Some chit chat about math...a question....

I have a couple questions....I was helping my 7th grader study for a final tomorrow.

When graphing equations like this one y = - IxI + 2 ....the straight brackets indicate the equation is for absolute value as opposed to a nonlinear equation....correct? That is what I am assuming.

And what are the brackets called? I have searched his math books...can't find either answer anywhere. Sometimes the questions are concerning terms and symbols .

If anyone can help me out I'd appreciate it....thanks.

Hey thanks that is a helpful answer for a few reasons. And I just found the bars ,they are called absolute value bars,so there ya go.

That's great thanks.Sometimes we use khanacademy.org but he doesn't explain everything .I just set my son up with a one on one math tutor for 8th grade.

Thanks alot for the website....my son got an 82% on his math final (he ended with A's in L/A and Soc Studies,B in Science and Math) ....every question he got wrong was in Geometry....so the teacher is going over each question this afternoon.

I'll have him do math worksheets from the site you mentioned .

Yes, I love that guy Sal Khan ,I've been going to his site for over a year....but after watching a couple of his videos yesterday I will make that a daily part of Sams summer.
