Dear Peter, we have been cautioned about lotteries many times. Lotteries are encouraging greed so are not something a Christian should get involved in. Also, a lot of these "lotteries" are really nothing more than scams to relieve unsuspecting people of their money. NEVER give them any private information such as bank accounts, and never send them money in any form. So my personal advice is get out of it and have nothing more to do with it. Notice, I said personal advice. Many may not agree with me.

For everyone concerned this "lottery" is not the typical lottery that you are thinking of where you buy a ticket trying to win millions of dollars. It is simply a method the government uses to try to be unbiased in processing citizenship applications or Visa (not the credit card) applications.. Only so many are taken per year and this is how they distribute some of them.

I moved this post to Chit chat the first time it was posted. It is not a news article.

I failed to leave a marker behind, apologies to Peter for making it hard to find his post, but now there are two in this forum. :)

To go along with Jacks post, the government uses this same "lottery" system to issue licenses, like alcohol, etc as well as contracts and many other things where the chances need to be equal for everybody. It is NOT "gambling" in the way some people think it is.

For everyones information....here in Montana....they use the same type of lottery to choose who will get the limited number of hunting quotas....on a particular species....like a moose....only so many can be hunted....and those chosen to hunt this animal....are picked by this same type of lottery.....of course, the hunter has to register to be in that particular group.

So yes, this type of ....lottery....for hunting purposes....is the same type that the brother is inquiring about....but in his case....the purpose of the lottery....is to pick randomly....people who will be allowed to enter the country and get a green card....which allows them to be there legally.

Dear brother Peter,

It sounds to me like the reference to October of 2012 has to do with CHECKING THE STATUS of your entry only. (I did a search on google and found this that your friends may be talking about:)

https://www.dvlottery.state.gov/ - "DV-2012 entrants (those who entered the DV lottery between October 5, 2010 and November 3, 2010) have until September 30, 2012 to check the status of their entry through this website."

(I found the above link link through this web site: http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/types/types_1318.html)

I hope this is helpful to you.

Christian love to you dear brother.

The Bee

Hello tucker,

Thanks for ur reply. Maybe I need to introduce mysef in terms of my profession. I'm a cerrified Fiber Optic Technician and also a member of both the Nigeria Network Operator Group and African Network Operator Group which means I'm an IT professional so my brothers I know how to identify a scam so very much from the original and secured website.

Note and plss don't get me wrong I know what is a lottery and it is against my conscience but then the US Visa lottery is not in a full sense a lottery or a scam cos the opening is just for few fortunate pple and following the instruction from the US Government site, https://www.dvlottery.state.gov/, will tell us that it is free and no money is been charge for the online registration as long as one meet up with the requirements. And if u want to know a genuie and non-scam site always look at the URL if it is https:// and if not dat means the site is fake and scam.

I have asked about this year before now and even reseach to the point of meeting with some overseers both at the local congregation and from bethel home and nothing negative was about this particular type of it.

I know many JW who are now in US through this medium even my own sister-inlaw is there in US with her husband who is an overseer too.

So please before u conclude, since I know that not everyone in US and the rest of the world knows much about it I will rather suggest u read the link, https://www.dvlottery.state.gov/, and know where the source is coming from if it is scam or genuie.

Pls I respect ur view and also ur conscience and I never want to stumble anybody. Thanks for sharing ur view it is noted.

Thanks for the information but I want to let u know that this link u showed on ur message"http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/types/types_1318.html)" is not the genuie site it is a scam one and plss no one should go in there and do anything or follow their instruction. However, the original and secure or official website from the US Government is "https://www.dvlottery.state.gov/".

I have checked for my result but just waiting for the next batch in October 2012 by Jehovah's will.

Hi Peter!

I just posted a link that explains how things work in the visa lottery. If you check out the other thread you started about this, you will see how myself and other members have said that this is not a lottery in the "gambling" sense of the word. Here in the U.S. the government uses lotteries to issue licenses and permits such as a liquor license. They do this to keep it fair.

I moved both topics to the correct forum and I should have left a marker after the first one (this one). I apologize for overlooking that.

You can also help by reading the instructions about what topics belong in a forum such as the "news" and "Interchange". This will lighten the load on the Moderators.

Thanks for posting!

State.gov is also a US government website, not a scam. Evidently though they don't have the info about the lottery on their site.

Hello Rick,

Pls visit the link and read carefully that is what the US Govt calls it and it is US VISA Lottery which has been on since year 2000.

But it is not the kind of lottery dat is like a scam which I will not encourage my christian brothers and sisters to go for it including my own family and friends who are not witnesses.

So it is US Visa Diversity.

Thanks

Bro. Peter.

Thank you Peter, I will check out your website. I have already looked at your personal Blog page and have seen the pictures of you and your lovely wife, children and all your friends. You have a family to be proud of! Your countryside looks very beautiful!

I thought we were already friends as well as brothers! :)

Moving posts around to keep the forum consistent is just part of our jobs as moderators, there is no animosity involved. I just failed to leave a forwarding maker on one of your posts, but I did for the other one so it took you to the right place! :)

It is good for us to have another person who knows computers and can help the friends here when they get into difficulties. We have a few like Jan (Hallett 82) Jerry (trottigy) as well as others like Bob and myself. With the different times zones represented on this forum, it is good to have someone around at all times who can help if needed. Keep an eye on this forum (Chit Chat) because friends usually post their computer problems in here.

Good to have you here!

Chuck

Last November when visiting Ethiopia I was kind of sad to see how MANY youngsters were filling applications for these DV 2013 lotteries. I mean, that's what they mostly seemed to do at the internet cafés, that and listening to music. In a way I can understand wanting to get away from poverty and lack of moolah and perhaps then when emigrating, being able to provide for the family back at home. Yet, for Christian youth, and why not for older ones, too, this poses a certain danger–a danger to their spirituality.

Even though I've had the privilege of having been born/raised up in a rich Western country, albeit to a poor family by LOCAL standards, in a way I've realized the benefit of living in an environment, where spiritual things are appreciated. I perhaps couldn't live my life as a missionary in a foreign country far away all year long, but any brothers and sisters reading this, and coming from such circumstances, please consider moving far far away in a prayerful manner.

The spiritual apathy permeating the Western world could very easily lull you to deep spiritual sleep.

You mean the Witness youngsters or just the worldly ones?

You mean the Witness youngsters or just the worldly ones?

I saw non-Witness youngsters being most eager to participate in the visa lottery as far as I could see. In a way, this I can understand because most in the world have no hope of anything better.

In general I don't have any problems with someone moving elsewhere to study at universities, I mean, I would be a hypocrite having a problem with that. I made (the mistake) of moving to another country to study because in my case there were NO OTHER viable alternatives. As has been said in the talks given at conventions and assemblies, however, immersing oneself in the world of higher education does pose a serious danger to one's spirituality. But going off-topic already, I assume...
