Drink Mix, Powered Whey Milk, Yogurt, Chocolate Pudding, Sliced Strawberries, Whole Kernel Corn.) We started on one bucket 3 years ago on camping trips and still have a lot of it left. Even picky eating grandchildren liked it.

We cannot incite if we are not in sight.___Heb.10:24,25
