Help, I need a new computer!

Recommended Posts

Today, of all days, my computer refused to come on. Rebooted, nada, nutin'! I had a little nagging in the back of my mind and backed it up a couple weeks ago, thank goodness

So now what do I get. I play a downloaded game occasionally, I store pictures of my garden, invoicing, internet (of course), watch dvd's, you know just average small business- housewife stuff. I want (I think I'm saying this right) 2 terabytes (is that enough for today's demands?) of memory and a fast processor.

Any suggestions on things I haven't mentioned is great. TY in advance.

BTW, I am no techy so please dumb down and explain things so I can get it ok?🤣

I do prefer stationary PC with at least 27'inch monitor, they can be build to order selecting desired parts, and upgraded later easily.

If you do not play "power demanding" games like planet Zoo etc... then you can pick up really good deal.

Do you prefer laptop or PC?

Could you start by telling us what operating system you use?  Windows, Android, Apple Mac or Apple Ipad?  or something else?

Should this new computer be a desktop PC or a laptop or a tablet?

That would start us in the right direction to help...♥️

Also - new or used?

Is there a maximum budget?

Windows, laptop, new. I have 2,000 saved but don't really want to spend it all if possible, but I do believe you get what pay for and cheap won't work for me. I need it to last through A day! 😉

Windows, laptop

Why not use a laptop?

While laptops are a popular choice among many people these days, they are often not the best choice. Laptops tend to cost more than desktops for the same level of performance, and while they can be taken to class they are also much easier to lose or have stolen. A desktop can also be upgraded to improve performance with games and other more demanding tasks. It can be as simple as adding a good video card, though more memory or a faster processor may also be worthwhile. A well-built desktop computer can accommodate such upgrades! https://www.pugetsystems.com/spirit.php

This is in line with my Planet Zoo arguments....LOL :P

What size screen would you like? Small or large on a laptop? They run in the range of 11" - 18" (some decimal points in there)

Check Best Buy and search for Windows Laptop and see if anything looks like what you might like and then ask about that/those particular laptops

Feel free to call me and I will see if I can help - we can always Zoom to talk about it

I really like the flexibility of a laptop and I don't really have a spot for a desktop.

I have a 15" now but would like a bit bigger, you know as my eyes get older🙂

I don't want to go into a store without knowing what I'm asking for. I really need to get the right info first. This is only my 3rd I've ever bought and because of not doing my due diligence first I feel I didn't get exactly what I needed before. I just need to know what I need to know then I can go buy one somewhere. Even Costco if anyone has a preference from there

i7 processer is good, SSD hardrive is a must! (solid drives offer better performance) IPS screens are better quality

16GB Ram is a must, Graphic card RTX series are good, but I don't think you can find it within you price range, so you have to settle to whatever is supplied with the laptop, for the price.

SSD explanation: SSDs can give you a significant speed boost in a number of ways. Boot time using a solid-state drive averages about 10-13 seconds as compared to 30-40 seconds for a hard drive. Because SSDs use nonvolatile storage media that stores persistent data on solid-state flash memory, file copy/write speeds are faster as well.

Well I understood significant speed boost, 30-40 is worse than 10-13 boot time, copy/write speeds faster

Is 16mb ram normal, or enough?

Why a graphics card, what does it do, can't remember

The Graphics Card is responsible for rendering an image to your monitor, it does this by converting data into a signal your monitor can understand. The better your graphics card the better, and smoother an image can be produced.

In your case you do not need the "good' one unless you do video rendering, play demanding games etc etc..so the average one that will be supplied with your laptop will be ok ..but in the store perhaps ask salesman for this aspect if there is no big difference in price ..let's say $80 more and you get better graphic card then I recommend to go with better performing one.

16GB Ram is the minimum, that you should go for, (I have 32) RAM stands for Random Access Memory. The data stored in RAM can be accessed almost instantly regardless of where in memory it is stored, so it's very fast — milliseconds fast. RAM has a very fast path to the computer's CPU, or central processing unit, the brain of the computer that does most of the work.

I just want to make sure if you absolutely need a new computer to help you save your money. I have seen many people buy a new machine when they could just fix the old one but they don't because they don't know how to. Where does the problem lies in the computer not turning on? Is it the hard drive or the power supply? There are a hundred ways a computer can fail and some requires a very naive fix and some would really require you to buy a new pc.

Hinta

Its been struggling to boot up, delaying more and more. Then today it just went to the automatic screen saver and wouldn't show my log in screen. So I did emergency shutdown, twice, second time it was a black screen and I heard no computer noises, nothing. Silence. I do have a tech I use and will take it to him to confirm on Monday.

NWE

Your info on the graphics card is great, I understood. I believe my current computer has 32GB ram, I'll probably stay with that.

Ok, we're building something I can understand. What's next?

Perhaps you could select a laptop online and send us a link here, and we can tell you what we think about it?

32GB RAM  is a good decision ...you're future-proofing your machine.

Cheryl,

Now that I have some idea of what you are looking for, I will check some options and maybe we can talk about them on Zoom - how soon are you wanting to buy one?

Soon, I just want to be real familiar with what I'm buying.

I did, finally, get it to boot up, just in time for memorial, but its unreliable for me now. After memorial I have to invoice because there's no guarantees it'll stay good.

Where are those? Great prices. Explain why the 2nd has only 1T but is more expensive (see, this is what I mean, my brain gets lost in the minutiae)

Oh wait, on Amazon?
