My email got hacked (Warning!)

Recommended Posts

Hi friends,

Yes, my email got hacked and as a result I had to close ebay account, (in a process of Pay Pal account as they tried to use it , same with ebay, also someone is posting strange videos on my facebook.)

Somehow they got password to my primary email account.

How it happend?

Well one day I was downloading video templates from You Tube, when I tried to use them (open) my Firefox browser went blue...and froze my computer ...problems started from there .

Warning: Do not download anything from You Tube links  (they are not safe)

As I speak, I am calling my internet provider advising them to reset my email passwords ....etc..etc.

Lesson learned hard way .

Yahoo informed me yesterday that someone from Vietnam was trying to hack into my email account.

As if we don't already have enough on our plates just dealing with this virus. :(

So glad evil will soon, very very soon, be a thing of the past. :D

I was thinking about how with so many people all over the world now not working as much or not working at all, and with many areas having "stay at home orders", this means there are millions of people on the internet much more often. So part-time "hackers" may become a full-time hackers, people addicted porn will be watching more porn, scammers will be doing more scamming! So thanks to Greg's warning, it may be good for us to update/change passwords, get better virus/malware protection, etc. I started doing this recently, including getting a good VPN.

That's not hacking as in brute force decryption or bypassing protection, it's called social engineering. They tricked you into exposing your computer and personal information. It doesn't matter what protection you use if you don't pay attention to the links that you're clicking on or what applications you're loading. Always check before clicking. The links may have even been valid at one time but were redirected to something malicious if the address was no longer hosted and bought out by someone else. You need to be very wary of downloading free things from social media or unknown websites. It sounds like you downloaded and ran an application executable, what file type was it? They can direct you to download remote desktop software like TeamViewer or even Zoom to take control of your computer, or install keyloggers, trojan viruses that relay data. If you've been compromised it's best to restart with a completely fresh operating system installation, they may still have access to your's.

I am getting rid of Norton Security and switching to Bitdefender. (in tests performed better than Malwarebytes.)

Very happy with Bitdefender, Norton failed to find threats ..

Bitdefender on other hand found Trojan downloader on my computer and removed it.

I think it pays to have the best protection software on your computer.

Not regretting getting rid off Norton, and switching to Bitdefender.

Generally speaking, Windows Defender is enough for most people. Malwarebytes isn't bad, though I used to be partial to Spybot Search & Destroy ever since Windows XP. You should go through your Windows Security settings and make sure that everything is okay and not allowing anything to run without at least a warning. Make sure Windows is updated and run a full offline defender scan. If possible, it's still best to make a backup of your personal files and do a clean reinstall of everything.

Hey Alex,

I still run Spybot once in a while and it scans and finds issues that other programs don't find. (tu)

Yeah, Spybot is solid for free, especially when it comes to immunizing your registry against Adware/Malware/Spyware etc. Also, make sure you're always using a decent browser.. Chrome, Edge, Firefox etc are okay. Brave is built on Chrome but with built in script blocking that you usually need addons in Chrome or Firefox for. For Firefox, definitely download HTTPS Everywhere. Also consider Ghostery or NoScript for script blocking, but be aware that they can break a lot of websites. Internet Explorer is very unsafe.

I've been using bitdefender for years. Bitdefender warns of dangerous websites, does not open certain websites and programs. And immediately deletes dangerous memory content from pages like MSN etc.I surf a lot and have had no problems for years.

No, it's not free for a reason (because is good) ..in my books worth every cent that I paid for.

When it comes to your CPU the, this is entirely separate issue. This world forces us to upgrade.. upgrade...upgrade….:depressed:

If you're are happy with what you have, then stick with it.

Now, I just read that hackers are targeting Covid-19 hospitals with "ransomware" software demanding payments.

SICK world.

It may be worth the money ... but, I do not have an endless supply of money for everything that is worth the price. I have been operating for many years with free versions of protection with good results ... you just have to pick the right free stuff

  • 4 weeks later...

I should have come here before I went shopping for a virus program.  Years and years ago, I used norton regularly.  But when I sought it out again, there was a lot of bait and switch with the program's marketing.  I used to think it was funny that Norton, who is/was a real person, made sure that to launch his program you had to type Norton at the MSDOS prompt, like you were calling him.  (yep, that many years ago).  About a couple of weeks ago, on my first foray into Zoom, the tablet screen busted loose with multicolored numbers, and Chinese!  The laptop closed down too, and I thought I might have to listen to the meetings over the phone until the corona virus went away,

It was depressing, but I didn't give up yet.  I tried AVG which  had a better deal, but I am still working on installing everything, over two weeks later.  Microsoft had a free trial on its Total AV, and I think it got me online again.  I still have AVG and it is updating programs and tuning stuff, and cleaning every self-respecting virus that dares to show its head, plus it tells me when something is wrong, plus I have it for a year with a free installation on other systems for much less than Norton's price who wanted more money for what I got in the AVG package.

But now you remind me that McAfee was a favorite among engineering students, and it is still around.  I am ok with AVG though, despite the fact that it is taking a loooong time.

By the way, I used to use Spybot too, but couldn't find it - glad it is still around.

I have a dislike for Norton because back in the days of tiny hardrives it was way too big. I liked Kaspersky, but currently using Spectrum  Antivirus which has worked flawlessly for the last 10 years and is free to Spectrum subscribers.

Kaspersky is very effective antivirus, but do not keep any nuclear files on your computer. The CIA thinks it leaks. :)
