Do you teach ESL?

Recommended Posts

I was just thinking that some of you brothers and sisters might like to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) on the internet, especially if you live in a foreign country or you are thinking about moving to one.

I work for a company that hires about 100 new teachers a month and are planning to start round the clock classes, so they are especially looking for teachers that live in other time zones like Europe, Asia and Australia. They want good teachers that speak Spanish or Portuguese, (but not much, you can learn the basics because we aren't supposed to use it during class unless we have to). You need to have a good idea of English grammar, be a native speaker (they say British or American accent), and you will need to catch the students mistakes and help them correct them. And of course, have a good internet connection and a quiet place to work. As of now, we only use microphones, no video.

If you want to know more I can answer questions. I hope this helps someone else serve where the need is great or at least help to make ends meet!

Thats a good question Angela :) its ideal for me. The only problem is that Im only 17 and am only fluent in my native language (English). Im proficient in German and would love to teach others but its what is required...

Good question! No, you don't need teaching credentials but you should know how to be a teacher and you have to know grammar. For example if a student writes a sentence that says: "He is sit the couch" you should be able to spot the mistakes, the student forgot to add "ing" (if he wanted to use the present continuous) and he forgot the word "on" which is a preposition.

I would be interested in looking into something like that. My current situation is I'm not working. I am studying to do my series 7 license and looking to increase income from current unemployment and disability for my husband to help pay the bills and have a few dollars. I got all A's in school with english and I think I could be a decent teacher of it.

What would need to be done to move forward

I certainly won't be a teacher, but is it expensive to be a student? Would you please tell us a little about it?

I think I need more practice:blushing:

I am guessing that it is expensive to be a student but I don't have any idea of the pricing. But you do save money in the sense that you don't have to travel to the school or buy books, but you do have to have a way to connect to the internet.

Is there a minimum age for this kind of work? I'd love to do something like this after I finish my A levels. And how many hours work is usual for a normal week?

I don't think there is a minimum age but I would guess they prefer someone to be 18. The schedule is somewhat flexible, you can decide if you want to 15-40 hours a week. I don't know who could do 40, it's kind of tiring. Most teachers do not teach forty hours a week, right? I started at 15 and am now at 20-25. But you decide and you also fill out a schedule that shows when you are available(they are looking for mostly night teachers, Eastern Standard Time). If you get a shift you can't work, you can try to get someone else to cover it, they have a way to do that.

So if you want to know more, PM me and I will send you the link to the site and you can get a feel for what the job is like and also see the application. Even if you can't do it now, it might be something to keep in mind for the future. Also, there are many other companies out there that offer online ESL, so you can do your own research if it sounds like something you might like to do. Language teaching is usually a good job for brothers and sisters who want to serve in other countries.

I had actually looked into teaching abroad but found the instructional courses far too expensive to be able to complete so I could be hired on. I do lack the American and British accents though :P I'm Canadian and apparently we have a slightly different accent than either of those. Also not in the area you said they're looking.

There is no fee to pay to complete the certification with this company.

As for the accents, I am surprised they just specify those two, because there are really many accents within the US and Britain, such as the Southern and Irish accent. And don't people who live in the northern US speak somewhat similar to Canadians? I don't think they are that picky, but I can ask them if you want.

As for where you live, they are hoping to expand the hours and that's why they need teachers who can work the "graveyard shift" but that it wouldn't be the middle of the night for them. But they are going to keep hiring teachers every month from "here", too. So let me know if you're interested in knowing more.
