Try and live without internet at home?

Recommended Posts

Looking back, if there’s one thing that cost a lot of my time other than spiritual activities

would be internet. But most of Internet use isn’t really fruitful.. It has fun, information but very few have turned out to be truly meaningful.

I have no TV, no telephone (I have a smart phone) at home but now I’m thinking of even completely removing internet from my house.

(This requires me to change my phone too.. there are some phones with no internet function)

Have you tried this before? I’m actually excited and looking forward to that lifestyle. (I don’t know how long it will last, though. but I’m seeing at least one or two year)

(Of course, I would have internet at cafe and my workplace. Only no internet at home)

Would that impact your spiritual activities?

Exciting challenge; Would be cool to keep a video/written journal of the experience. Stock up on some good books to read!

Nice idea haven’t thought of that!

Thx!

This may not be a good time to quit the internet. How are you going to attend your meetings, go in service and get in touch with the friends?

Maybe it would be better to wait until meetings at the hall are resumed.

I think this is where Korea is different.

Internet is everywhere! Cafe, workplace, my family’s house.

Internet is a lifeline these days. News, research, jobs, and especially spiritual information- for me it is absolutely essential.. nearly equal to electricity.  There are plenty of wifi options where I live, but aside from the current mask wearing/social distance action, I mostly don't feel like getting up/dressed/going somewhere to view Broadcasts, update JW Library, do service with all my letter writing stuff, go to meetings, etc - all in public places. The weather will be getting bad soon here, as well... yeah - I personally cannot think of a single advantage of not having my own internet source.

But if it works for others, I wish all success!  😊

We have food in our house. We keep the fridge and pantry stocked so we can eat. Does that mean we spend all day eating or thinking about eating ... No.

The same is true for the Internet. Just because you have it does not mean it needs to consume you. You are the master. You do not need to get rid of everything you own just so you are not distracted by it ... self-control does wonders.

We need Internet for our work as well as theocratic activities - when we need to, we just step away the same as we step away from the kitchen. Just because we have food and Internet to use at our convenience - we do not let either rule us.

Try not using it as much and see if that works - unless having Internet is so expensive you need to discontinue it to make ends meet.

Internet in Korea is fast and cheap (my good friend is Korean)

I am not saying that there is problem here ...but "few" brothers had to cut off technology due to struggles with pornography.

One brother even gave up on smartphone, and bought a simple dial in mobile/cell phone.

Wow how are they dealing with the ‘zoom boom’ these days?

It would be a huge detriment to my spiritual routine.
I meet with the group and do all meetings on the internet.
Plus, during my daily video chat with David, we discuss my Bible reading, do family worship, prepare for meetings, and he says a prayer with me before going to bed every night.
I do Zoom get togethers every now and then for good association, and come on here and on social media as well.
I would be so lost with being offline at home.

I have to admit I'm seriously rethinking my decision to stop internet..

Maybe you could try keeping the internet but getting rid of your phone? Use the internet only on less "habit-inducing" devices like a web browser on a laptop, or a simple tablet with a keyboard (but don't install media apps).

I've found browsing on a traditional computer to be much less addictive than touchscreen-based apps are. Basically just set yourself up so that you'll be successful at doing more reading and less 'swiping.'

I've been thinking for more than a couple years that I'd like to get rid of my smartphones (I have two, with multiple SIM cards for traveling etc)

I mostly want to do this to get rid of the little games which I have on one. I keep no games on my main "take away" phone (the one that comes with me when I leave the house). As well as to reduce my use of low-priority social apps and also reduce media consumption. I generally only put those apps on my stay-at-home phone.

But I've been interested in the idea of having a cellular watch for getting important notifications when I'm away from home, and I guess for calls as well (usually with Bluetooth earbuds).

I figured I'll never be tempted to hang up from a call or brief text on my watch and then "stick around" on it, opening apps just out of habit / checking / refreshing feeds. Which is one of the bigger issues with use of smartphones today. The other big one is push notifications, which you can disable entirely on a per-app basis.

I love my Internet connection and what it gives me. I would forgo other things, personally, before letting go of the convenience of that. One thing in this modern world I wouldn't willingly do without unless I really had to. That and coffee!!!

Agree 100%  The internet is my window, door, road and resource to the world. Dropping it would be like dropping electricity or phone service.

I survive even better without Facebook 😏

Even though I have an account, most of the time it is a load of rubbish to be fair. For me it's just a way of keeping up with family, and acts as a dossier of myself and my interests in case anyone is ever interested in me, lol
