Explaining origin of different races to a youngster.

Recommended Posts

So just restarted a study with a friend who has started sharing the truth with his young ones.

The question of “ if we all came from  Adam and Eve why so many different races now...” wonderful question and the organisation has some really helpful information but what I’ve seen isn’t particularly tailored to young ones, am I missing a good reference ( probably!) or have any of you brothers and sisters used any illustrations that could help a young one understand .

thnx in advance. Gu

We have to think of terminology. The Bible does not say what skin color Adam and Eve had. Regarding races, there is only one race for all mankind and that is the Human Race. There are people with different skin colors. Basically genetic mutations alter ones genes in the past so their descendants produce different skin colors.

You and your wife might be light skin and might gave birth to a darker skin baby because the baby ggggg mom might been black. It is one of the curve balls that Jehovah pitched and you did not see it. Why? Because it is the beauty of his creation.

If we all came from Adam and Eve why so many different colors of hair? Or eyes? Or any other genetic differences?

That's where I would go. Teach that skin color is just like eye color or hair color.  Or that shape of noses is just like shape of lips or ears or eyes.

Phillipians 4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are of serious concern, whatever things are righteous, whatever things are chaste, whatever things are lovable, whatever things are well-spoken-of, whatever things are virtuous, and whatever things are praiseworthy, continue considering these things.

Interestingly, evolution teaches that all humankind comes from a single couple of individuals, so even if you believe in evolution you still have this issue of the origin of races.

The explanation is quite simple. Adam and Eve had in their genes all the variety of ethnic features we see today. It's not unusual for a blond couple, for example, to have a dark haired baby if a grandfather or a greatgrandfather was dark-haired. Where I say blond and dark-haired you can substitute with any racial feature. Eye color, skin color, whatever. How can that happen? Because those genes were there, waiting for their chance, even if they didn't manifest in the previous generations.

It's the same with Adam and Eve. They had all those genes. In every one of his descendants different genes manifested. Then, after Babel, people separated in smaller groups, many of which became isolated for centuries and only procreated among themselves, so their racial characteristics became more accentuated.

God's will was for humans to spread out across the globe "to become many and fill the earth".  So that implies that the different genes would not have manifested itself in arbitrary groups we call "races".  There would have been a blend of different characteristics all throughout the earth.  After Babel, people with the same language groups gravitated together, and the gene pool more or less "stagnated" and so the most prominent genes became dominant among that population in that area.

It's easy to see the "throwbacks" in my family.  I have mediterranean background, dark hair, eyes and skin.  My grandson is blond with green eyes, and looks highly un-Mediterranean.  Australia is a melting pot of cultures. My grandson has my Greek/Italian, my husband's Australian/English, his parents Australian/English and his other Grandparents Australian/New Zealand/English backgrounds.  This is a fascinating topic, for sure.

Children, depending on their tender ages, have short attention spans.  So, explaining to a young child - or even a prepubescent - a subject such as the "science of genetics" and the "origin of race" can be a delicate, complex  task for many adults.  As you may know, children love colourful illustrations, visual aids, and explanations on subject matter that are easy to comprehend.  And with these learning tools, what you present or illustrate to children will no doubt leave an indelible impression on them.

If you haven't seen this beforehand, here is an Awake article that would shed some light on the subject which, in turn, could be illustrated to a young child, depending on age.

So get your poster and color magic markers ready! :)

I wonder if people born 10,000 years later could be classified according to their races.. I think there will be only one race.. human race.

I look very Asian so maybe they could at least tell I’m ancient.

Sorry so to answer the question we have distinctly different races because God confused the language and similar looking people ended up marrying one another.

The genetic combination that resulted in your appearance will still exist.

Genes are like rolling a handfull of dice.  The same number combinations will show up again and again in later rolls.

True that, there are some crazy historical dopplegangers.

There is even one that I found that looks like me, lol .

Which is so crazy when you can identify that certain features are inherited and are a result of your parents too, they each would have also got it from "their" parents and so on.

The way I understood it as a small child was that Adam Eve were created perfect although they later sinned.  And Jehovah put it in them the ability to produce all the different colors we see in their descendants.  Also that Jehovah wanted all the different colors and what we call races so he created Adam and Eve with that ability.  You can tell them scientists acknowledge that we all came from the same people and really we are all basically the same even though we look different. Acts 17:26 part a.

Since we're talking I about the subject I thought that I would share some things about my family.

My great grandfather on my mother's side my grandmother's father.  Had reddish hair but all seven of his children had light brown to almost black hair depending on the child.  His wife my great grandmother had very dark hair. However a few of his children would get auburn highlights if they went out in the sun as do my mom, her brother and I.  Although we have mostly very dark hair, and I am multi-racial, White, Black, and Native American.  But I have some coppery colored strands in my hair that you can hardly see but I get more if I'm out in the sun.  I have a cousin who has three children and she couldn't figure out where all the reddish color in the hair  of one of her children came from until my mom told her.

Every once in a while there will be an Auburn or red headed cousin in the family.

Also I would like to mention that my great grandfather's twin brother who definitely was not an identical twin they were fraternal twins.  Looked nothing like my great grandfather.  My great grandfather as mentioned had reddish hair, he did not have dark eyes, he was very fair and sunburned through his shirt sleeves, and was five feet ten inches.  His twin had very dark hair, dark eyes, I don't know how dark his skin was but it was dark in comparison to his brother's he wasn't fair, and he was six feet four inches.

I’m probably too late with this reply but here goes in case I’m not.   You could illustrate by using the example of dogs.   There are many different breeds and colours and shapes and sizes of dogs but in the beginning Jehovah made only one kind of dog.  It’s because if breeding that there are so many different ones now.  It’s similar with humans, there were only two created but because they have married and reproduced we now have all the different peoples on the earth but they are all basically the same on the inside and they all have the same needs.

I vote this one the best and easiest to explain to a young child. 🙂
