Ten Commandments to be displayed in all public schools in Louisiana

The legislation that Republican Gov. Jeff Landry signed into law on Wednesday requires a poster-sized display of the Ten Commandments in “large, easily readable font” in all public classrooms, from kindergarten to state-funded universities.

“If you want to respect the rule of law, you’ve got to start from the original lawgiver, which was Moses” who got the

I know not all religions put the 10 commandments down as the same, but the legislature added the text they wanted:

1. I AM the LORD thy God.
Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

2. Thou shalt not make to thyself any graven images.

3. Thou shalt not take the Name of the Lord thy God in vain.

4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

5. Honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

6. Thou shalt not kill.

7. Thou shalt not commit adultery.

8. Thou shalt not steal.

9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house.

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his cattle, nor anything that is thy neighbor's.

LOVE IT!!

Man are our kids going to have fun explaining that LORD (all cps) is "Jehovah" and how using it helps them comply with #3

EDIT: the law does NOT have the #s before each law. I added them to make it easier to discuss. In fact, that might even be an interesting conversation starter - how would you number them?

I wonder how many kids would notice that the commandments related to Jehovah are first.

Well.......the destruction of Babylon has to begin somewhere.  With the Pope being accused before the UN and now this.  Lets see how this fall turns out.

There always is various agendas. One could meditate all day and do all kinds of research and interviews to determine the various motives, but in the end - what do those motives matter?

The 10 commandments will be posted and they will make a great opportunity to preach - really OUR motive is the only one that is going to matter, eh.

EDIT: I fully expect this to be challenged all the way to the Supreme Court, but I wonder if this particular Court would overturn it. ANYWAY, this still gives us some interesting talking points.

I saw a headline that quoted the governor saying "I can't wait to be sued".   Oh yeah, he knows that's coming fast.

My first thought when I heard about this 10C law was, everyone else will now demand that their "laws" also be posted in every classroom, Muslim, Atheist, Satanism etc.

Personally I don’t think we should bring it up as a conversation point in the ministry; and if asked, I’d not give an opinion.

I would love for someone to ask about it, it is a great way to steer the conversation into a discussion of what the Bible says.

I see what you’re saying but I can imagine someone also just wanting to know “is it good or bad for the state to do this,” which isn’t something we should have an opinion on imo

That would also make for an interesting conversation...

Did you know that one day the governments of the world will take a different approach to religion? Can I show you a fascinating prophecy in Revelation?  :bouncing:

Spoiler

Chapter 18 would be interesting or maybe a discussion on neutrality and Jesus prayer at John 17 or maybe Romans 13 ... let the spirit move you....

Which version of the ten commandments are to be posted? Catholic, Jewish or Protestant?

For good measure should the Muslim version be included?  :D

They solved that in the legistlation by stating exactly which ones and how to word them:

I AM the LORD thy God.
Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Thou shalt not make to thyself any graven images.

Thou shalt not take the Name of the Lord thy God in vain.

Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

  • "Thou shalt not make to thyself any graven images."

I wonder if those that readily support the public posting of the ten commandments have truly considered this little tiny bullet point.   Could just leave it as a rhetorical question...

graven image:  "a carved idol or representation of a god used as an object of worship."

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm honestly not bothered by this at all. I'm from Louisiana. Yes, they're very Catholic there, and the Catholics have made their own religion somewhat analogous to Christianity, but if I'm being brutally honest, I'd rather see any version of the 10 commandments at a school I was sending my daughter to than a thousand pride flags being shoved in my face at every corner.

When I was in elementary school, the 10 Commandments were displayed in the schools. They also used to have a "Daily Devotional" where a scripture was read - and a prayer in the classroom or over the PA system.

By the time I was in High School, the scripture reading, and prayers had come to an end, but the 10 Commandments were still posted in some of the classrooms.

A few years later, the 10 commandments were removed from the schools. Now they will be back ... makes me think of what Solomon said:

What has been is what will be,

And what has been done will be done again;

There is nothing new under the sun

Ecclesiastes 1:9

I agree. It's sad because the rainbow is supposed to be a symbol of the flood and how Jehovah wasn't going to do that again :(

I mean….makes the whole flag salute issue easier. Well it says right on the wall Mrs. smith….

Jer 29:11-“For I well know the thoughts I am thinking toward you, declares Jehovah, thoughts of peace, and not calamity, to give you a future and a hope.”

Psalm 56:3-“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”
Romans 8:38-”For I am convinced...”
