wanna know everyones take on a certain style modest or not

Recommended Posts

i've heard different people say theres nothing wrong with this style because it doesnt show any legs and is modest whereas ive heard other people say a miniskirt is a miniskirt and the society says no. I'm talking about a short skirt but with non see through leggings or tights underneath. I've also heard "you must be comfortable with whatever you are wearing to be able to informally witness." would a worldy person say "cant believe that Jehovahs witness is wearing that talking to me about god" or is it entirely unoffensive. I can see how it is modest in not showing anything but does it give the wrong impression for casual wear or is it acceptable? what does everyone think? I'm really confused about it but would never want to offend a brother or sister or have a worldly person think less of me.:help: here are some examples:

Some of the young sisters in our KH were wearing these to meeting and we had a local needs talk about grooming and dress. Personally I don't like them and would not be comfortable dressed that way. But of course, I'm no "Spring Chicken" and they would not be attractive on me at all. Grumpy likes the look. We were just discussing this subject yesterday.

For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone.

Problem with dress is that every one is going to give you a different opinion so it's going to be difficult for you to get a right or wrong answer.

My opinion, it's too short. I would not wear it, although at my age I wouldn't look good in it anyway, lol. I do have a 16 yr old daughter who is baptized, and if she bought one of those outfits at the mall, I would have her return it.

Others though might consider these outfits appropriate. Do I find them offensive? No, but I do feel they are too short.

A Well known C'O in my region.( He was a boxer in his early days ) When anyone had a part on for an assembly. He & his mrs. would take out a tape measure. If anyone had a too short a skirt he would send them home. No matter how far they travelled or they couldn"t do their parts. I was only 14 at the time.

I was hmm.!

I like the look personally. but with a longer skirt or dress.

OK, I have 4 daughters - three still living at home. They looked at this and here is the general consensus:

(The way the images appear on my computer screen is this - the top image has the girl with the boots in two poses, under that there are 4 poses, on the bottom there are two poses)

The top images look as if "her slip is showing" and looks too casual for meetings.

The middle 4 were not objectionable - as long as they do not cause difficulty when sitting or walking up steps.

The bottom two - the left one looked like pants in the picture, the right image is just plain TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO short.

My advise would be - if you have to ask others, you are probably not going to be comfortable in them, so think about that before you buy them.

When I first came in the truth I was counseled on my dress a couple times, once a brother handed me a pin and said "Pin it up sis." Another time I thought the dress was OK, it was a long red dress with a lacy corsette top that tied just above my breast, nothing showing but it was form fitting, the elders had a pioneer sister tell me it was too sexy. The sister told me to ask myself if I could see a sister in the WT wearing what I had on?Nope.

So that's what I learned to do,ask myself if this outfit would be worn by a sister in our literature.

I think it looks adorable on a thin young girl. But then someone with a 'Walmart double wide bum' might want to try that same look. UH, Nope! And at meetings - NO!

There are pictures in our literature that shows what is modest and acceptable in our local areas.

I do know that an American sister who was in the Haitian congregation here (a pioneer) was told that she was immodestly dressed for service in hot Florida. She had a skirt past the knee with a short sleeved shirt. In their culture bare arms are immodest.

Now if I were to wear this outfit in the picture my legs would look like oatmeal in pantyhose! :wheelchair:

Yeah that's what I was trying to say, in my longwinded manner...lol....what Chris said...The literature sets our modest standards for dress.

If the question is about wearing these to meetings, I would say no to all of the above.

If the question is wearing it casually, then none of them offend me at all, although the bottom one is definitely borderline, imo.

Different strokes for different folks though.

Hi there.

Here are a few things that I would suggest prayerfully considering. Could you feel comfortable talking about Modesty to a young sister while wearing what you have chosen? And could it make others uncomfortable? Have you seen others on the stage wearing anything like this? We of course would never want to stumble our brothers and sisters.

You sound like a conscientious young sister, and it is lovely that you want some advice about this. It shows humility. Such a quality is so much more attractive than any trending style.

Leggings are really just thick stockings, they're not pants. So these are mini-dresses.

Definitely not for meetings or field service.

Definitely for a young thin person - isn't everything.

Some are shorter than others, so it is really an outfit by outfit basis. A longer skin-tight outfit wouldn't be appropriate either. The boots are good. I hate those "stripper" stilettos some wear, but then again maybe because I can't walk in them and they make me 7 foot tall.

If you feel uncomfortable, or you feel you will make others uncomfortable, don't wear it.

I never meant for these outfits as far as wearing at the kingdom Hal or in the ministry I definitely think they would not be acceptable there. And when I say leggings I mean the non see through tight ankle pants (not the real leggings) with a mini skirt over it but strictly as casual wear only. What then since they are actually pants and not see through but does the short skirt over it give it an immodest appeal

Personally, I think if you wear these clothes, you should ask yourself if people will recognize you as a witness and wonder about you. It is kinda like low cut blouses. We wear bathing suits and they are usually low cut, but would you wear a blouse that is low cut shopping or to a play, etc.?

We are supposed to be Jehovah's Witnesses all the time. If we are questioning our appearance then perhaps it is our Christian conscience that is poking us.

I remember one time, when a similar look was popular and I was in my 20's. I liked the look and so I bought an outfit. I loved it. Once when I wore it, I had to deliver something to the CO's apt. He was a friend so I figured it would be OK. But when I was in front of him, I was so uncomfortable because I "felt" that I was dressed immodestly so I never wore it again. Just saying.

I did not grow up in the Truth but my Mom was an excellent seamstress and made all my clothes. She sewed short dresses for me to wear with saddle oxfords and knee boots. She taught me how to sit and keep my knees crossed. When I turned 15 though she no longer allowed me to wear clothes like that. I wanted a tube top like all my friends but she said that tube tops were for lowbred girls going nowhere fast I would try to wear a tube top that i borrowed from a friend and she wasn't having anything to do with that. She had slut detector eyes and knew if I even had anything in my room that it would be in the trash as soon as I left the house. I remember going to a movie with a boy (I was a senior in high school). I was suppose to be at a football game since I was a cheerleader but I went to my friends house and switched into a pair of her jeans and a top then felt I was grown up since I was going to a movie with a "man" that had already graduated and was coming to pick me up in HIS car. We went out to eat then went to see the movie MASH. There was a part I found uproariously funny and was laughing so hard I was crying. Then I felt a tap on my shoulder and turned around and it was my Mom and Dad setting right behind us. She said "I will see you home immediately after the movie". I was suppose to be spending the night with my friend but that did not happen. I could not enjoy the movie with my parents behind me (it was not the movie I would have watched with my parents). When I got home I was grounded and she said she did not ask me to come home immediately because she did not want to embrass the young man I was with. That was the first and last time I went some place I should not have been.

If that is your style and you like it then fair enough. The bottom skirt does look too short though. It just reminds me of what the worldly teenagers wear without leggings sometimes over here. I think it gives off the wrong image. The middle ones look the most respectable in my opinion. Just remember you don't want to turn people off of the truth and so it is important you always consider what effect your style of dress will have even if it is casual wear. Would there be people who mention your dress sense at the hall or any worldly people that would think anything negative. Each dress outfit should be considered as modest. It is obvious that some outfits stir the conscience and so this is when we should think twice. We need to remember we are walking in the name of Jehovah.

Micah 4:5 For all the peoples, for their part, will walk each one in the name of its god; but we, for our part, shall walk in the name of Jehovah our God to time indefinite, even forever.

Does our style of dress show this?

Micah 4:5 ......"we, for our part, shall walk in the name of Jehovah our God to time indefinite, even forever."

John 15:13 "No one has love greater than this, that someone should surrender his life in behalf of his friends."

Casualy its ok the middle left is cute maybe better with a Jacket our something to cover the arms... I think like what others have said here it can depend on hight, size shape age etc... I too hav got myself all confused with this because u dont wanna dress above your age group nore do want to offend anyone and at the same time avoiding being fashioned by this system, although its kinda hard to avoid it completely. Us girls have it tough i think.

And it's true that we'll get diff opinions. It was said on the platform that if you sit down and the skirt comes above the knee then it's a no.

When i first came along i went from wearing baggy man size t shirts an jeans and black gothic gear to dressing like a woman ten times my age! The only dresses i had were not appropriate at all so really i had no clue as to what i thought looked ok to what actually did look ok... I have a good friend in our Cong who is just great at knowing what colours lengths and styles suit each body type.

Actually it's not just us girls who have this issue although a little more subtle brothers have to be careful too!
