Auto Warranty Phone Scams

Recommended Posts

Every day, sometimes several times a day, I get phone calls from

scammers about my auto's warranty.

I kept threatening to read up on this annoying phenomenon and, today,

after receiving yet another car warranty scam phone call, I finally did.

Watch out for Auto Warranty Scams

If you own a vehicle and a phone, you may receive calls from scammers posing as representatives of a car dealer, manufacturer or insurer telling you that your auto warranty or insurance is about to expire. The call will include some sort of pitch for renewing your warranty or policy.

During the call – which often begins automated or pre-recorded – you may be instructed to press a certain number or stay on the line, then asked to provide personal information, which potentially can be used to defraud you.

Our cars were purchased used and so they didn't come with any warranties.

We have even received this scam via snail mail and email.

My truck is 13 years old and has over 345,000 miles on it and had had a different motor put in it ... I still get calls/email/snail mail telling me "your warranty is about to expire".

I have not had a warranty from day 1! I bought the truck "used" when it only has 23,000 miles on it. It had been a "lease vehicle" that came back to the dealer when the 6 month lease expired and they sold the truck as used. It was sold "As Is" and did not have a warranty. Even if the original warranty had been in force, it would have ended at 100,000 miles.

If I do happen to answer an "unknown" number and get one of these people on the phone I just laugh when they tell me my warranty is "about to expire". I asked a couple of them, "What Warranty? Do even know how old my truck is?" That stops them in their tracks because they do not really know what I drive - it IS a scam, after all. I don't give them a chance to have me "press a number" or "hold for someone [else]" ... I hang up long before that and block the number.

The stuff that comes in the email or snail mail just gets deleted/trashed unread.

My advice on any phone call about any subject is  ... if they can't give you your full name, policy number and you can't ring them from your account details ... then treat everything as a scam. Anyone legit will let you call them back on a known number and ask for them or they would provide you with details without having to garner any information from you at all.

I got a call the other day from someone claiming they had a great deal for duct ( heating/AC ) cleaning. He had a sub continent accent - India or Pakistani.

Mention I live in apt with rad heat "ClicK"

Then there are all those recording calls from ( cell phone provider name ) Chinese dept. From area codes all over the place. Sorry don't speak Chinese. Poke.

My nuisance scammer calls have all been pre-recorded robo calls.

Would practice my phone witnessing presentation but they never shut up.  :D
