Mens Suspenders?

Recommended Posts

I am considering switching to suspenders instead of wearing a belt. I found this video interesting as I was not aware of the variety of suspenders.

I know there are no "dress codes" pertaining to belts and suspenders ... but, I know a few elders that think a brother is not properly dressed if he is not wearing a belt and therefore will not use such a brother.

Maybe this could be shown during a local needs part....

In the late 1970s John Malloy published a book Dress for Success. The book appears to have been well researched by having individuals do things dressed a certain way, and then change one item of the outfit and try again.

He made several recommendations for young professionals on how to dress themselves to their best advantage to succeed in thir profession.

Most of his suggestions were quite effective.

One comment he made was "No man of substance ever wore pants without a belt."

HOWEVER, it must be noted that his book is at least 45 years old.

As has been discussed "ad infinitum" in other threads, the GB has made it clear that we are not always held to older styles of dress.

My thought is that an Elder who will not use a brother without a belt is probably from the previous century (as am I), and still has the mindset of the 1980s.

Even then, many men would wear trousers without a belt playing golf. They were wearing trousers made to be worn without a belt. There are still trousers made to be worn without a belt under the trade name Sansabelt  (sans means without).

As long as the trousers are made to be worn without a belt, I would have no objection. HOWEVER, if the trousers have belt loops, then to wear them without a belt would raise doubt about the individual's understanding of basic dress standards. At least that is my personal opinion. Comments may be found on websites discussing men's wear that wearing trousers with belt loops with no belt is "modern style."

There are also websites on men's dress that "trousers" are not "pants" because "pants" have beltloops. If there are not beltloops they are "trousers." Historically, that has not been my opinion  -  but that is just my opinion.

Thanks,

Jim

Yes some do like to make rules where there are none

I guess I wouldn't be used. I regularly wear suspenders with my suits. I have various colors to either match or provide contrast. AskOkey- the tailor in the OP video explains in other videos his thoughts on dressing. His service sells suits starting from $3800.

Fortunately, our guidance in D&G comes from a higher source at no cost.

I really like suspenders and in the past, when I was young, I wore them. But I didn't go on stage in a shirt and suspenders. I put a jacket on top. It wasn't accepted at our place. I'll also say, this is my opinion, that going out in trousers without a belt, if that's what they're designed for, doesn't look very good, especially if the waistband of the trousers cuts into your stomach. A belt smooths out such problems visually.

I used to wear suspenders all the time.  I seem to remember seeing some that were meant to be worn with a belt, actually attached to the belt.  I like to wear both.  When my weight went up, belts were not enough.  Think about overweight plumbers who wore belts.  I think they (very much) needed suspenders.

Considering the weight on that tool belt, thank goodness for the suspenders!!!
